BANGKOK — The Junta approved 20 billion baht on Tuesday to improve internet broadband in the kingdom, drawing criticism from internet freedom advocates it will be used to develop its controversial “single gateway” project.

Government spokesman Maj. Gen. Sansern Kaewkamnerd yesterday said that 15 billion baht will be spent to expand the domestic high-speed internet network in rural areas, where the private sector is not interested in investing. That fits the “community internet” initiative recently touted by the Ministry of information and Communication Technology as a means to promote economic capacity and reduce unequal access to the internet.

The other 5 billion baht would be used to develop the single gateway, which the government has promoted as an economic measure to position Thailand as the “digital hub” of the ASEAN community.

The first phase of expanding the internet broadband across the country was expected to start in March, while Sansern said Thailand hoped its gateway project would make Thailand a link between Asia and the West begin in 2017.

Both state-owned TOT and CAT Telecom public companies will be responsible for the project.

The move was immediately criticized by internet rights group Citizen Against Single Gateway as disingenuous, with members suspecting all the money would go toward achieving the junta’s goal of gaining control over the online world.

“What is the exact use of a nationwide community internet, when now almost every house can access 3G and 4G?” wrote Banchong Sanpinta in Thai on Facebook. “Where will the 20 billion baht go?”

Since September, advocates for a free net in Thailand have campaigned against the military government’s longstanding desire to rule the web by routing all internet traffic through a single channel it can monitor and censor. That campaign has led to attacks on government websites to highlight the vulnerabilities of such a system, even drawing the involvement of Anonymous hacktivists.

Some of Citizen Against Single Gateway’s followers on Facebook disagreed that the 20 billion would be used to implement the gateway project.

“I think the budget is too low to be for the single gateway,” wrote Facebook user Sakisaka Saki Nadashiko. “I think it’s just another nice way to waste the money.”

The Bangkok North Municipal Court today sentenced a 22-year-old transvestite to serve two months in prison after finding him guilty of throwing his roommate's four-year-old Chihuahua dog from the window of a rented fifth-floor apartment room in Lardprao area.

At first the court handed down four-month imprisonment sentence after finding Mr Yolada Champasri guilty of throwing his roommate’s pet to the ground.

However the sentence was reduced by half after he confessed.

But the court reasoned that his act of throwing the pet was a brutal torture of the animal as the dog suffered serious injury and died painfully.

No suspension of jail term was given to him.

He was later escorted for detention at the court, pending release on bail.

Yolada was arrested by Lardprao police after Ms Meyanee Sithisuk, 23, posted on Facebook the picture of her injured dog thrown by Yolada.

But Yolada said earlier he was angry when the dog urinated and dropped excreta on his bed.

He said he allowed Meyanee shared the room freely for 10 days but couldn’t tolerate her dog.

He was later told to move out of the apartment after the incident as bringing dog to stay with them violated the regulation of the apartment.

RIP Darel.

Word on the street is that he left his keys and shoes at a Soi 19 massage shop and left in massage slippers. Climbing over balconies in massage slippers is not the wisest idea.

The American owner of "The Dollhouse," a go-go bar in Soi Cowboy, died yesterday after he fell 39 stories from his condominium in Sukhumvit 19.

Darel Davenport, 54, reportedly fell onto the second floor of a house located next to his condo building around 2:30pm yesterday while climbing over from the balcony of the next room to his because he forgot his keys.

Lumpini police said Davenport had locked himself out of his apartment and asked his neighbor if he could climb over from their balcony. His fingerprints were discovered on the wall at the scene as police concluded the case was an accident, Bangkok Post reported.

Police have contacted his Thai wife and will release the body to the family for funeral rites.

According to his employee Kitti Tongjiew, Davenport had lived in Thailand for several decades. His business The Dollhouse, one of the oldest bars in Soi Cowboy, has been flourishing for nearly 17 years.

However, Kitti told Thairath that the go-go bar was recently closed for a few weeks as Davenport was suffering from stress.

In his Facebook posts, which were marked public, Davenport had threatened to fire his employees over the past week and ranted that someone had been hacking his bank and Paypal accounts and the bar's Facebook page. He threatened to file a police complaint against the perpetrators.

BANGKOK — A 23-year-old man Thursday reportedly confessed to having inappropriate contact with hundreds of junior high school boys, some of whom were sexually abused, over the years since he himself graduated from high school.

Chanabodin “Ja” Nikulkan, 23, was charged Thursday morning with the abduction and abuse of children under 15 after parents of six boys went to police. Police said he subsequently admitted to seducing more than 300 children from the same boys school he once attended, and other nearby schools.

At least six boys made specific allegations of sexual abuse. Aged 13 to 15, they told police that Chanabodin treated them to food, alcohol and cigarettes before taking them to his room, showing them pornography, then sexually abusing them. Boys who offered resistance were not allowed to leave, according to police Maj. Gen. Montri Yimyam.

In front of the parents of the six boys, Chanabodin apologized and told them he contacted their children because he wanted to have a son. The children were said to all call him respectfully by his nickname as “Father Ja” or “Teacher Ja.”

The alleged abuser said in most cases he would ask boys to meet him after school finished at around 6pm. They would then go for a walk or dinner, and he would sometimes give them up to 30 baht.

He insisted not all of the 300 boys he had seduced were sexully assualted, saying that some were able to fend him off. He said the abuse consisted of oral sex and touching their genitals.

Police are collecting forensic evidence from his room in the west of Bangkok in Thonburi province and urged parents of other victims to come forward and report any suspicions of abuse at the Buppha Ram police station.

CHACHOENGSAO — It was less than a good morning for Atthaporn Boonmakchuay today. Not after a python slithered out of his squat toilet, bit his penis and refused to let go.

Atthaporn, who just regained consciousness, spoke from his hospital bed Wednesday afternoon to recount the ordeal he experienced in the bathroom of his home east of Bangkok in Chachoengsao province, which he’d entered for his morning routine of a shower and protracted bowel movement.

Atthaporn said he had just squatted over his toilet for his usual 30 minutes of morning business, according to Khon Khao Bang Pakong, when the python rose from the depths to fasten its jaws around the end of his penis.

As his wife Sawittree Shooyoung would tell Thairath, that’s when she heard him scream for help and call for a rope. Entering the bathroom, Sawittree found her bleeding husband fighting with the nearly 4-meter long python. She gave him the rope as requested.

Just before he passed out from loss of blood, Atthaporn grasped the serpent by its head and managed to use the rope to tie it to the bathroom door.

The 38-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital, while rescue workers were left to deal with the rampaging reptile, whose body was still mostly stuck in the squat  toilet.

Workers removed the toilet from the house, at which point they took a hammer to it to free the body of the beast.

Atthaporn is in stable condition. Flanked by grinning doctors, he told reporters that he was careful to unhinge the reptile’s jaws rather than forcing it free and risking permanent damage to his self.

Authorities suspect the python entered the home through a pipe that led it into the toilet. It will be released back to nature, Thairath reported.

Nataree Entertainment raided. 121 sex workers "rescued". Logbooks of police payoffs found.

Quote

FOLLOWING TUESDAY’S raid on the “Nataree Entertainment” massage parlour in Bangkok’s Ratchadaphisek area for suspected human trafficking and prostitution, national police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda has ordered the Metropolitan Police to investigate and impose criminal and disciplinary punishments on policemen found involved with or collecting kickbacks from the premises.

Besides rescuing 121 sex workers, including at least seven girls under 18, and arresting five suspects, the Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA)-led team also found logbooks detailing kickbacks to corrupt police that included Bt60,000 to the Children, Juvenile and Women's Division; Bt76,000 to the Immigration Bureau, Bt30,000 to the Special Branch Division; Bt25,000 to the 191 Special Branch and Bt24,000 to Huai Kwang Police Station.

I reckon the fallout from Nataree raid (in the above post) prompted Pattaya raids.  Always nice to have advance notice of raids. Even if the owners weren't giving a tip off, they'd be smart enough to make sure everything is on the up and up.

Quote

At 10pm on the evening of June 8 a team made up of Pattaya police officers, the Tourist Police, soldiers and over one-hundred volunteers raided five massage parlours in Pattaya City.

The Honey Massage Parlors 1 & 2, the Sabai Rooms, Rasputin and PP Massage venues were all vigorously searched with the owner’s full co-operation. Each was found to have the proper licenses and there was no sign of underage workers in any of them. And there were no illegal substances discovered.

Police Colonel Apichai happily announced that all premises were operating within the law and was pleased to see there is no human trafficking in Pattaya.

The thing is with that Nataree raid, there are about 5 -6 of those really huge, high end soapie places at Huai Kwang near the MRT station. The owners of Nataree must have fallen behind on contributions for them to get raided and no one else.

Two events of interest to Yanks. One is tonight, June 23rd. The other is on July 2nd.

Democrats Abroad Thailand is having their annual meeting tonight on Suk Soi 33, home of the art bars and the former home of Darkside which IMO was the best ladyboy bar ever in Bangkok.

Food and drink can be purchased but there is no requirement to buy anything.  Happy hour prices will be extended for the entire evening.

Democrats Abroad has two main missions. 1) to elect Democrats by disseminating voter registration info and 2) to advance issues that have a unique concern for expats such as Medicare portability and onerous banking regulations.

I voted for Bernie at the polling station in Pattaya. It felt great to vote for Bernie and was also the first time I could hang around the polling station drinking beer just a few feet from the ballot box.  Bernie carried Pattaya, Bernie carried Thailand, and Bernie won worldwide with about 70% of the vote.  HRC won only three countries: Singapore, Nigeria, and the Dominican Republic.

Even if you despise HRC, it's a chance to hang out with some Americans and talk politics.

Come hear all about it, and give us your suggestions for what you want to see DAT do this election year, at the DAT Annual General Meeting! The meeting will take place tonight, Thursday, June 23, starting at 6 p.m. at Tenderloins Sports Bar and Steak House on Sukhumvit Soi 33 in Bangkok. Another soapie raid yesterday. The owner of Nataree is still on the run.

Metropolitan police yesterday raided Alaina Massage Spa in the heart of the busy night entertainment venue on Ratchadapisek road and issued warrant for the arrest of the owner for alleged human trafficking.
The massage spa will be shut down, police said.

The raid followed investigation that the owner and manager of the massage spa, Mr Narin Jaibamrung, 48, has connection with Nataree massage parlour earlier raided and shut down by police for human trafficking.

The owner and manager of Nataree are still on the run.

The raid at Alaina on Ratchadapisek Soi 7 was led by Pol Maj Gen Charuwat Waisaya, deputy commissioner of Metropolitan Police Bureau.

More than 50 police from 191 Patrol and Special Operation Police, Huay Kwang police station, and soldiers joined in the raid.

He said the raid came after police’s investigation found that the entertainment venue has financial linkage with the nearby Nataree massage parlour on Ratchadapisek Road.

Nataree was earlier searched and closed for prostitution and human trafficking charges.

During the search at Alaina, police found some 40 girls but all were above 18 years old.

He said Mr Narin is also owner of PPTS Construction Co Ltd which is the legal entity name of Aliana.

He would be charged for alleged human trafficking.

He said the police could not find Mr Narin as he might be tipped off the raid and fled the premise.

Police would propose to the agencies concerned to shut down the venue definitely and authorities would not renew its license, he said

BANGKOK — What do Thai women want from German boyfriends? Why do some dream of moving to the West? What do farang men find by paying for love and affection after coming to Thailand? Stereotypes about sex tourism and interracial relationships at various levels will be explored through a physical performance on a Bangkok stage.

Based on a German researcher’s look into intercultural relationships and the factors behind them, “Happy Hunting Ground” examines individual dreams and social systems, even legacy colonialism, through interviews with Thai women in relationships with German men and Pattaya sex workers to a Thai wife in Germany.

An intercultural production co-produced by Democrazy Theatre Studio and Germany’s Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, the contemporary dance performance stars four Thai actresses and two male actors and is directed by Thanapol Virunhakul, whose past productions include 2014’s “Hipster the King.”

Thanapol said his curiosity toward couples from different countries and cultural backgrounds has extended to how the social systems work, how authorities control and influence people’s personal lives, and how they respond to that.

“A romantic relationship between two people is not private. It doesn’t involve only two people,” Thanapol said. “But it becomes a public issue since it engages peers, social norms and acceptance.”

“We might think the issue is not really relevant to us, but actually it might be relevant to us more than we know,” the choreographer-director said. “We all try to strive for a better life, which sometimes make us similar to these couples.”

Tickets are 600 baht and 300 baht for students. The show’s dialogue will be in English.

“Happy Hunting Ground” will show at 7:30pm daily Sept. 1 – Sept. 3 at the Sodsai Pantoomkomol Centre for Dramatic Arts at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Arts.

After its run in Bangkok, the Thai-German performance will move on to Chonburi province Sept. 6 and Sept. 7 at Burapha University’s Blackbox Theatre before traveling to Germany and Switzerland.

In the era of mobile phones, telephone booths in Bangkok (boxes to you Brits) are now deemed obsolete and will be removed.

Quote

It will soon be incredibly difficult to find payphones in Bangkok during emergencies as Bangkok Metropolitan Administration plans to wipe out all remaining phone booths in the city by December.

The project to remove non-working phone booths were initiated a few years ago, but Bangkok’s new governor, Pol. Gen. Asawin Kwanmuang, yesterday instructed all district chiefs to remove them all — including the ones that still work — by Dec. 1

Anyway, it’s no secret that most pay phones in the city no longer work, and are now just sweet spots to put up flyers.

There are currently 3,189 phone booths left in Bangkok that need to be removed, Prachachart reported.

HiSo TV host scumbag forces man to prostrate to his shiny new luxury car.

Quote

BANGKOK — Footage spread Sunday of a driver who was caught on video raging and subsequently punching a motorcyclist who lightly shoved his vehicle, after the man allegedly tried to escape, and forcing him to prostrate to his car.

In the one-minute video, the enraged driver, Akaranat Ariya-riwikul, 28, a television host with GMM TV, was seen in the video clip dragging the man from across Charoen Krung Road near Taksin Bridge. The man was dragged to the yellow Mini Countryman, a car which costs THB 1.8 million baht.

The motorcyclist, Kittisak “Not” Singto, 25, a clerk at the Revenue Department, looked scared as the car owner asked why he hit him and fled. Akaranat grabs Kittisak by his jacket. After punching Kittisak three times, a bystander on the street asks why Akaranat was attacking the man instead of calling the police. The motorcyclist apologized after being punched the first time, which didn’t deter Akaranat from continuing the beating.

Toward the end of the video, the driver forced Kittisak to prostrate to his shiny luxurious car.

“Prostrate to my car!” Akaranat said.
