Margaret Thatcher RIP

Recommended Posts

Well said-youre not qualified to express an opinion....just as I would not have the temerity to discuss American politics, coz all I know of American politics ,is what ive read...

If you had lived thru the Thatcher years in the UK,you might have something to base your opinion on.......AND-you really think she ever tried to live by that prayer of St Francis.......?  Please ,thats just too funny.

Just for the record, I'm not American Willie. I have the Queen on my money also. My view on the Thatcher years was not forged nor polluted by the American media.

Honestly pal-you dont know SHIT about me i.e. whom I might like and/or dislike.  Of the above I "like" only 2 out of the 4.

This is from a guy that thinks Fidel Castro is a swell, good guy.....

Isn´t that what i said? You like  those two (2) evil people.

It also gives me a chuckle when some of youse guys mention how she is going to Hell.  Thats pretty funny for a bunch of atheists!!!!  See the irony there????

Yeah, i was just thinking that when i wrote it   I should've made a disclaimer that there isn't any hell. They have to bury her in Jerry Falwells church then, which would be the closest place to hell ( not that there is one).

Yeah, I'm not for the UK either.

Doesn't matter, she was still an evil bitch who caused much misery in England while enriching the already rich. She was also an aly and close friend of Raygun. Fuck her.

I think she also called Nelson Mandela a terrorist. Wrong side of history much?

Watching the vox populi coming from people in the UK being interviewed on television, you could be excused for thinking they were talking about the devil himself herself.

"Well she ruined the country, didn't she?"   &   "She destroyed everything, she was terrible for the UK"   &   "Not sorry she's gone, good riddance is all I say."

These responses were among others broadcast about her today but I already knew what to expect, I have had many conversations with British migrants over the years who expressed similar views. And woe betide anybody who thinks otherwise.

I am not going to try defending her record, she was so divisive & bloody minded that one can't separate the good from the bad. I neither love her nor hate her but I do admire her determination. Some of today's spineless politicians should take note. The fact she completely lacked empathy will always be an issue for those affected by her policies. Hence the rage.

I will add that without 'Thatcherism' where she de-nationalised the country, destroyed the power of the unions, sold off state owned industries so they could be run efficiently, discounted the price of public housing, forced state institutions to be accountable, etc, the place would be far worse off today. (DISCLAIMER: subsequent governments have wrecked much of what she did) And I know lives were destroyed doing it, many argue the price was too high but without her reforms, what was to become of the moribund Socialist society the UK had become?

Margaret represents everything the left hate about Capitalism. With her callous disregard, she's an easy figure to revile. That's their prerogative. They must find it galling that she's about to be given the biggest state funeral in a long time with her "victories" trumpeted about on every media. To the winner goes the spoils I guess, it's just a shame she couldn't show some heart once in a while.

So ipso facto, Willie his would mean that you really cannot comment/take an opinion on American politics/policies??  My, oh my you are selling yourself quite short.......

I cant without showing how little I actually know.....

Certainly, sir.  In this thread there are many vicious comments/sentiments.  Just look at the first couple of pages at how she was an evil bitch and how she is going to hell and how orgasmic that people are over her death.

Now on the Chavez thread, there were maybe two posters who expressed this but,as a whole, those of us who did NOT like Chavez argued the policies instead.  Yeah, there was dislike about his policies and behavior but those who did NOT like him didnt use the bile invective that youse have against Thatcher.

Hence, my opinion that there is hypocrisy.....

you need tore-read it archie...its full of hatred against a man much loved by his people-unlike Thatcher

Just for the record, I'm not American Willie. I have the Queen on my money also. My view on the Thatcher years was not forged nor polluted by the American media.

fair point Sam....still geographically removed from the scene of her crimes tho' Sam.....

BTW Willie how is that party progressing at your house tonight???

It'll last for a week at least Archie...the afterglow you know.....like really good sex.....

Margaret Thatcher wasn't perfect and she made some mistakes, but overall she was great for Britain.

RIP Maggie

spoken by a Londoner...You in the South weren't really affected by her policies....maybe you wouldn't think she was so great if you lived North of Leicester

Isnt it strange how the two darlings of the left , Russia and China , are both now examples of State Capitalism . Poor old Karl Marx must be rolling in his grave. Lets face it , life is unfair and its not changing anytime soon.

Well , you Lefties still got North Korea going for the moment anyway.

What an exaggeration..

Yes it was a wild drunken jubilant exaggeration, a silly one really.

Never mind. It was what came out when I hit keyboard. It gave vent to my vitriol welling up from personal experience.

I worked in higher education. When Howard - a Thatcher acolyte - came to power in 1996 in Australia - he and his glove puppet Costello cut 600 million dollars from government higher education funding in their first budget. The small regional and rural universities - where I did my daily toil - took the brunt of that.

We lost 50 academic colleagues overnight (about 16%). Thanks. Bye bye, seeya later. Redundancy is offered.

Thatcherism hit Oz big time. I was never made redundant or fired. But I stood agog, like Berliners and Hamburgers of the 1930s and watched the mild gentle right wing equivalent of a metaphorical Anschluss happen before our eyes that year and every year for the next 7 or 8. Men and women with decent and worthy academic careers were thrown on the scrapheap courtesy of these right wing ideologues. All in the name of pragmatism and budget savings.

The same vandals proceeded, once they had trashed the universities, schools, public health, public broadcasting, etc., to waste the economic boom we in Oz were going through (none of it due to them) by filling up the pork barrel and handing out to opportunists in marginal electorates with big hip pockets in order to win elections. No care for the future of the country and its children.

So Tomcat, and all you other fans of the Thatcher Right, instead of raving about North Korea and the other Russian and Chinese cliches, try living through what these bastards did to real people in English speaking Western countries - like my academic colleagues. See how that bites.

Thence goes my drunken exaggeration.

The South is where it matters in the UK. North of Leicester (or any other place up north people down south only hear about) is of no relevance to the Capital City where the bulk of the country is kept afloat. We moved from Manchester to 'The South' decades ago and have never regretted it for a second.

Maggie Thatcher improved our lives and for that I am grateful. She has without doubt been the greatest British Prime Minister during my lifetime. Too many people got brainwashed by "The Young Ones",

Sorry to hear your feelings about Maggie Ken but Hang on a minute..You are talking about Australia .. what has that to do with Thatcher. Are you really serious about wanting us to believe she was responsible for what happened there...

You cant blame her for PM Howards modus operandi

I wish i could blame someone for some of the Socialist rules that have been imposed on Business by the EU.

Employing people is a nightmare here there are so many rules to oblige the employee its not worth it

All we do is export the jobs and problems to good old Commie China.. the workers paradise

I was going to rant KenW... then i realised whats the point.....

I wish all governments had the balls to shift to non interventionist economic management, with marginal expansionist monetary policy - Oh to be an idealist.

If you truly believe its the role of the government to fund an unsustainable existance, then I'm sure there plenty of places in Europe you can visit to see how that works out for yourself on some tax payer funded academic junket.

Unfortunately for yourself, the liberals will return to power shortly, and your mates will need to find real job as the excesses of the labour government will once again need to be corrected. (you need to revisit that chicken/egg thingy to gain perspective on those prior job losses)

Only problem I invisage this time is the country is fucked.... I cant see the budget balancing any time soon, nor can i see the debt getting paid back.

The past 6 years have caused so much damage that i believe the momentum towards implosion is unstoppable. A change of government is merely a handbrake.

I aim to be out of here before d-day.

**** Apologies for off topic lads ****

Being reported here that Thai channel 5 news on reporting the death of Maggie Thatcher, used a photo of Meryl Streep from her portrayal of Thatcher in the film the Iron Lady....

Only in Thailand..........................

RIP Maggie. Lord be mercy to her.

PS She opened my dining halls at school when she was minister of education. The food was still rubbish.

Boo Hoo, Stop being mean about the nice little old dead lady!

All she ever did was demonise the working class, instruct the police to kick the shit out of the miners, took us to war, befriended, (other,) war criminals, deregulate the banks and promote the, "greed is good," culture that led to the financial crisis we are enjoying today...........

Hang on, now I think about it, she was a bit of a cunt wasn't she?

So a sad and confused old lady lost in a closed world of dementia died the other day.  I'm certainly not gonna dance on her grave but here's why I think the world would have been a better place without her (and her acolytes / cronies)

- In order to rebuild British Industry she first smashed it.  Then determined not to rebuild it.

- She signalled the death blow for Mining, Steel works, Shipbuilding, Car manufacturing, Railway engineering and other core industries

- She wasted the revenue stream from North Sea Oil

- She seemingly had a pathological hatred of the Trade Unions and the Working Class

- She set workers against workers and communities agains communities

- Talking of communities - she reduced vast swathes of the Midlands, the North and Scotland to an industrial wasteland and the once proud communities within were the subject of an economic scorched earth policy.  They have NEVER recovered.

- She described the Mineworkers as the 'Enemy within'. These were men and families that had fought for their country in WW2, who helped keep the UK running during WW1, who lived and worked in often extreme hardship and incidentally included my Lancashire based Grandfather who had worked at a Colliery and voted Conservative all his life until she described him as the enemy.

- In near illegality she used the Police and Judiciary to break industrial disputes

- Having taken on the Miners, Steelworkers, Shipbuilders she turned to 'softer' Union targets - Nurses, Teachers and Council Workers

- She oversaw the economic and political centrification of the UK to the South East regions

- She moved the UK from a post WW2 welfare leaning Social Democratic state to a neo-Liberal one and helped sow the seeds for future economic disasters

- She began the sorry sale of every State / Nationalised asset that have engendered profits for big business but manifestly failed to deliver significantly improved services for Consumers.

- She made low cost housing available to Council House owners but never replaced the houses that had been sold with a State house building initiative.

-  If you were 'one of us' you were on side.

- She picked on the vulnerable; gays, single mothers and immigrants

- She preferred confrontation and destruction to compromise and consolidation

- Under her watch the flag was seized by the Nationalists

- Against all advice to the contrary she fought for the introduction of the Poll Tax arguably the most unjust and unfair taxation policy in the past 200 years

- She was a zealot for whom it was all about ideology.  Her economic policies saw unemployment hovering around 3 million for the duration of her term of office but this appeared a small price to pay.

- The largest and worst urban rioting in over 100 years were a domestic back drop to her time as PM

- She did little to advance the cause of women - certainly she was no feminist

- Her record on Human rights support was poor

-  She supported some of the very worst Dictatorships and State Terrorists of recent times: both publicly (Pinochet and Chile and the Apartheid Regime) and tacitly (the Khmer Rouge (FFS!) and Suharto in Indonesia)

- And finally she tried to destroy social cohesion and replaced it with the cult of the individual and the notion that winner takes all is good.

I'm glad she's gone but sadly her legacy endures to this day....
