pdogg
Purpose of this thread is to try to suss out which movies will appeal to both falangs and Thai ladyboys. Saw The Adjustment Bureau the other night. Theme is free will vs predermination with a good performance by Matt Damon. Lots of great New York City shots which is a huge plus for me but won't carry over to the general public. My teerak fell asleep. One thumb up. :thumbsu: :thumbsd: A special bonus is a brief cameo by Betty Liu perhaps the sexiest Asian American alive. I'd love to be under her desk mucnching the carpet while she's talking about financial markets. Quote Link to comment
SiamSam
I saw the Adjustment Bureau also and although I am a fan of Philip K. Dick the movie was just so-so for me. I am waiting for Lefty's review which I assume will be forthcoming soon. My teerak enjoys action movies the most. She liked the Green Hornet a lot. She also enjoyed Alice in Wonderland and Yogi Bear however part of the appeal was seeing them in 3D Imax. I like taking her to movies she gets bored with because then she occupies her time by playing with Little Elvis. Quote Link to comment
duke007
I watched the last two Bond films in the LOS, as some people know Im a big 007 fan so was being Selfish here. Also saw Sherlock Holmes albiet the last 20 minutes when I fell asleep and started snoring loudly (according to the teerak) Of course I blamed her for this discretion as we had spent 2 hours beforehand shopping and it made me tired , could have been the V.I.P. Couch like seats I had booked though The last film I saw was The Loser's which both myself and the teerak enjoyed, I think a follw up up will happen for sure I do give the teerak the choice of which Film to see but they invariably will say "Up to You" I will like too (with Thai subtitles) I have been to see a couple of Thai Comedy Film's in the past, and the teerak has loved it and appreciated me very much for going out of my way to see it with her even if I havent a clue what they are saying or is happening. No big chore or deal really, its great to see them happy, laughing and having a good time Quote Link to comment
Trenton42
Seeing Thai movies can be fun, but subtitles sure help one to understand what's going on. Quote Link to comment
pacman
I have just been to see Source Code, a new Sci-Fi film directed by Duncan Jones. I only mention the director because he's David Bowie's boy & he has done his old man proud with this effort. I only go to see science fiction movies when they come recommended & I did like Inception last year. I went to see it with Chinaman in Pattaya actually, not my preferred date but one of my favourite FMs. But not to be distracted, I watched Source Code & enjoyed it far more than Inception. It has a well explained plot that moves at a good pace, it doesn't get bogged down with sentimental nonsense, it isn't predictable & has a satisfactory ending. Almost a surprise ending but now I sit & write this, no, it was definitely predictable. You will need to see it to understand but this is a heads-up for anyone who likes a good story to consider the price of a ticket. It may go over the head of your average LB but many of them are as sharp as tacks. I wouldn't hesitate to invite one or several of them. There's lots to like about this film, especially a very good performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. He is excellent as are the rest of the cast. As good a movie as I have seen in ages. YMMV but I am prepared to recommend it. Quote Link to comment
SiamSam
I too screened SOURCE CODE and agree with Paccie. Enjoyable and entertaining with well placed tension throughout. I didn't quite get the ending but I am perhaps one of LB types where things easily go over my head. Recently I saw CONSPIRATOR directed by Robert Redford. The story is a period piece centered about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Wonderful movie to look at. The cinematography is stunningly outstanding. Wardrobe too is remarkable as well as the overall art direction. Satisfying way to spend 2 hours. Oh and the popcorn was just right. I'm watching more conventional cinema now that I have lost the TLF porn LB Tubes. Quote Link to comment
Chinaman
Had to check this thread out as PD just told me that Pacman had mentioned me. Really, we saw this one together, Paccie? I kind of liked Inception but was very, very disappointed by The Green Hornet which I saw when in Patts earlier this year in Feb. I wanted to see it because of my fellow countryman playing one of the lead roles. Still, didn't live up to my expectations at all. I think I am more and more inclining to European cinema. Saw "United" on my iPad recently and considered it well done despite the screen being a bit small though. I do like the comfort and the low prices of the movie theatres in Thailand, I have to say. Cheers Pacman, your memory is better than mine ;-) Quote Link to comment
Lefty
My grandest movie experience was taking the incomparable Sonya to see Inglourious Basterds. I kind of thought it may end up being boring to her, but she stay glued to the screen all the while and was even laughing at some of the subtle humor that would be over the head of 99.9% of Thais. Afterwards she said she really enjoyed it. That impressed me even more about her. Definitely not your typical lb. Quote Link to comment
pacman
Really, we saw this one together, Paccie? I had to pause & remember now that you ask. I only went to a couple of movies while in Pattaya last year. I know we went to one film & I know you didn't come to see the other one. Ipso facto, we must have seen Inception together. I think I am more and more inclining to European cinema. Me too. I have been a fan of Art House films & European cinema as long as I can remember. Everytime I see a big Hollywood production, I am reminded how lame they are. Most of them are patronising, utterly predictable & written to impress the sensibilities of the average 13 year old. Source Code is set in Chicago, is an American production & is thoroughly entertaining. It reminds me that they can do it if they let the director make the film they want to & not the one the accountants want them to. Cheers Pacman, your memory is better than mine ;-) I should hope so, I have less to remember... Quote Link to comment
HubbaBubba
I just came back from The Priest and enjoyed it. It is very sifi but my girl loves vampire movies so I knew we would both enjoy it. I have seen many soap operas in Thailand that have Vap characters. For those that like that stuff, this movie is fun! Quote Link to comment
