I didn't know Rinzler/Studley, but I remember vaguely that he was partly responsible for me joining lbr. There was some spat on Py (I can't remember what that was about) and BM Paultain, also now sadly deceased, led a walkout to lbr. I gather Rinzler/Studley was diabetic and suspected at the time of his death that it might have been due to his being unable to afford insulin which is ludicrously expensive in the US and even if you have health insurance it can run out. RIP Rinzler/Studley

I've just been watching a BBC program, one of a series of presenter Simon Reeves travelling through the US. Episode 3 is about California. He meets a couple of volunteer medics who help the homeless in LA. They said LA has more than 45,000 homeless people. More than the next 27 US cities together, New York has 2,500 homeless. I guess it's because it's warmer in LA so easier to be on the streets, temperature wise anyway.

I think computer algorithms can identify if their is interest in particular flights and alter prices up or down, but whether it is just done on people checking out the prices or actual bookings isn't clear. I checked prices for flights next Jan/Feb yesterday, and they are the same today.

Teya asked me if I wanted to see her pic in a bikini on Koh Larn. I said I had already seen it. She said 'how you see it?' - I said you had copied it from her Facebook page to forum. She said you had to pay her for using her pic, I said she had to pay you for using your pics of her on Thaifriendly!

I keep price alerts on Kayak and Skyscanner, but book direct with the airlines when I see a good price. The 'bucket shop' agency prices might be a bit lower but you can't usually chose your seat, the agency seats are generally allocated at the rear of the plane. You can't change your booking if necessary, and you don't get the ponts if you have loyalty reward membership.

What's more concerning for me is that passengers departing are also being screened. I almost booked my flights for next Jan/Feb yesterday. The price for direct flights with BA and Thai Airways are at £530-535. Usually around £6-800 at this time. But I've read that departing passengers are also being checked and taken away for further checks if they have high temperatures. I'll leave my flight booking for now, the prices might fall more. And I hope that the coronavirus scare might have died down by next year. But I think low season in los is going to be really bad this year.

I've flown from London with Etihad, Emirates and Qatar. I thought Qatar was the best, most comfortable seats and shortest stopover, only one hour. Actually on second time I used them it was only a few minutes. The flight from London was late getting in and we had to run through the terminal to get to connecting flight to Bangkok which was held until we boarded. Also the second leg from Doha was fairly empty so I got a row of seats to myself. These days I prefer direct flights taking only 11-12 hours and go with Eva, Thai Airways or BA whichever is cheapest - usually Eva.
