  1. AIS works for me. I tried Dtac and True in the past and switched back to AIS. Better coverage and average speeds from my limited personal experience. Like others suggested, the 450baht pre-paid plan for data and probably another 100baht for voice and texts as a backup plan. Before you leave the country you can use the voice and texts credit to extend the SIM expiry date (http://help.mobiletopup.com/knowledge-base/how-do-i-extend-the-expiry-date-validity-of-my-sim/). You will need a passport to register your new SIM. If you're using the airport kiosks make sure they understand you want a monthly flat rate data only package. They tried to sell me on other plans that have a mix of voice and data and are less effective if data is your main concern. I never had that in Tukcom. I guess the guys at the airport are used to selling to tourists coming here for a couple of weeks and looking to make international calls (calling home). Make sure to bring more condoms as being omnipresent through thaifriendly and line, and with your lack of self discipline, the duke is going to be a very busy boy :)
  2. Having a digital copy is a good idea but you should also carry some form of physical document (paper /laminated /plastic member's-card) listing all the necessary insurance details. In case you get in a bad accident the medics will go through your pockets looking for it and it will decide whether you end up in the best, most expensive hospital, or the public, least desirable one. If the information is on your phone it will be inaccessible when it mostly matters. Regrettably this happened to a friend so this is not just a hypothetical scenario. On top of my insurance member's-card I also carry my agent's business card so the hospital has an alternative contact person who can brief them on the status of my insurance plan. The difference in level of care, ER equipment, and doctors' expertise between public and private hospitals in Thailand is shocking.
  3. From one dragons' den to another, how about this one:
  4. Jenny Star Bar! I used to go behind the escalator and enter from the back :)
  5. With black Friday (BF) and Cyber Monday (CM) a few weeks away I'm starting to plan my holiday shopping. I thought it would be a good idea to share info on holiday bargains and where to find them. Here's what I currently have on my list. Online magazine subscriptions: discountmags.com usually has good deals for BF/CM E-books, music, movies, and apps: Playstore (Android), Appstore and iTunes (IOS) had good deals last year. Some offers as low as 50% from the original price. Amazon and the kindle store have a dedicated site for BF/CM: BF http://www.amazon.com/Black-Friday/b?node=384082011 CM http://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Monday/b?node=5550342011 Streaming subscriptions: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc. I'm probably not going to get a subscription as I'm happy with my Usenet setup but still worth checking out. Usenet providers: substantial discounts on CM last year. VPN providers: if you're going to get one then CM is your day. Software: Adobe photoshop /lightroom, Microsoft office, and most other software developers have good deals on CM. That's it for now. Feel free to add yours

    SIM CARDS

I can confirm the above. My number was suspended without a notice. No outgoing calls or data. A quick visit to the carrier's shop and it was reactivated. Surprisingly hassle free and efficient.
  8. http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/08/04/the-i-mobile-iq-ii-becomes-the-first-android-one-phone-in-thailand/ Looks like great value for money. I don't know what the build quality is like and how good the camera is but the specs are almost identical to the motorola moto g 2nd gen which is a very good phone. At $125 this should be on your short list if you're looking for a mid range phone with a decent screen size. The advantage of an Android One phone is that you will always get the latest android updates as soon as they become available and no bloatware.

    SIM CARDS

I read somewhere of a guy who asked a thai friend to register his number on her name. All she had to do was walk in a 7/11 and present her id. Sounds a bit strange that you can claim (register) a number without having the phone present but TIT so it could be true

    SIM CARDS

Jim, the deadline was extended until end of Aug. Provided your credit doesn't expire your number should be active at least until the end of Sep.
  11. Little Amy is off the market. She's still in Pattaya but has a boyfriend and quit Obessions
  12. Two birthday parties tonight: Neil's @La Bamba and Dave's (owner) @Kings bar
  13. If this (La Taverna del Passatore) is the one you were thinking of then in my opinion there are better choices around town. I've only been there once but it was very disappointing. The antipasti was a joke and the pasta was ok but nothing special. The service was friendly but they got our order wrong and we ended up with only two main dishes between three guys. the other thing was that they served us the pasta and the antipasti all at the same time which made no sense.

    Restaurants in Pattaya

Pattayanis – a Greek restaurant off soi Buakhao. I had dinner there with ET recently and the food was excellent. Low-Mid range in terms of pricing and friendly staff. The owner, Yanis, was playing the bouzouki and having a laugh with his greek friends. Probably discussing the Euro :) We had the Tzatziki with pita bread, a large greek salad and a couple of moussakas. The food was authentic and very good. Recommended.
  17. Think you got it wrong this time Trigg (happens to me all the time). Fah used to work as cashier at the house. She's of average height with typical straight thai hair and recently got her tits done. Ice used to work at Pussy bar. She's one of the taller lbs with dark skin, got frizzy hair, and no tits. As far as I can tell Ice is part of the core 69 crew atm and Fah was just testing the waters as a fl.
  18. I forgot to mention that you can and probably should use both Usenet and Torrents. I get most of my content from Usenet and only go to torrents when I can't find the file I'm looking for on Usenet. That's why I touched on retention in the first paragraph – old stuff and less popular content gets deleted from the servers once retention elapses
  19. Usenet dates back to the very early days of the internet. You can think of it as a bunch of bulletin boards where people post and share content. Back in the old days ISPs (internet service providers) used to have dedicated servers for storing and serving Usenet content and it was bundled with your internet access plan. As it grew bigger and more media files started getting posted and shared on Usenet it made sense to setup companies focusing solely on storing and serving this content as a paid service. As you can imagine with new fresh content (e.g. latest episodes of a tv series) being constantly uploaded and shared Usenet providers run out of storage. The way they tackle it is with “Retention”. Retention refers to the time a file will be stored on the provider's servers starting with the day it was originally posted /shared. The current standard is around 2000 days. This means that any file that was uploaded over 2000 days ago will potentially get deleted from the servers. Surprisingly Usenet providers have managed to circumvent anti-piracy takedowns and distant themselves from the content users post and share on their serves. The current status quo is that they will comply with specific DMCA requests but other than that they can keep running their servers pretty much uninterrupted. The benefits of subscribing with a Usenet service provider over using torents: 1. Speed: you're getting the file from a service provider so theoretically you should be able to use your entire bandwidth capacity for the download. With torrents you are getting the file (or a piece of it) from a peer-user who is just another end user like yourself with a home computer and limited upload bandwidth. 2. Anonymity: since your connected to your provider using SSL, theoretically no one knows what you're downloading and can't come after you for pirating media, games, software, etc. 3. Quality of service: since it's a paid service there is significantly less crap and malware on usenet compared to torrents (i.e viruses, incorrect tagging of files, etc.). If you want to get started with Usenet I suggest you read this article. It's old (2010) but covers all the basics. The user interface of SAB and other software tools mentioned in the article has since changed but you should be able to find youtube tutorials that will guide you through the configuration process. The other thing you should know is that the Usenet binary search site NZBMatrix covered in it has since closed shop, use NZBgeek.info (VIG indexer) instead or google for other alternatives. Still this is the one article I'd recommend you read before getting started.
  20. I went down the Usenet path. It costs me $120 annually (always renew around black fri /cyber mon.) and provides for a full cord cutting experience. I gave up my netflix and hulu subscriptions and get all my TV and movies from Usenet. I can try and collect a few relevant links on how to setup an internet pvr with Usenet, SabNZB+, and Couchpotato if anyone's interested.
  21. All still there afaik. From top left: Lilly, Fah, Bom, New, Melanie, Mai (pronounced my). It's pool night tonight. Starting at 10pm. It's usually a fun event with a good few bms and local pervs (residents). We're playing killer with 100baht entry (per round). Winner takes all. Playing or not, still a good opportunity to catch up with friends. I am not in any way affiliated with the bar or the owners so I'm not promoting just providing info
