You can wear shorts.

I think guys dress a bit sharper in Bangkok than in Pattaya but you can wear whatever you want.

Like @Pdoggg says, shorts are no problem in ladyboy bars. But if you want to go clubbing afterwards, you'll have a problem. For example Levels in Soi 11 doesn't allow shorts or sleeveless shirts

The only place in Thailand where I encountered a dress code was the temple near the Grand Palace. A police officer stopped me and ordered me to wear long trousers. Going back to Sukhumvit would have taken too long, so I bought a pair of loose, pajama-style pants, usually worn by hippie ladies, from a nearby market and returned. The officer praised me for complying, but I felt embarrassed and almost exposed in such lightweight clothing.

While I would love to go clubbing because I know some of the girls/LBs like to do so, I think I have passed that point in my life. I can't hear anything in clubs.

Thanks all for the updates. I had read at some places in NEP that shorts weren't allowed. While I have been to CIM & Cindy's in years past and Billboards, I am anticipating HOT weather in 2 weeks and not sure if I can survive in jeans/trousers even at night.
