If the pills prove out and GET out, this years "high" season being a bust won't matter much I think. If pills work and get out there would be an instant high season, even in July. It would take that long to even begin to get first line preparations ready. Chief among those is de-mildewing and re-certifying planes and hotels. AND getting STAFF! Word is about 40% have found other jobs. So many would be fresh newbies with little or NO English skills or grasp of customer service. That might not be so bad, the newbs just might be humping to please (pun intended) to keep this new job.

I think for every one person stupid enough to invest a half million dollars in Thailand there will be thousands of "undesirables". If I were stinkin, I'd be looking at Hong Kong, maybe Sing. This new attempt at "quality tourists" won't have much effect on the rest of us methinks. All that needs to happen is for the sex industry to get a bit more low key. In regards to average tourists in general, less drunken rowdy STUPID behavior in the streets would help as well. Then they would think they have won :)

from the few I know up there, the country life is fine and there are MANY MANY expats living pretty much full time there...but they DO contribute mightily to her family for sure. I've wondered if this phenom was becoming so popular that the girls were leaving Issan in much lower numbers causing a bit of a shortage of workers in Bkk, etc. I mean if we all made an end run around the traps like Pattaya, Bkk, et all and headed straight to the source, well it might change things. To me it's like here where everyone wants the rich customer. LOTS of stupid high prices and places with those prices hello? can you say Walmart? I'd rather have 1000 lower income folks spending all they have than 100 rich blokes splashing big on occasion. Just because someone is rich don't mean they spend big and like a fool. My feeling is that if they opened up to ALL again, money would flow. Backpackers spend like well, um, like kids. I personally spent over 20k over the years and that was while staying in 300 baht guesthouse dorms, IN Bkk, off Suk. the main downside of letting EVERYONE in that I can see is it DOES take a toll on the environment, increase in stupid crimes, but then again they probably make good money bustin kids for weed at full moon parties, etc. There's already WAY TOO MANY posh digs and resto's in the resort areas. If I had big money i'd invest in Khon Kaen or maybe Korat. I'd love to see stats on where farang movement has been to over the last 10 or so years.

seems they'll be lessening restraints very soon. CoE likely to be altered to ease up. Talk now in many circles is ENDEMIC, meaning we're just gonna have to keep up the vax'n and live with it. They'll be serving booze at restaurants soon and the gov is easing quarantine some, lots of good info on Thaiger news. But having shot themselves in BOTH feet flip flopping on when they'll open, international tourism is backing off big time. I read that for example billions of baht in repairs and refitting of planes, boats and hotels is needed and THAT they can't do overnight. Likely they'll most of this "high" season if not all. I get the feeling that the government FINALLY gets that any more lockdown/restrictions and the economy will go DOA. Thousands are eating because of expat groups getting out there with food bags regularly. The only way the gov can save ANY face is to quit being such a draconian asshat and ease up on things for REAL. Even if this happens and tourists begin flowing in again it'll be a trickle at first as the whole infrastructure is gutted. Workers home in Issan, etc. I'm eager to see how things are by December, it should be starting to roll by then I think.

maybe late in the year? I think Thailand 2.0 is long gone forever. When it does reopen it'll be a very different version, with LOTS of bars closed, and hotels too. Your favorite eating place might be there but bought out and totally overhauled, with new prices, higher I'm sure. This is the way to shift to "quality tourists' (gov said they wanted that years ago, anyone remember?). For me I think they very much underestimate the amount of money brought in by budget tourists and even backpacker types. Maybe I'm weird but chasing ladyboys is about midway down my list. I'm sure Bkk and to some extent Jomtien will not be places I linger long, even more so now. At this point I've given up hope that it'll open to any realistic extent until maybe high season next year. What will Covid do to the very idea of high season I wonder. I suspect it'll be 5 years before anything resembling "normal" happens. I ain't getting any younger OR richer so who knows.

crazy house? is that what they call it? used to be a great fish n chips place with adjoining bar accessible by a door in the chips place with red glow emanating : ) (back around 2010 I think). Then it was expanded into a restaurant I loved ordering my fish n chips n mushy peas then goin into the bar for a drink to wait, they'd even bring your meal to you in the bar if you requested that. Dave the Rave reported the Old Dutch had been an institution for decades so I guess the fish n chips place was next to the Old Dutch, which was on the corner. All I REALLY remember is this retired finance guy (Channel Islands) who had been travelling everywhere and knew ALL the tricks led us down Soi Cowboy, which was a normal wide street then, made a right at the end, walked a short bit and went right into some hole in the wall spot with no atmosphere and a counter with menu board. Someone had said they missed fish n chips and Paul piped up with a smile saying he knew of JUST the place and it was nearby!

yeah, things have been slipping in recent years as there were certainly enough venues to satisfy us even 10 years ago and now so many more (so now we have 100s of bars with 3 guys sipping a beer?) Other considerations too have made recent trips sadly lacking, war on street foods in Bkk, the march of the condo cancer eastward (have they hit on nut yet?) and so on. I came in a little late (2007) but THOROUGHLY enjoyed myself for many trips after that until I guess around 2014 or so. Many stellar memories and photos. I DO miss the food, tho in truth I had become a bit jaded by my most recent trips...soup noodle, rice this n that...but the fresh food and fruits I do miss. I would LIKE to make some more memories just ahead of my brain ceasing to register thought :) Maybe next high season. I mean it's going to be interesting if they ever do get to rebuilding what the government destroyed by inaction and um maybe ignorance? Might be a whirlwind of specials pricing and come on back offers.
