If I may, I also have a question:   did you (Petesie) suffer a prior slip and fall accident or a rough blow to your leg? (in the last few weeks?)

I am asking this because some years ago I was pushed down a ravine and i got out of there but was told to be on the lookout for possible faint spells and tell those around me to take me to a hospital at the slightest sign.  The blood clots form in the leg as a result of impact and may travel to the lungs or heart causing the trombosis...

I’d had a couple of falls in recent weeks which I now know was a result of the Thrombosis; Dr has just been in & said he’d let me go tomorrow as I was in fine fettle, 2 more jabs in the belly & 5 more for Doris to give me at home…:bad:

BHP mate

Good to hear that you are at what most agree is the best hospital in Pattaya  especially if you have good insurance.

I've been wondering is if BHP has any sort of pre-acceptance plan, some sort of membership card of sorts that facilitates admitence?  That's the hospital where I'd want to go.

I'll be writing about my experience very shortly; if you don't mind I'd rather keep it in this thread to avoid any detractors or hyperbole.

Hi Petesie.  New told me last night at your gin joint that you get out of the hospital today.  This pic is respectfully meant as a "Get Well" card.  If you like it, there are more like it at my ongoing TR at the Romscars Club...   Cheers,

Just a heads up...

Part One

In Sickness & in Health & Insurance

Being sick here is a bitch; I've had 2 lots of Covid, a few flu's & food poisoning in the last 3 years but recent events changed all that, I got seriously ill with no warning. I'd been laid up for a few weeks with the above & thought I was over it. One night I fell over walking the pooch, few nights later I did the same splitting me bonce; I put it down to the drink but the next night I passed out before I went out, I stayed home but I knew something was wrong.

Doris tried to convince me to see a doc but I was convinced it would pass...it didn't, got to Soi MiT the next evening & I collapsed, couldn't get a breath., I told Doris to get me to the hospital which she did PDQ...

On the way she called her friend who got us our Health Insurance, she called ahead & they were ready for us...which was just as well...I was in a bad way...

Part Deux

Once into the ICU I was pounced upon by Doctors & Nurses, put on a bed & vitals & blood taken, given an ECG to check my heart & put on an IV, within 30 mins I was off for an MRI scan & dye pumped into me so the image would show any issues, you can feel the dye going round your body...

Wheeled back & the Dr told me they had found evidence of thrombosis in both my lungs, an admin lady showed up, introduced herself then asked Doris how much my insurance was, I heard her say 5m & the lady smiled & walked away. Within 30 mins another Dr showed up with an Ultrasound machine & showed me how the blood clots were affecting my heart causing it to be enlarged as it could not get enough Oxygen. I was then told I would be staying for 5 nights...

I was confused & just wanted some meds & go home...the doc told her if I went home I wouldn't last the night (in Thai). So I agreed to stay the night, they wanted to keep me in the ICU but I didn't fancy spending the night in an open ward so I was wheeled up to what I later found out was a VIP room but I was too distraught to settle, a nurse showed up & I had the first injection of Heparin in my stomach & took my vitals. Someone turned up every few hours & took my vitals; I was also wired up to what can be described as an over sized Walkman which transmits your vitals to your profile on the BHP computer.

Oddly enough a stay in the ICU was more expensive as you're being constantly monitored...tbc.

Medical Insurance

I'd previously looked at a few insurance companies; I had been with AXA a few years back & had no issues...one of our BM's recently had an issue with them finding out they wouldn't pay up his claim; they were now Thai run. I was also looking at Pacific Cross; another of our BM's was with them & personally knew he had no issues when he had a kidney op.

The only caveat was you had to be with them for a year before making a claim.  Doris's old schoolmate is an agent for AIA, a Thai company, I was dubious but she sold us a VIP package around 6 months ago...I was still dubious but she came through the other night by calling the BHP ahead so they were waiting for us & we got the VIP treatment indeed; I was still not happy & wanted out of there but she advised to follow doctors orders to avoid voiding any claim...so we did. The room was excellent...by the way, I took the pics because the Insurance Company asked me too...

Part 3

Next day I was still as weak as a wee kitty cat & they insisted I didn't move about a lot so me & my new bed & me got wheeled down to imaging & Ultrasound so they could check my legs.I thought the hefty nurse was being a bit rough with me but soon realised she was squeezing my calfs to get the blood flowing up to my thighs for the Dr to see on screen; I could also see on the wall screen a lot of black looking lumps which had me worried.

A wheel back up & 20 mins later the Consultant appeared & told me my right leg was fine , lower left leg was fine but I had more clots at the top of my left leg...in the meantime another jab in my belly (every 12 hours) & BP, Oxy Levels, Temp monitored every 2 hours; this went on throughout the night too...Doris was finishing early & staying the night after she'd dropped Nok off to look after the Nips...after the rigours of this week she could do with a good kip.

Part 4

My appetite returned on Friday so I enjoyed Lunch & Dinner of Poached Sea Bass, another visit by the Doc who was pleased at what he could see & hear & told me he would review my case in the morning...Saturday Morning I was quite alive though they took me down to imagining in a wheelchair as the Dr didn't want me moving around too much. He gave me a thorough Ultrasound telling me my lungs were clear & my heart had returned to it's normal size.

I was wheeled back & he popped in telling me he was happy with my condition and I was being released.

So what did I miss? What I (& Doris) took as being a drunken sod lately was actually vertigo as a result of oxygen starvation. My recent falls & passing out are testiment to this; I have an appointment for review next Friday. I had no chest pains only in the latter part shortness of breath.

The cure? I'll take it fairly easy as the Dr told Doris I should be for the next few day; I used to walk 8k a day, I'll be slowly chasing that & I'll be watching my diet once my strength is back, I'll also be building back the muscle mass I've lost...100 push ups a day to zero.

I do know one thing for sure...if it hadn't been for the sheer professionalism & quality of the Medical team at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya & perseverance of Doris...I wouldn't be here.

Good health chaps.

I shall miss the view..B)

Thanks for that insight Peter, good you had solid health insurance to cover your requirements. I am not sure if it is Ulster Scots mindset, but I would probably have had the same reaction as yourself - soldier on and I will be alright in the morning. Hard to believe how what we think are such minor things can be so life threatening. Moral of the story I suppose, if you don't feel right, se a doctor, worst (best) he can tell you is to stop being a drama queen and get yer arse out if his office, fook all wrong with ya.

A really good sign that you're well on the road to recovery!

Do you have the option of returning to the hospital for the remaining shots?  I get like most of us you don't like hospitals but I wouldn't want my missus giving me jabs in the stomach.

My future concern is being admitted smoothly to BHP in case I was unconscious.  I have very good insurance so I want the best hospital.  At least I think I have very good insurance but haven't had any claims yet knock on wood.

My wording may be a bit off but I'm looking for a guarantee of admittance, not necessarily that my insurance will pay out.   Besides the phone call was there anything you did months in advance to pave the way?

The Nurse taught Doris how to do it with injector type needle like Diabetics use but these were filled with Blood Thinners, I never felt a thing. Or you can do it yourself it's no drama or pain. We did not do anything in advance; our VIP insurance package gave us the choice; I would suggest rockin' up there sometime & just ask them, or check with your insurance company that you can use BHP.

TBH having just been through it I would not go with anyone else regardless of cost; not knowing me from Adam they got to the bottom of it within a couple of hours, I wouldn't fancy being bounced from pillar to post with another badly managed Hospital. B)

The Dr told me to rest up for a week or so...we went to Boontavorn this afternoon to get 10 boxes of tiles for our drive, popped upstairs to pick out new furniture for our home & 2nd condo, Doris dropped me off at Central where I bought a guitar from a fella, picked up some take out from Bon Chon, Doris picked me from Central then we went to Centric Sea Condo's where I sold a guitar to a nice French fella, on the way home we bought 6 new chairs for the bar now we're off to the bar..B)

Alice is a star & looks like Nanny has snuck back in...
