Luung
"Tell the Repo-Man, And the Stars above............" Quality!!!!!No-one seems to know him. You're joking Katana57, you obviously don't go back to England much?.. I remember being back 6/7 years ago now & you couldn't get away from the bloke, it's one of the reasons I came scrambling back here so quickly! Each to their own mate, but I can't stand the whiney voice, it's like finger nails down a blackboard to me, but I'm well outnumbered & the rest of the UK seems to love him, so who am I? Anyway, from my neck of the woods here's 9 Below Zero who've unfortunately been well forgotton nowdays along with Dr. Feelgood from just the other side of the river, 'The Canvey Island riot squad'!.. I've forgotten the amount of times I've seen Feelgood & Wilko Johnson, even today still performs one of the most adrenaline filled, machine gun spraying performances, completely packed full of attitude, that I've ever seen!.. I track him down whenever I'm back home. They were the most unfashionable band in the country & The British punk rock scene would have never been shaped in the way it was without them, their attitude & their own distinct brand of PUB ROCK! They really were some of the most infuential Grand Daddies of the British Punk scene!R.I.P. Lee Brillo Quote Link to comment
Luung
Maybe your attraction to Black Oak Arkansas was an early clue of your attraction later on to ladyboys. When my GF saw that video she asked me innocently if those were all men. 555 Oh my god, now you've got me asking questions about myself... You might have a point, but I sincerely hope not :hair: Quote Link to comment

The other year I watched the Young Ones again over a period of time in a friend's bar up here in CMX... It just hasn't dated... When the series came out there was a bunch of us who'd skive off work for the day & just get completely wankered on 'Merrydown cider' & dope, watching recorded episodes of it over & over again... I was fun at the time! Nine Below Zero and Dr Feelgood 2 great bands Likewise, there's a few mold musos' here, you're in in good company! 20 Years away will do that to you Maybe another thread...."Musicians you'd most like to kill".BTW,saw Eric live in '77,and this was his best.Skip to the 5:13 mark for the songhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8nmtZ_Bqi4 Read what I've just written about Kiley Minogue Katana... BTW, cool post man! If anyone's interested I'm going to go back through the thread & redo/repost a lot of the tracks that didn't have the pretty Youtube pickkies or play right... Just if anyone is interested? OK, now we're on to slightly obsurish, how about the real Welsh wizard (not Karl, if your reading Hound) John Cale. He was the nucleus of the Velvet Goldmine... Yes him, the Welshman, not Lou Reed... The young Lou Reed actually looked up to him as a mentor, BTW. I'll finish this little selection with 'Spinning Away' a 1990 Eno/Cale number, which preceded the version done by Sugar Ray which was used as the soundtrack on 'The Beach'!.. It really pisses me off that this cunt gets all the praise for his mediocre version while the true masters are quietly being ignored in the background... But that's often the way of it, isn't it, Chai mai? Anyway this dude's been influencing modern music & culture sine the mid to late 60's & so many people just don't know who the fuck he is??? Favourite song on it: Hold Me Down. BTW, Cale, like Garth Hudson of The Band, was classically trained. Quote Link to comment
Hefe
I'm gonna cheat a bit here, this guy isn't unknown, quite the opposite, became pretty successful after a couple of "novelty" type songs. But Jerry Reed was the real deal: terrific musician, songwriter & performer... for some reason out of the blue I started listening to his stuff this week & am thoroughly enjoying it! I think he may not be too known to younger guys. One featuring picking & one for the tune..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja7mwvH5DNc&feature=related Quote Link to comment

BTW, Cale, like Garth Hudson of The Band, was classically trained. I knew John Cale was classically trained, but I didn't Gareth Hudson was?.. But then you just wouldn't believe the amount of classically trained 'rock' stars out there who are pretending/claiming to have clawed their way up the hard way from slums... It's got a bit more cred than saying that you went to the 'London school of Music':D Have you listened to Cale's 2005 album 'Black Acetate' Ken? Right, I bet none of you have heard of this guy, the late, great, Ustad Nusrat Fateh, singing 'Nothing with You'. R.I.P. Nusrat! He was a special gift to Pakistan & mankind in general & I could post a lot more, but I've got a sneaky suspicion that he might just be a bit of an acquired taste? Anyway, I love him!     Haarry, Haarry Haarrie, Haarry Haarry, Haarry Haarrie     Haarry Haarrie, Haarry...... Quote Link to comment
Luung
You've heard this from the film 'Casino', but no one seems to know who did it?.. Well it's this bloke Les McCann , with the version used for the fim being executed by himself & Eddie Harris ... Eddie Harris was the sax player on another worthy version by Ray Charles & Al Jerreau's did a piss poor cover of it too. I'll post the Ray Charles version on the Soul thread, it's completely different! :) Quote Link to comment

Luung
Nice one !!! They don't write them like this anymore - "The devil came and took me from bar to street to bookie " One of my favs too JimSlim & one of our most popular local bands from back home. I've lost count of the times I've seen this lot live? And I was quite a regular boozing buddy of Glen Tilbrook's for a number of years & I know Jools Holland (a later member) quite well too, they're both real quality blokes, even if Glen's a bit of a drunk! I think we're going off topic a bit again, but anyway here's some of my favorite Squeeze tracks! 1 Quote Link to comment
pdogg
As Lung says probably off topic, that Singles Going Steady album has one great tune after another, and as Jim says cool lyrics such as "and I give the dog a bone". But what the hell, I like it. Quote Link to comment

Tomcat
Grand Magus are a Swedish heavy metal band and one of the best around at the mo if you like heavy. I seen them 4 times and they better and better. There songs are of the old North ( vikings and slaying etc). Great stuff if your into that thing. At the last concert the guy standing next to me was wearing a WW2 German helmet with two red Devils horns attached ... ha ha.. people drinking out of Viking horns etc.. you get the drift Quote Link to comment
BackdoorSpecialist
One of my favourites from my youth - The Pietasters, great sounding old school Ska. Still sounds fresh today, Great band. BD Quote Link to comment
globetrotter
Maybe only the Brits will have heard of these....but don't be afraid to shed a tear They had one hit here , "Everybody's got to learn sometime" a pretty great tune back in the day that still holds up today Quote Link to comment
deepthroat
Have you listened to Cale's 2005 album 'Black Acetate' Ken? Right, I bet none of you have heard of this guy, the late, great, Ustad Nusrat Fateh, singing 'Nothing with You'. R.I.P. Nusrat! He was a special gift to Pakistan & mankind in general & I could post a lot more, but I've got a sneaky suspicion that he might just be a bit of an acquired taste? Anyway, I love him! I'm a huge fan of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, first heard of him through Peter Gabriel as I believe most western fans probably did. I've actually got a few of his CD's on RealWorld. One of the great disappointments was that he died before Peter released his "Up" album with the track "Signal To Noise". Originally this was planned to feature Nusrat, and he even performed it live with Peter. But he passed away in 1997 and the album didn't finally emerge until 2002 so Peter had to redo it with a different and far inferior vocal partner. John Cale was another favorite, I used to LOVE his "Honi Soit" album. Not very well known but it's definitely my favorite of his stuff. I actually got to see Cale a few years after that in a TINY club on 1st Ave in downtown Seattle, probably held about 100 people. I swear he was loaded but couldn't really be sure. This must have been around 1982. Someone mentioned The Korgis - I loved the song "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime" and got both of their albums, but it was really the only track on either album with that sound, sort of an anomaly. It was like they were suddenly possessed by the spirt of 10cc or something. And speaking of 10cc, they're another great band that isn't thought of much today. "I'm Not In Love" still gets played on Classic Rock stations, but they were so much more than that one track. Their "How Dare You" LP was probably my favorite, with songs like "I'm Mandy (Fly Me)" and "Don't Hang Up". Here's PG with Nusrat in 1996 or thereabouts, doing "Signal To Noise" live: Quote Link to comment
