BigTel
If we didn't know enough about Trump's character by now then this one just abouts "Trumps it" pardon the pun https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/oct/04/trump-walter-reed-drive-by-visit-criticism James Phillips, doctor of emergency medicine at George Washington University, who is an attending physician at Walter Reed, called the stunt “insanity”. “Every single person in the vehicle during that completely unnecessary Presidential ‘drive-by’ just now has to be quarantined for 14 days. They might get sick. They may die,” he wrote in a tweet. “For political theater. Commanded by Trump to put their lives at risk for theater. This is insanity.” In a second tweet, Phillips added: “That Presidential SUV is not only bulletproof, but hermetically sealed against chemical attack. The risk of COVID19 transmission inside is as high as it gets outside of medical procedures. The irresponsibility is astounding. My thoughts are with the Secret Service forced to play.” Jonathan Reiner, professor of medicine and surgery at George Washington University school of medicine and health services, said in a tweet: “By taking a joy ride outside Walter Reed the president is placing his Secret Service detail at grave risk.” “In the hospital when we go into close contact with a Covid patient we dress in full PPE: Gown, gloves, N95, eye protection, hat. This is the height of irresponsibility.”

Is your life worth the inconvenience of 12 months of lockdown? According the Worldometer Vietnam has 35 deaths (Population 97 million), Cuba has 123 deaths (Population 12 million), and where the disease first started China 4,634 (Pop. 1.4 billion or death rate of 11 per million). Anyway, this is what Walking Street District 1 in Saigon looks like now. , They locked down for 4 months, few deaths and life back to normal EXCEPT no stupid tourists since we would bring the disease in. I see two points of view: A) Close the borders and isolate; B ) Open the borders with reasonable precautions and accept reality that the world will never be disease free.
BigTel
https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/1997011/reopen-now-or-face-collapse Pailin Chuchottaworn, head of a panel steering the economic recovery, on Monday urged the government to reopen the country in order to prevent it from collapsing. This year's annual GDP is predicted to fall to minus 8-10%, equating to the country losing 1.5-1.7 trillion baht in a single year, Mr Pailin warned. Mr Pailin also lamented the number of requirements for foreign travellers to enter Thailand. For example, they not only needed to show they had tested negative for Covid-19, but the test also needed to be taken 72 hours prior to travel. They must also have a medically trained escort with them, though it is unclear where they will find such people.

Perhaps being in Thailand has blinded you to what is going on in the rest of the world. I can assure you that where I live (Florida, USA), people are getting very sick and dying from COVID, way more than from the seasonal flu.

But i confess i don't see how all these Covid figures can be arrived with the remotest degree of accuracy. Let's do a simple example... someone has terminal cancer with say 2 weeks or so to live. A week before they die they get Covid. That death is then a Covid statistic? i don't believe any of the figures i see, not even Thailand. Except perhaps i do believe the Swedes ,who are the only ones to come out of this mess as far as i'm concerned with any credit. Thankfully for them, unlike here and a lot of countries, the cure is not causing more problems than the disease itself. As i said to Pdoggg the other night after a trip through Pattaya...... it's not dying, it's dead. but anyway.. how are you by the way Sylvester? long time no see, since the Katty some years back i think. Good to see that you are keeping on keeping on.

They are reviewing the mortality rates over the past years compared to the months that COVID-19 has been spreading recently. The rates are higher compared to previous years. This takes longer to compile and analyze - are all those additional deaths due to COVID-19? Probably not, but certainly a lot of them are. This is one area of data analysis that is not being discussed as much as it takes longer and happens months later.

JustSumGai
Perhaps part of the thinking of the military minded government is that Thailand does not need tourism. I've seen official reports that it only accounts for 10% of GNP but lately I see 20% referred to. IF they ease up and let tourism flourish again it will be proof positive that farangs contribute much to the GNP. THAT they would hate I suspect, so they hold firm to their constipated, blinders on approach. So long as the elites and their military henchmen are happy and healthy, there is not much chance of revision of tourism policy. Even student and other grassroots protests will be squashed by the military government methinks.

Of course they are not. We all know that. 13 hours ago, rxpharm said: They are reviewing the mortality rates over the past years compared to the months that COVID-19 has been spreading recently. Yes, as a matter of fact our authorities had to recall 12 CODs yesterday , which were initially filed as death by covid-19 months ago. I have a bad feeling there haven't been many more than 12 autopsies in total during these holiday summer months as all healthcare other than covid-19 care have been basically been standing still since March. The grey area is understandably huge regarding reported death cases, but its a shame they slapped the covid-19 sticker on right away. There will be many many more retractions should they be able to carry out any at all. Looks like the healthcare all over Europe will be busy with more pressing tasks.

Sweden Claims Its High Coronavirus Death Toll Is Down to Mild Flu Seasons in Recent Years https://www.newsweek.com/coronavirus-sweden-norway-death-toll-mild-flu-season-1532201 Anders Tegnell, Sweden's state epidemiologist, told the Dagens Nyheter newspaper, according to a translation by The Local, that a new report showed "a strong connection between a low excess mortality rate from the flu and high excess mortality from COVID-19, and vice versa." He said: "What people are now seeing is that countries which have a rather low death rate from flu over the past two to three years have a very high excess mortality from COVID-19, while those that have had a high flu death rate, like Norway, over the past two winters, have a low COVID death rate."
