bumblebee
I was standing beside a public phone last night and it crossed my mind that I can't recall using one in about 12 years, since calling home from Spain. Do any of you guys still use them or are they now just relics of a time before Skype, smartphones, tablets etc? Quote Link to comment

JaiDee
good question, BB.....I would guess at least 5-6 years ago but can't really remember. Quote Link to comment
Jimslim
I can't use them in my home city because they are almost impossible to find apart from in shopping centers . A deliberate policy to force everyone to buy mobile phones a few years ago ? Pacman whatda ya think ? Quote Link to comment
pacman
I have no idea of the policy regarding public phone boxes in Ireland. My guess is they have disappeared because their maintenance costs the phone companies a lot of money. There is no conspiracy by the phone companies acting in concert with the major mobile phone manufacturers, the arrival of mobile phones is a handy convenience that provides an alternative service. One that doesn't cost the state money. In fact they profit from it, a win-win situation. The same thing has happened here. There are no phone boxes & you never hear a complaint about it. I remember being on the road & knowing the location of every phone box in town because I used them if I had to ring the office. That seems so last century along with writing letters & using a cheque book. Pacman whatda ya think ? I hope I have addressed your question. Quote Link to comment
duke007
There are plenty of Public Phone Boxes in my hometown The problem is you cant often put the coins in them, or if you do manage it they still dont fookin work and lose your money to boot Quote Link to comment
ciobha
" Lose your money to boot", what has brother DK got to do with all this Dukey? Are you saying he is the reason for the demise of the payphone??? Quote Link to comment
bumblebee
It just shows how things change so rapidly. I used them weekly back in the late 90s and also when traveling in Europe. Like Pacman I knew where all the convenient ones were when I lived in the west of Ireland. Nowadays I hardly notice them, maybe they are still around but don't have much relevance. A bit like TV repair men, there is not much call for them anymore. Quote Link to comment
