  1. How long does it take one drop of water to travel the length Mississippi River?
  2. A ferry from Koh Samui capsized two nautical miles (2.3 miles) before reaching Donsak pier on the mainland. 7 people are missing. Last night was quite windy on the Pattaya side of the Gulf of Thailand. The waves were kicking on Jomtien Beach. I love windy nights. If raining indoors; if not raining best time to be out and about. This was not a passenger ferry. There were a few garbage trucks and other vehicles on board. So far there are nine survivors. I guess it's a judgment call as when to operate in choppy waters. I suppose the standard might be looser for ferries without too many passengers.
  3. You're referring to the Whisper. Neta is just across the soi, on the right hand side if headed to Buakhao. Many of you might be wondering where the fook is the Hershey Highway and where's the casino? There is an unamed soi which some of us call the Hershey Highway that goes from Soi 15 near the Urban Condo up to Soi Buakhao bt the almost deserted Blue Ratree beer bar complex not too far from Action Street. Both ends of the soi are concrete but the middle is dirt and can get muddy after a downpour hence the niickname, Hershey Highway. Casino? On this soi is a secret casino, fenced in, the gate only opening for vehicles. No idea which games are played there. I've only seen Asians going in and out. It is quite possible that farang are not welcome. I am interested in learning more about this joint so if anyone knows, please speak up.
  4. There will be less draftees and more volunteers this year so we probably won't be seeing Private Sunny! The ongoing annual military draft period has been postponed from April because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Under the Military Service Act, all Thai men who reach the age of 21 are required to register for the military draft. Those who do not volunteer must take part in a lottery. Around 100,000 men are drafted annually to serve in the three branches of the armed forces. Deputy army spokeswoman Col Sirichan Nga-tong said this year the number of those who volunteer to join the armed forces considerably increased. She said the main reason was that the COVID-19 pandemic had reduced job opportunities. Many men who wished to join the military said it was an easy decision because they could serve the country and did not have to worry about their income. https://tna.mcot.net/english-news-485393
  5. I posted about this hotel before but I didn't want it to get lost in a big thread so am giving Neta its own thread because the deal is so good. If you are coming down from Bangkok for a weekend it is my recommendation. During Corona time at the 500 baht price point in a super convenient Pattaya location you can often get a nice enough room but it may be lacking a lift, a pool, gym, daily cleaning, or a safety box. We're not talking about a huge pool or big gym but hey it's 500 baht. Neta is a nice new hotel with a 500 baht walk in rate. You can confirm that this rate exists by calling 091 761 5335. Note sometimes you will see good rates for condos but there is often a charge if you want the room cleaned and also a mandatory final clean. My original post below: If I was coming down to Pattaya for a few nights, I'd stay at the Neta Resort. It's on Booking .com and Agoda for 756 baht (642 + 114=756 on Agoda) but there is a sign outside with a walk in rate of just 500 baht. This is normally a 1500 baht a night place, quite nice just off the quiet end of Soi 15 next to the Urban Condo (not the busy end near Buakhao). Pool, gym, lift etc. No contest between Neta and the old walkups around Buakhao. Here's the website so you can see pics and info but the walk in promotion is not on the website. It wont be full so don't worry about a reservation. But you can call 091 761 5335 to verify the 500 baht walk in rate. http://www.netaresortpattaya.com
  6. VietJet has a promo for 5 baht (does not include tax and surcharges) for flights booked Aug 1-5 for flights in Aug and Sept. VietJet just launched a route from Swampy to Khon Kaen and had Buri Ram morlam superstar Ying Lee perform onboard.
  7. Odd timing. One of the two witnesses whose testimony reportedly convinced prosecutors to drop all charges against Red Bull scion Vorayuth "Boss" Yoovidhya died following a motorcycle crash in Chiang Mai province in the early hours of Thursday. Jaruchart Maadthong, 40, was involved in a motorcycle crash at 1am. He died shortly after at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. His body was sent for an autopsy and would be brought to Chiang Rai for funeral rites, according to Thai media reports. His family and relatives said they knew nothing about his involvement in the high-profile case. The Chiang Rai native was one of two new key witnesses added to the case two years ago. The other was a retired officer, Air Marshal Jakkrit Thanomkulabutr. Both testified that the Ferrari was travelling at 50-60 km/hour when the crash occurred. The two witnesses also testified that they saw a policeman on a motorcycle abruptly cut in front of Mr Vorayuth’s Ferrari, causing him to hit the bike. As a result, the dead policeman was named another suspect in the case alongside Mr Vorayuth. Both were due to meet the House panel on justice and laws on Aug 5. Sira Janejaka, chairman of the panel, urged the police chief to give protection to the air marshal as he was the only remaining key to a trial.
  8. The House of Representatives quietly voted Thursday to block the Trump administration's restriction on transgender individuals serving in the military, as part of a $695 billion defense spending bill. Lawmakers adopted by voice vote an amendment offered by Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) that would block funding for the Pentagon's latest transgender troop policy, which went into effect in April 2019.
  9. There is now new competition as Bolt has just launched in Bangkok. BANGKOK (Reuters) - Bolt, a popular ride-sharing system in Eastern Europe and Africa, said on Wednesday it has rolled out its platform in Thailand as competition intensifies among Southeast Asian ride-hailers with cities gradually emerging from the lockdown. Bolt, backed by Daimler and China’s Didi Chuxing, said its pilot venture in the Thai capital has more than 2,000 drivers and will offer better rates to drivers and riders. “For a minimum of six months, Bolt in Thailand commits to charging drivers no commission for using the platform and offers fares 20% lower than other competitors,” the Estonian company said. The announcement comes as drivers of well-funded rivals including Singapore-based Grab, backed by SoftBank Group, and Indonesia’s Go-Jek struggled due to the coronavirus crisis that devastated global economies. The pandemic has also raised doubts whether the ride-hailing firms can maintain their promise of improving the lives of millions of poor. These services were already reeling under high costs even before the outbreak.
  10. A group of students held their first “pride parade” in Thailand by marching nearly two kilometres from the Nitas Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall on Wednesday (July 29) to the Education Ministry to demand equality for their LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) peers. Several members also symbolically cut their hair or removed their male students’ uniforms to reveal a blouse and skirt underneath. They called on the ministry to revise the contents of health-education textbooks, saying the content is outdated and does not cover topics such as different sexual orientations, which leads to people misunderstanding the LGBTQ group. https://www.nationthailand.com/news/30392102

    Coronavirus

Bangkok, 29 July, 2020 – Thailand has ranked number one in the world out of 184 countries for its ongoing COVID-19 recovery effort, according to the Global COVID-19 Index (GCI). Published on 28 July, Thailand received an index score of 82.06, putting it on top of the global chart as an example of best practices in tackling the ongoing global pandemic. As of today, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand stood at 3,298, with 129 currently being treated, while 3,111 have recovered and 58 have died. South Korea ranked second with a recovery index of 81.09, followed by Latvia (80.81), Malaysia (79.37), Taiwan (78.94) and New Zealand (78.55). Australia, which used to be number one in previous months, fell to seventh, with a recovery index of 77.18. In the previous GCI ranking published on 14 June, Thailand came in second for its COVID-19 recovery work among 184 nations across the globe. The GCI bases 70 per cent of its calculation on big data and daily analysis from 184 countries, while the other 30 per cent comes from the Global Health Security Index, an assessment of global health security in 195 countries prepared by the Johns Hopkins Centre for Health Security in the United States. https://www.tatnews.org/2020/07/thailand-ranked-number-one-on-the-global-covid-19-recovery-index/
  13. Spot on SP! I think many businessmen underestimate risk. Some fail because of weak management. The tragic thing though is that a bar could be doing everything right and through hard work and smart work be successful and have it all wiped away because of the pandemic. Risks such as "what if tourism falls by 20%" or "what if customer preferences change such as preferring Treeetown or Chaiyapoon instead of Action Street or Soi 7" are something a prospective business owner should take into consideration. But who could foresee that tourism drops 99%?

    Chaos 9 Soi 4

Chaos 9 is back on Soi 4 but not in Rajah Complex location. It's now located near the end of Soi 4, about an 8 minute walk from Nana Plaza, same side as Nana just before a 7/11. It might have been here for quite awhile but I just stumbled upon it as I needed to be in Bangkok for a few nights. It appears that they have three ladyboys working working there now and they hang outside on the rail so pthose passing by can see them. One of them from Laos seems friendly and attractive. So if you hate the NEP shitpits, here is a relaxed Soi 4 alternative.
  15. Wonder if Somchai from Nakhon Nowhere would have had the charges against him dropped if he drove like a Boss?
  16. In a shock ending to a case which has dragged on for years, charges against Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya, in a 2012 hit and run incident – one that resulted in a police officer’s death – have been dropped. Vorayuth is heir to the Red Bull fortune and a member of one of Thailand’s wealthiest families. The Office of the Attorney General of Thailand made the decision to stop pursuing the charges against Yoovidhya in a court of law, resulting in Thai police reportedly dropping the charges. As a spokesman for the Royal Thai Police told CNN this morning that the department has followed the decision of the Attorney General’s office and revoked the warrant for Yoovidhya’s arrest. The deputy head of Bangkok’s Thonglor police station, also reportedly confirmed the revocation of the arrest warrant to the associated press. For years, Yoovidhya had an Interpol “red notice”, meaning a worldwide request for his arrest pending extradition, but the notice mysteriously disappeared from the Interpol website earlier this year and no explanation has been given. Interpol declined to discuss individual cases but told the Bangkok Post that generally a published notice is removed from its website if “the suspect has been arrested and extradited or died, the country which requested it has withdrawn its request, the judicial authorities in the country behind the notice have withdrawn the national arrest warrant against a suspect, the notice is the subject of an appeal or the notice has been cancelled or the status of the notice has changed from public to restricted”. 35 year old Boss had been facing charges of speeding, hit-and-run and reckless driving causing death. They relate to the 2012 incident in which Boss, driving a black Ferrari, hit a police officer and allegedly fled the scene, after dragging the officer for some distance. The officer later died. Boss allegedly admitted to driving the vehicle but claimed that the police officer had cut in front of him. The case caused widespread outrage in Thailand. Boss was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time. Authorities claimed they had been searching for Boss, who missed at least 8 court appearances over at least 5 years before managing to flee the country. Officially, Boss has been “missing” for years, although he has been spotted in public numerous times in London and elsewhere. Thai police claim they have been trying to find him. Boss is the son of Thailand’s second richest man and the grandson of the founder of Red Bull. His father’s estimated wealth is in the billions of dollars, according to Forbes magazine. https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/crime/hit-and-run-charges-against-red-bull-heir-boss-yoovidhya-dropped
  17. HANOI (Reuters) - The airport in the central Vietnamese tourism hotspot of Danang was packed on Monday after three residents tested positive for the coronavirus and the evacuation of 80,000 people began. The Southeast Asian country is back on high alert after authorities on Saturday confirmed the first community infections since April, and another three cases on Sunday, all in or around Danang. Danag Evac 2020 Saigon Evac 1975 A further 11 cases linked to a Danang hospital were reported late on Monday. The evacuations of mostly local tourists will take at least four days with domestic airlines operating approximately 100 flights daily from Danang to 11 Vietnamese cities, the government said. Vietnam has also reintroduced social distancing measures in Danang. Nguyen Tien Nam, an English teacher based in Ho Chi Minh City, said he had got on the last flight out of Danang on Sunday night. “Everyone was just trying to get out of the city on Sunday,” said Nam. “Everyone was telling me that I should get out as soon as possible.” By imposing strict quarantine measures and carrying out an aggressive testing programme during the pandemic, Vietnam has kept its tally of reported infections to 431, with no deaths. Vietnam is still closed to foreign tourism, but there had been a surge in domestic travellers looking to take advantage of discounted flights and holiday packages to local resorts. Those returning from Danang to other parts of the country would have to quarantine at home for 14 days, the health ministry said. Genome analysis by scientists showed that the strain of the coronavirus found in Danang had not previously been detected in the country, Vietnam’s health minister said, according to state broadcaster VTV. The strain, which had been found in Bangladesh, Britain and Ireland, appeared to be more contagious than other strains detected in Vietnam, VTV said. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc ordered police to step up a crackdown on illegal immigration. State media on Sunday said police in Danang had arrested a 42-year-old Chinese man it said was the head of a criminal group which helps people illegally enter Vietnam from China. Authorities have not officially linked the new cases in Danang to illegal immigration. The government said that authorities in Ha Giang province, which borders China, had caught more than 1,500 people illegally crossing into the province since May. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-vietnam/hundreds-jam-airport-as-evacuations-from-vietnams-danang-begin-idUSKCN24S0C0
  18. Here are Hua Hin's baht bus routes. I can't vouch for accuracy; perhaps someone who goes there frequently knows for sure.
  19. Recently stayed at the Alt Hotel and had an enjoyable stay. Friendly staff, nice room, small pool, and close to Chaos 9 ladyboy bar. If staying there I highly recommend prepaying for their brekkie as it sells for 300 baht but online you can often get it for just slightly more than the room alone. Brekkie starts at 6AM and ends at 11AM.. They have extremely good coffee with the beans being ground just seconds before brewing. Nice selection of buffet food and also eggs cooked to order. Another nice thing is strong wifi that works without a password. It's very frustrating when hotels require passwords or limit the number of devices that can be used at once. Caveats: 1) Although it is listed as Soi 2 you cannot get there by going up Soi 2 from Sukhumvit. Instead you must go up Soi 4 and turn right at the Woraburi and walk for about 2 minutes. 2) There is night time construction on Soi 4 so you cannot go by taxi from NEP to the Alt at night by way of Soi 4. I guess you might be able to go by Soi 6 but Soi 6 is a one way street and the wrong way for cars heading from Sukhumvit so that may not be an alternative. Think you can go to the end of Soi 10 and then back into Soi 4 that way. It's only a 10 minute walk from NEP but could be problematic if pouring and u have a girl with you. This applies to both the Alt and Woraburi. The Woraburi is currently closed but how would they compare if both open? 1) Location: Virtually the same location but the Woraburi is slightly closer to everything. 2) Breakfast: Woraburi has a somewhat better selection but the food quality and atmosphere is better at the Alt. The coffee is no contest with the Alt a clear winner. A cup of Alt coffee would be a 100 baht elsewhere 3) Pool: Woraburi is a clear winner here as a better pool for swimming, sunning, and lounging. 4) Intangibles: The staff at the Alt is very friendly while at the Woraburi I found them efficient but not overly friendly. 5) My choice: Whichever is cheaper. I find that the exact same room at the Woraburi can vary greatly for no apparent reason. Here's a link to the Alt. Alt Soi 2 If you are booking with Agoda or Booking dotcom we would very much appreciate if you use our links.

    Obituaries

Olivia DeHavilland, Gone With he Wind's last surviving cast member passed away at the ripe old age of 104. She played the role of Melanie. The film has been criticised for the glorification of the Confederacy as well as the legitimisation of marital rape by showing Scarlett with a wonderful afterglow the morning after a proper pounding aka known as forcible rape. Here Rhett speaks the famous line, "Frankly Scarlett, I don't give a flying fuck".
  21. BANGKOK (Reuters) - Hundreds of Thai LGBT activists and allies raised rainbow flags on Saturday evening as they called for democracy and equal rights, the latest in a series of youth protests calling for the government to step down. Several youth-led demonstrations have sprung up across the country since last week, when thousands of Thai activists defied a coronavirus ban on gatherings and staged one of the largest street rallies since a 2014 military coup. The activists on Saturday danced and sang and performed stand-up comedy sketches making jabs at the government of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, a former army chief who ousted an elected government six years ago. Pride flags were waved against the backdrop of Bangkok’s Democracy Monument. “We’re here today mainly to call for democracy. Once we achieve democracy, equal rights will follow,” said a 21-year-old activist who went by a made-up name, Viktorious Nighttime. “The LGBT group do not yet have equal rights in society, so we’re calling for both democracy and equality,” added Viktorious, who was wearing a glittery tiara and a face mask. The calls came after Thailand’s cabinet backed a civil partnership bill earlier this month that would recognise same-sex unions with almost the same rights as married couples. Saturday’s gathering was the latest in a series of protests under the Free Youth movement, which has issued three demands: the dissolution of parliament, an end to harassment of government critics, and amendments to the military-written constitution. “Even if they don’t step down from power today, we want to let them know that we won’t go anywhere, we will be here,” said a 21-year-old protestor who gave her name as Yaya. “Even if they get rid of us, our ideology will never die, we will pass this on to the next generation.” https://www.reuters.com/article/us-thailand-protests/thai-lgbt-activists-raise-pride-flag-in-anti-government-rally-idUSKCN24Q0NV

    Coronavirus

The secularisation of society is a natural evolution in educated, prosperous countries. But there is evidence that some not too religious left leaning churchgoers now perceive occasional churchgoing as being on the wrong side of the culture war.
