ciobha
Sindy just told me that from tomorrow night there will be a total curfew for 1 week, no going out at all. So pretty much mixed messages going out.
Quietguy
I hope that the Thai Government will also take steps to suspend rent payments for the period of the State of Emergency. Otherwise how can people (including bars) who are not earning pay their rent? We'll just have to wait until tomorrow and see what their directives are. Are landlords expected to live on nothing for the duration? Some services could be temporarily nationalised as the ladder of commerce has many rungs, but why kick out only one rung part way up? .. That doesn't make any sense at all. No disrespect intended, but thank goodness you're not on any committee which has any impact on my life. I read that the UK government is outlawing rent increases for the foreseeable future. That sounds far more intelligent. Shutting down all bars, massage venues, places where people would gather in one fell swoop was done for all the right reasons, but the unintended consequences are that 1000's in Pattaya lost their incomes in a heartbeat. Thais are not known for their saving attributes or ability to look beyond just a few days into the future, so many will try to head home to their provinces until things improve. Non-emergency travel is also now/will be banned. What that will leave behind in Pattaya and other cities is many Thais with no money to pay for food, or rent, or anything else. Who knows how that will all work out until it happens. Could lead to all manner of civil unrest. A city which predominantly relies on tourism and sex tourism couldn't be in a worse position.

DC I'm glad I'm not on any committee which has any impact on your life too! I only made that suggestion because, as you say, thousands in Pattaya, Bangkok and other areas which rely on tourism are going to be left without any, or little, income. The UK Government has imposed a 3 month (possibly to be extended) moratorium on any new repossession/eviction court cases. There was concern that this might not make any difference to the approximately 20,000 repossession/eviction cases already in progress, but this morning it has been announced that the Lord Chancellor has told courts to avoid issuing any eviction notices in current cases too. I know in Thailand landlords don't go through the formalities of a court procedure to evict people. I know a lb who came home to find a handwritten note on her door telling her that she and her room mate had to leave by the end of the week - 3 days notice. I would hope that landlords understand their tenants financial difficulties at present and would come to some arrangement about rents. A lot of people are apparently already returning to their home towns and villages, so landlords will probably find it difficult to find new tenants if they evict their present tenants. I was only suggesting that the Thai Government need to give some guidance, I shouldn't have said 'directive' - but I think that was the word used in the news report. I would think they will give some advice on this. The announcement that the Government will make 5,000 bt a month available to some workers should help if it actually works in practice. I hope this is all resolved without too many problems for renters, or landlords.

annat555
Must be some desperate people out there to risk catching this virus by going with a sex worker. Pdoggg
Quote The country has just 200 ventilators that can trap air without spreading the virus, and most of them are in use. The three main hospitals in Bangkok specialising in Covid-19 treatment are already full Quote There are 10,184 ventilators available nationwide. Contradictory info. If the hospitals are at capacity, that would be a good reason for retaining tight restrictions.

Pdoggg
Enforcement of prohibited conduct varies greatly within Thailand. A Frenchman was fined 50K baht for talking to friends on the Beach Road Promenade. Elsewhere people were required to do 20 pushups or jumping jacks fro not wearing a mask while riding a motobike. The lack of a helmet did not seem to be a concern. JustSumGai
I'm going to pretend it's a sly way to see if someone starts a coughing fit and gasping for air so they can send em for testing, otherwise I might have to think it's a 3rd world country that thinks they've got the world fooled just by building skyscrapers, luxury malls and having coffee shops on every corner. They do all seem to be getting a laugh out of it tho. Helmets? we don't need no stinkin helmets. So far the average Songkran is about 4 times as deadly as the virus.
