Yes, another book about ladyboys...

Let me introduce myself and my partner. I'm Jerry Hopkins, a longtime resident of Thailand, an established bestselling author with some 36 books published, including biographies of Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison. (My webpage is jerryhopkins.com.) I am working on a what will be a coffee-table type book about Thai ladyboys with John Wehrheim, a Hawaii-based photographer who has done two such books before, one about Bhutan, the other with a Hawaii subject. We are planning to profile at least 25 ladyboys in our book, both in text and photographs, and by profile I mean really get into their lives and tell their stories both in text and visuals. I am posting this here to ask your help. I'm asking you to nominate people to profile...and I'd like to talk with you, too, either in person, by email or on Skype. I live near the Nana Plaza and a meeting would be easy and preferable. You can find me at jerry@jerryhopkins.com if you are interested. I hope some of you are. Thank you.

Jerry, so glad to see you made it over here. I hope you'll find a more welcoming response here then you did on that "other" LB forum that you posted your request to.

I've already sent you my suggestions, so I probably don't have much to offer here other than another "welcome" and thank you for stopping by. Hopefully you'll stick around here, this forum and it's members have a lot to offer.

I only go to LOS once annually and have only made 4 pilgrimages so far, but I'm definitely excited to see how the project comes out. I'd love to get a REAL glimpse behind the veil of these girls lives.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance to you Jerry.

P.S. - I loved the Doors book of course, as well as both Bangkok Babylon and Thailand Confidential.

Welcome Jerry.

Sounds like a very interesting project.

I am interested in knowing more about what happens ladyboys grow older.

Also, I think that it is extremely important to note that the majority of LB's are NOT pay for play and have nothing to do with the Nana Plaza, Patpong, or Pattaya crowd. Please don't just focus on the the "working girls". It seems to me as though the Thai hooker has gotten plenty of coverage already.

Then there are also the gray areas...100% ladyboy? femboy? transitionig?

This will be a fascinating project filled with interesting stories and great photo possibilities.

Best of luck!

RJS

Jerry has been living in Thailand for over 20 years and shtupping ladyboys for a lot longer than that. Guys, let's not preach to the choir.

And, if I'm not mistaken, the context of the book has been set, by those involved -- it's to be about sex workers, and that's it. He hasn't told you how to be a squirrel; we shouldn't tell him how to write his book.

Welcome, Jerry! You're amongst friends, cock sucker... :pardon:

sorry, but now i'm a bit confused. yeah, i know, nothing new there, but....

if Jerry has more experience with ladyboys than most of the mongers here could possibly have, then why has he come to this board to ask for introductions and 'nominations'?

after twenty years i'd think i'd have a pretty good idea of who i wanted to profile.

and as for not telling him 'how to write his book'--well, we kinda would be doing that if we determined the characters/people he was going to profile.

they say 90% of good directing is good casting and i'm thinking that about 90% of making this book a good book is picking the proper people to profile. the rest of it is just syntax.

and photographs.

so if the context (content?) has been predetermined to be limited to sex workers, so be it. that's information squirrel clearly didn't have prior to your revelation thereof-- and without that limitation (against which i would struggle mightily) i would heartily concur with his squirrelness--there's more to being a ladyboy than hooking.

for example, there's ex-hooking.

(now where's that emoticon for 'stirring the pot' that i've been looking for to substitute for the tongue-in-cheek emoticon that i've already given up on ever finding...)

ps

seriously, Jerry, if you have the best interests of the ladyboys you interview at heart as you write, i wish you only the best of luck with your book.

Hey, guys…thanks for your enthusiastic response. You’re a friendly bunch, but you sometimes remind me of the chickens on my farm upcountry: you sure do like to cluck and crow and peck. I appreciate your support and look forward to meeting you, if you’ll either write me at my email address or approach me in a bar some night. Some already have. No names, because that seems to be the name of the ladyboy game.

Someone asked why, if I have more years as a ladyboy lover than many others, would I come to the forums for help. Let me just say that those with whom I’ve either talked or exchanged emails already have taught me a lot. I have never said I’m an expert in this tricky lifestyle and I don’t expect to meet anyone who is. But my book will be worth reading only after many sources and points of view are consulted. I’m even talking to venue owners, the surgeons and the cops.

One of the things we want to show in the book is the variety of experience in being a kathoey sex worker, along with the variety of type. Thus, I am looking for individuals who are “different”---an athlete, a porn star, an alcohol/drug-user, an illegal (foreigner), girls whose families were cool about it and those whose families weren’t, post-ops as well as pre-ops, a dancer, a waitress who works in a bar, a cabaret worker, a massage parlor worker, a part-timer (who is a student or has a regular job), someone who mainly works the Net (dating sites, Facebook, etc.), a streetwalker, an escort, a femboy, someone who’s done time in prison, someone who serves the locals and not farang, a mamasan, a retired hooker, etc.

As for putting it on your coffee table, no worries. I realize why so many believe they must adopt nicknames and are so secretive. Coming out and admiring ladyboys openly would be to offer them more respect and perhaps one day those who think they can’t now will do that. In the meantime, all praise the forums and when the book is published, Kindle and iPad and Nook.

Janet, who some refer to as "Lights Out Janet" would fit the bill. She is an muay thai expert and seems to enjoy being public as I saw her in a lip synching contest on Thai TV. She either works or used to work at Cascade.

Not sure where Bobo is these days but she was in a band called Venus Fly Trap.

well...i do know this one volleyball-playing webcam porn actress meth-head who sneaked into thailand when she ran away from home because her father wouldn't stop fucking with her--but her mother loved her--and she's a pre-op, but she'll be a post-op right about the time the book comes out, when she can finally take time off from her job where she's been cast as a dancing waitress in a cabaret show upstairs from a massage parlor she runs when she's not at university or browsing Facebook. except of course when she's turning tricks in street clothes without m.u. because she doesn't want the cops to pick her up again for being so non-discriminating with who she goes with.

and i believe she just retired.

let me give her a jingle and i'll get back at ya.

Good stuff thaibound!!! I ran into her the other day and she told me to say hello to you. She's looking terrific by the way. :)

Sorry, Sam, but if the girl you spoke with had any good words for me it wasn't the girl i'm describing. She totally hates me.

But it might have been her twin sister.

You think Jerry would be interested in identical twins?

TB I would be interested in identical twins!

Jerry, might I suggest talking to Cartoon from KC3. I only met her once, but she is not shy, at 22 years and has done tons of internet porn and is a awesome gogo dancer to boot! If you google her she told me the first website she worked for spelled her name wrong, and it's Cartun.

welcome to LBR, would love to get a drink with you sometime!

Yes, Janet is still at Cascade and sure Jerry knows her.

Jerry, any update on the book? I'm still very interested in the project and can't wait to see the results.

Would love to know if any girls we are familiar with are going to make the "final cut". (Sorry - probably a dubious choice of wording, but you know what I mean).

Hello again...yes, I have been upcountry, but now I'm back. I have just finished the manuscript for another book and although I'm sure the editor will want me to do this and that, I can now devote more time to the ladyboy book. Sorry, I don't think it a good idea to reveal the names of those being considered for inclusion. I'm confident of several but they may change their minds, or something may not work out the way we all hope as we go forward. Let me say that some of those you suggested have been interviewed at least once. Once I have a dozen or so, my photographer will return from Hawaii, we'll prepare at least two full text and photo profiles for the proposal and then nail down the book deal. This is a book that could be available in about a year, but no sooner. Good books take time. Meanwhile, I'm still asking for nominations. Keep in mind that I'm not looking for a good time (although I've rarely run away from one) but, first and foremost, a good story. Thanks again for your interest and support. If you see me in the bars, come up and say hi....Jerry
