Sorry to disagree with virtually everyone here, but having recently come back from Pattaya, with the exception of Roadhouse & the 69 Bar which I haven't yet been to, I really wouldn't recommend any of these bars to a newcomer (& that's in spite of one of my very best friends on the scene owning one of these bars)... Personally, I feel that you could well be thrown to the dogs here St James. If you don't mind the trek try T.J's Soi 14, Naklua... It's managed very responsibly & the staff are polite & attentive without being pushy... And it's got just about the warmest & friendliest atmosphere of any ladyboy bar that I've ever encountered.

Well punk would have at very least had a much different face without them, that's for sure, Jim. Anyway, what a shame, I loved the Ramones & they most definitely put the 'pop' into punk... RIP Tommy Ramone

Dtac do they're own range here in Thailand which are actually made by Huwai, a high end brand from China which is trying to get into the market here. I had a 4.0", it was a great little phone until I lost it & the only criticism that I had was that the sound wasn't quite loud enough for me... But it's probably fine for a younger person Anyway, I won't be buying another one because I'm stingy & irresponsible... And I'll only lose the thing drunk. It's not a bad looking beast & the 4.0" comes in at around 2,750 baht, whilst the 4.5" is about 3,500 baht. I'd recommend them to anybody, but I'm not sure if they'll be any good in the UK or anywhere else for that matter?

Chiang Mai's nightlife is definitely more conducive to quiet drinks & chats, that's for sure & that's why I like it... That & the vibrant freelance scene!!! Ok, moving off topic a little, but I'm sure Sam won't mind.. Anyway, if you've got the time? Do yourself a favour, Hefe, & download yourself, Julien Temple’s "Imaginary Man" & Ray Davies "The world from my window"... They're two superb documentaries about The Kinks & Ray Davies, respectively, which are well worth a watch! If my memory serves me right? I think that they got banned by the American musicians union for some pretty nasty stage antics including one fight with a drummer where Ray Davies actually got knocked out on stage, it was a damm shame because they were actually spear heading the 'British invasion', at the time, but lost a crucial handful of years in the American market which could of had popular musical history looking at them in a far more favourable light. Just thought of some great r&r songs by the Stones myself.. And all from the same period too.. 'Start me up' 'Emotional Rescue' 'She's so cold' I still love the Stones, but just think that 'The Kinks' did far more to influence the scene.

30 years ago maybe, before they started wearing incontinence pants. Just a thought... Whilst there's no doubting the far reaching influence of a number like 'Satisfaction', as someone who did half of his growing up in the same town that Jagger, Watts & Richard's come from & actually attended the same school as Jagger & Watts for a while too; I can tell you flat out, that in spite of being north London rivals, locally 'The Kinks' were held in a far higher regard & had a much stronger influence. And if I had to think why? Then I'd probably say that it's down to their no nonsense, savvy, social commentary, wit, style & common touch, which we could more easily identify with whilst the Stones remained distant... They moved us & helped to mould us, they really did... But that's as a band & I can't really think of any one 'influential' track.... Although they most definitely were 'Dedicated followers of fashion' & 'Lola' still rocks, (especially in our little world) Now before all you Stones lovers start baying for my blood, I'd just like to add that this was purely a local phenomena... And I'm more than aware that most of the rest of the world loves the Stones & has probably never heard of the Kinks.

Ok, we've covered the pre history, so I'm going with what I think really shaped the modern scene & gave us (or at least, spring boarded) that bit of 'dark & 'dirty edge', which is now ingrained in the modern pop culture that we all now know & love today... And that's just got to be 'Be bop a Lula' by Gene Vincent. Most definitely not one of my favourites, but without the fame & recognition which it brought him, there'd have been no Johnny Rotten, no anti culture in music, no kids wanting to spit at their parents & teachers, no being cool to have a nervous breakdowns or self harm... I could go on... And no... and on..... It's all wonderful stuff!

Off kilter indeed, Lance, 5555555 If it wasn't for the army & police plotting up at Tharpae Square right now, I'd say fuck the bars & take a load of beers there, because the freelancers WILL come to you & if & when they want a drink I either give them some of mine out of the stash in the back box on my bike, or I run over to 7/11 to buy them one!!!!... Sorted. It's a bit of a midnight onwards thing to do, but it's a lot of fun & without the attitudes too!.. Plus I get to drink my preference of dark beer Lao... And at Makro prices too, 42 baht per bottle!!!! And besides, some of these greedy mares from the bars (especially the freelance staff who can leave when they want or when the bar isn't busy), could well turn up as well... And with a completely different, more grateful outlook, usually quoting knock down prices for their services.
