No, that's really just the start of a good rant, as their is far too much raw material here to stop at that.

American's (and I'm one) are often ignorant, xenophobic morons that have a lower IQ and lesser understanding of history and their own culture than a European or even (*shudder*) Canadian does. When I began traveling I discovered English is spoken more fluently by Pomme Frites vendors in Amsterdam than 50% of the professionals I work with here in the Good 'Ol USA.

The religious right has such an over-represented impact on our politics that most Americans have forgotten what really is important to them - liberty - and clamor to give up what little they have left in order to feel "protected" by Big Brother from some nutjob with a beard in a cave in Afghanistan.

Health Care (or "Obama Care" as they want to try to deem it) is a human right that should be available to every American at limited cost. Instead, the money to fund this is used to procure and build arms, pay corporations to build plants in Ireland or China, or incarcerate millions of americans for having a drug problem.

Speaking of "drug problems", America has one. But our problem with drugs is our repressive and institutional response to the health problems and choices made by our citizens, and not a problem with drugs itself. If we were to look at sensible solutions such as Harm Reduction as employed by many European governments, our drug problem would instantly shrink, as would our Prison Overcrowding and Mexican Destabilization problems. But because the right wing has so vilified this issue, it's one of the many "third rails" in American politics that can't be talked about sensibly without risking professional suicide if you are a politician.

I was watching a multi-part documentary about the history of Hollywood and came to realize that many of the "values" espoused by morons like Sara Palin or Rush Limbaugh have nothing to do with actual American history and experience, but everything to do with the sanitized "God and Country" view of America that was created by the Hollywood Moguls and the Hays and Breen Offices of the 1930's-1950's. Many of these immigrant moguls were worried about their patriotism being called into question and voluntarily allowed censorship of the artistic product while also creating a fake "moral code" to prove that they were good upstanding Americans who's status as citizens were beyond reproach. It's similar to the idea of a convert being far more dangerous than someone born into a belief system, as the fervor of the converted, like that of an immigrant trying to protect his "American" identity, leads to excess.

Bloody hell!! I wonder what do-do I would be in if I had written this? I wouldn't dare post it on a public forum but I find so much I agree with here. And Willie never mentioned the Patriot Act, the most insidious piece of legislation ever designed to remove the last rights from supposedly free people. Nor did he mention the chance of Donald Trump running for President... another first-class egotistical idiot who thinks he is so smart that he can run the world.

I was thrilled to see that Ron Paul is the current front runner for the GOP Presidential nomination. He is the only serving member of Government who gets it. The problem he has is his age & the fact that he will face such huge forces lined up against him. The whole world will be watching & hoping.

Until I actually met Tomcat, I wasn't sure of what sort of character I was dealing with. As always happens, he turned out to be another nice guy who didn't show any of the shit-stirring traits he might be tempted to display after a visit to the pub.
