Rom and Snoop did April, it was my turn in May. Prelude Due to Covid lockdowns and then some personal medical problems I had not traveled overseas since mid-2019. Finally at the end of March I could see my way clear to get a couple of weeks away in May between specialist’s appointments and set my sights on heading to Philippines once more. I checked out Qantas and Philippine Airlines prices but they were way up there so had a look at Cebu Pacific whom I have flown with internally in Philippines but not from Australia. Their headline price on a particular day was $A57 one way and I found one for $A280 return. Too good to be true... sure was... now add the fuel levy, some taxes, extra for luggage and seat selection which took the return trip to $A785. When allocating myself a seat I noticed up the from the first 12 or so rows cost an extra $A16 for each leg and knowing that although I am tight with money the Filipinos are worse so I booked an aisle seat in row 10. Flight paid… travel date May 2nd. I didn’t book any accommodation until late April which was a mistake as I was unable to get my preferred hotel in Manila and Angeles City at the right prices so had to find alternates. The plan for the trip was overnight in Manila, then 4 days in AC where I would make a decision of to where I would travel for the remaining 2 weeks. Before arriving in the Philippines, everyone has to complete an E-travel form (etravel.gov.ph) within 72 hours of departure. It is free, if a website asks for payment, you are not on the right site. Take a screen shot of the QR code and show it at customs after clearing immigration. If you want you can download the eGovPH app and have identity confirmed with copy of passport and selfie and then have access to the QR code plus all other online government services. Getting there, Fri May 2nd The big day arrives and as hoped for I have the row to myself. The front section of the plane almost deserted with the back half crammed in like sardines. Cebu Pacific is no frills; there is no screen or entertainment or wifi and one has to pay for food and drinks so I took my own snacks. They do have chargers for phones and devices with both USB A and C. 9.5 hours later, as we were the only plane landed at Terminal 3 at that time and immigration booths were all manned it was straight through immigration then show the QR code at customs. Some money changed at airport at a very poor rate but I had no peso from previous trips, then a 10–12-minute walk to my hotel. I was staying near the airport for the 1st night but those heading elsewhere you can follow the signs to the taxis, head to the Grab counter (turn right out of customs, go past the money changers to the end of the hallway toward parking levels) or head if taking bus direct to Angeles City head outside, turn right and go to Bay 13 and Genesis P2P bus stop is in middle island. I usually stay at the Belmont Hotel but their prices for that night were double the usual so I stayed at the Savoy 5 minutes further along. I have always used Agoda for my bookings and had compared prices with a couple of other sites but decided to stick with Agoda as prices were same or better and credit card details already held. Both hotels are across the tollway from the airport and there is a footbridge across (Runway Manila) linking the airport to hotels and casino. To access Runway Manila turn right once out of immigration/customs and follow signs for ‘Escalators to Departures’. Three sets of escalators lead onto the Runway. As it was only an overnight stay I stayed in the cheapest twin bed room which was average size with a small bathroom. The facilities are pretty good with restaurant and a pool on the 2nd floor. I couldn’t be bothered going out for the night so had a couple of beers by the pool (at double normal bar prices) before hitting the sack. I had not included breakfast in the booking but had their breakfast in the lobby bar which again was overpriced opting for the scrambled eggs. There was no bacon but pastries, fruit coffee and toast and a hint of lettuce, tomato & mushroom, ₱450.
