pdogg
When using an ATM overseas there are various fees. Your home bank may charge a fee. Visa or Mastercard may charge a fee. And the local bank may charge a fee. ATM's in Cambodia dispense US dollars and you can use dollars instaed of riel at 4000 riel to the dollar if you wish. Right now the moneychangers by the markets are giving 4062 riels per dollar which while better than 4000 isn't that significant since if something is priced in dollars you should pay in dollars (mostly) and there won't be that many places you're going that is priced in riel. Last year when I could get 4250 riels per dollar, the difference was significant and I tried to use riel whenever possible. The good news for Americans, those Americans who come from the USA, not the Canucks, is that you may avoid foreign exchange fees on your ATM transactions. To avoid local fees use Canadia Bank ATMs much as wily expats use Aeon ATMs in Thailand. No local fee I'm told.
deepthroat
Great info PD. Sadly, I've crossed that invisible line - I've watched so much porn, when I read your thread title I assumed "ATM" stood for "Ass To Mouth". Just another sign I'm officially a debauched old pervert. dixon cox
Regarding the Riel vs. US Dollar: As far as dual currencies go they work well together and you can almost consider the Riel as just the small change regardless of what the actual bank rate is. Everywhere (99% of places you're likely to visit) use 4000R to the dollar. Unless you're eating in more expensive places ($10+ per head) then $20 bills may be frowned upon as they're considered large and cause the staff to go elsewhere for additional change. So try to keep small dollar bills at hand, especially ones and fives and a selection of Riel. 100r notes are pretty much a waste of time, even the beggars turn their noses up at them. You will commonly receive your change in a mixture of both Riel and US$ and tills in minimarts and restaurants commonly show the due amounts and change amounts in both Riel and US$ currencies. Riel notes consist of: 100r = $0.02 500r = $0.12 1,000r = $0.25 2,000r = $0.50 5,000r = $1.25 10,000r = $2.50 20,000r = $5.00 :excl: Be careful with the 1,000 Riel and 10,000 Riel notes, as they do look rather similar!

rxpharm
Some general advice when using ATMs in any country, including home. Skimming (capturing the information in the magnetic card stripe) cards is becoming a more frequent scam. To minimize this watch out for the following when using an ATM, does the card slot seem to protrude out further than normal? It should be close to flush with the face of the ATM. Most modern ATMs feature a flashing green light around the card slot, if this is missing be suspicious, as a card skimmer may have been installed over top the card slot. Always obscure any views while you are entering your PIN. Don't use the ATM when any suspicious looking people are nearby.
