Bill Maher

Remember also, Sam.....people from the states are loathe to say the dreaded "S" word.....we are afraid people will lump us in with the commies or even worse, that heathen Obama! Yikes.... so we have to be careful how we say "socialism", it's a dirty word to anyone who listens to talk radio or watches the ultra-evil Fox anti-news and has a negative stigma attached to it.

Myself, I think it's a good thing ....and when I see Maher on sunday night I am sure he will agree.

Perhaps the only thing scarier than the Republican presidential candidates are the right-wing crowds at their debates. At last night's Fox News debate, the crowd actually booed a gay soldier who asked a question about Don't Ask Don't Tell! At the first debate, mention of Rick Perry's record-setting number of state executions as governor drew huge applause. And the crowd at the first official Tea Party debate cheered just as raucously for the suggestion that the way to deal with a sick person without health insurance is to "let him die." Of course, in all these instances, the candidates said nothing to dissuade the crowd.

Bill Maher KILLED at the Theatre St. Denis last night!! The usual rants about Bachmann and Palin and the easiest target of all, organized religion, but for much longer than expected!

The whole show was almost 2 hours from start to finish....as I was telling my daughter afterwards, you have to admire someone who can entertain 2200 people [sell out] for 2 hours with few notes and all by himself; that is a daunting task.

Long standing ovation and a happy crowd poured out of that place at 10pm.....because I never had the chance to see George Carlin while he was alive, this was easily the best comedy show I have ever seen. Thanks, Bill! :good:

Just about one thousand years back JD I was attending university in Northern California at The University of California at Davis...and even though at that time we were internationally known for our departments of oenology and viticulture, we were still the stepchild of the California University system...known as the Aggies...and didn't have much in the way of fancy university facilities...Our only other claim was that we proudly sponsored the University of California at Davis All Male Marching Banda...But in time the University was sued by some young lady to gain entrance to the band (rightly so) and it became the University of California at Davis Almost All Male Marching Banda...

The only facility at that time on campus for large shows was Freeborn Hall...and it was like a huge basketball court...flat...all hardwood...with a stage at one end...and when someone would float in to give a show they would set up row after row of folding chairs...

Well one night George came wandering into UCD to bless us Aggie step-students with his words...This show was actually sponsored by the student association and not the University so instead of setting up rows of chairs they decided to have what we called in those days a pillow concert...Students brought pillows and blankets and food and whatnot and just found a spot on the hardwood floor and it became a kinda indoor late night picnic of sorts...

Show time and no fluff...Boys and girls...George Carlin...Well George came on and first off apologized to us all that the show might run a bit longer then planned...They had decided that they wanted to record the show for a potential album...So he was gonna do a lot of old material and a lot of new material and probably some material he hadn't even thought of yet...Nearly four hours later in a room filled with whatnot smoke and the smell of cheap beer George finally said his good nights to us all to the one of the most incredible standing ovations I have witnessed or been a part of...Mr. Carlin, the show, the setting were pure magic...and that evening has never been matched by anyone anywhere...Memories can sometimes be very good things JD...Thanks for the reminder...

One day I hope to get to see the new generation George...Bill Maher...I sure hope Archie doesn't get the opportunity to flatten his nose before I get to see him though...

Now you can all feel free to finger your prick...

Thanks for the report Kahuna, that must have been one of the greatest shows ever! George was the best, even his peers say that, and it will be a long while before we ever get someone that special ever again.

I also saw Dennis Miller, but that was years ago, maybe 1996 or so? Before he had turned ultra -right wing and started embarrassing himself by appearing on O'Really's ego-fest weekly. I also saw a guy named Robert Schimmell twice, now deceased and IMO one of the funniest guys ever.

Enjoyed Maher though and I never figured he would go for 2 hours, that ain't easy.

To most people, Bill Maher is nowhere near as funny as George Carlin (RIP). Carlin's bits were hilarious to everyone, not just a particular group. Even the review posted earlier said that Maher's show was "nearly two hours of political shtick, exclusively from the U.S."

Yeah, as much as I am a big fan of Maher, watch the show "religously" Carlin is in a loftier classification to me tho, alongside Lenny Bruce & Richard Pryor. But I hope to see Bill around here soon.

Looks like the big GOP money is starting to exert hard pressure on NJ Governor Christie to run for president they are so worried about losing to "O" next year. He's not a typical right winger, has called some of the right flank "crazy" or "wingnuts" or something. Interesting.... Like Obama he doesn't bring much previous experience in government.

Robert Schimmell is dead? I didn't know that, funny guy.

Sorry guys I didn't mean to offend you by suggesting that Bill is on the same level as George...Clearly he is not...

I truly haven't seen Bill all that much but what I have seen he makes me laugh...And in my mind that's a good thing...

But to suggest that George was simply a stand-up comedian for the masses and not a social and political critic is wrong...Cause he was...At least to my generation...

Carlin was around for a lot longer than Maher has been yet. Wait till Maher is mid 60s and looking back how he compares. You can't equitably compare two careers when one is so far from completion.

That said, Carlin was also a good author of books of comedy. I don't think Maher has anything equal in print form yet.

I can't stand that Maher douche bag, and I'm a fucking socialist. It's this weird ambivalence; you know, one the one hand, I mostly agree with many of the positions he takes on a lot of issues; on the other, his fucking smug face, his ego and his shitty jokes really annoy me.

I'd like to punch him too, Archie. :aggressive:

Just finished the new Bill Maher book.....awesome!

The guy is witty, smart, politically aware and his writing style is such that even a Republican could understand it! Well, maybe not Sarah Palin or Rick Perry or W, but most righties could even get what he is saying, even though they would disagree wholeheartedly.

An easy read, well worth picking up.....I downloaded it to my new kindle [which is also pretty cool] for 12 bucks, can't beat that.

Arguing over democrat or republican, or any presidential candidate running for high office in the U.S. is like ancient monks arguing over how many angles could dance on the head of pin. With all due respect to you guys, it's fucking POINTLESS. The political process IS A SHAM. YOU ARE WATCHING FUCKING WRASSLIN, you know, WWF or whatever they are calling it these days. It is a show put on by the rich to give all the poor dumb fucks the ILLUSION of democracy.

The political process serves the people who pay for it--simple. That means rich people and corporations. Any meaningful change IS IMPOSSIBLE until the entire system is either completely reformed or it collapses under its own dead weight.

I'd also agree that arguing about politics is pretty much impossible these days; if you run into someone with an opposing viewpoint God help you! And chatting with someone with a similar viewpoint is rather boring, just agreeing about the same shit all the time.

It never used to be this way, say 15-20-25 years ago. There was a MIDDLE, a place for moderates [which I still consider myself to be] and independent thinkers; now the far right has gone completely off the deep end into batshit territory and the left has moved into the center. Except for my buddy Lefty of course, as well as Janeane Garafalo and Al Franken and a few other die-hard holdouts, good for them. But Obama and his ilk have totally caved in to the right these past 3 years; people who call him a socialist or a communist are out of their minds, hell he isn't even a liberal!

Haven't lived in the USA for 32 months now and don't miss it one bit; I am still a citizen but prefer Canada in summers and Thailand in winters. Too much infighting and bullshit between the 2 major parties, who act like children and only cater to the special interests and corporate clowns who got them in there in the first place and who don't give a fuck about the people they are supposed to be working for.
