pdogg
The farmers plan to camp at the airport in a move to pressure the caretaker government into paying them their long-overdue money under the rice-pledging scheme. A caravan of 700 farm trucks carrying 5,000 rice growers stopped over at Bang Pa-in district of Ayutthaya yesterday to spend the night. They are expected to reach Suvarnabhumi this afternoon. The farmers are mainly from Uthai Thani province, as well as from Chai Nat and Nakhon Sawan. Kamnan Manus Chamnanketkorn, tambon chief of Pradoo Yeun in Lom Sak district in Uthai Thani, said all farmers in eight districts in the province decided to travel to Suvarnabhumi airport, hoping to make their voices heard by the government. He insisted the farmers have no intention of seizing the international airport, but admitted that passengers might have some difficulty getting there. “We will absolutely not block the runways. But some of us might stay on the road to the airport. “We have no intention of disturbing passengers or destroying the country’s image. But our problem is too tough to bear,” he said. He said his group might continue to stay at the airport if the government could not tell them exactly when they will get their money. - See more at: http://www.thephuketnews.com/farmers-to-descend-on-airport-44722.php Quote Link to comment

rxpharm
pdogg, these aren't Isaan rice farmers - these are ones from the central and slightly north central provinces. Uthai Thani is about 2.5 hrs north of Bkk by car. Quote Link to comment

mikibyne
Looks like this group of farmers got duped by their 'leader', ex-Chart Pattana MP Chada coincidentally a close ally of the government. But hey nevermind, they've been promised their money by next week Quote Link to comment
Trenton42
It'll be interesting to see what happens when next week comes and goes, and the farmers are *still* not paid. Quote Link to comment
