  1. 55555555... That's a hell of a lot of money to be keeping in a 200 Baht per night guest house, that doesn't even have room safes. So, I really don't think that this story ought to be taken too seriously, folks. However, it's well known for short time rooms, & muggings & robberies do take place at the Thailand Guesthouse. In fact, a couple of years back I had to physically go into a bar & pull out a skanky, 6' something kathoey who'd stolen some money & a camera from a really good old friend of mine in there.... ...And he happens to be a half blind, seventy two year old, Vietnam war veteran... So, the wheelchair bit definitely fits. Fucking cowards, they really know how to pick their victims. And by the way, they'll always say that the altercation was over a dispute regarding non or only partial payment for services provided... Then guess what, voilà!!! That's them off the hook with everyone (including the ladyboy sycophants, firmly behind them)!

  2. This unfortunate story only reiterates the mantra: never invest more than you are prepared to walk away from. Rent in Thailand. Never buy.

  5. Thanks for the tips Sylvester on the road check as I'm up that way in early October. I usually rent a scooter for daytime use. I have only seen the blocks in that same area at night time, so I refrained from driving in the evening. Funny how you mention the officer's disappointment when you produced the correct ID's. I got that same look of disappointment in Phuket when he handed it back to me. They got me the first time going to the South beaches and I didn't want to take my wallet. They had a big line of farangs paying fines for no helmuts and ID's. Meanwhile Thai's were zooming by without helmets..

  7. Just got back home from Kuala Lumpur. I had a great time there. I love the place and the people. Most of the locals seemed to be of Indian descent and when I got there, I was afraid since it's a muslim country and they may not appreciate transgenderism but I was surprised when they were all nice to me and I have never experienced being mocked or ridiculed at all! I got stalked by 7 guys (yes I kept count of it). It was creepy since one of them even followed me until I reached my hotel! But I was told they just are into ladyboys and aren't harmful (LOL) because they will just look at u but do nothing which was to me was fine. I just got creeped out that this could really happen to me cuz I never have experienced that before. I spoke to some foreigners too in Bukit Bintang where I had some drinks. Spoke to a French-Algerian chef and a Norwegian architect (they looked so awesome. Didn't flirt since Im in a relationship -- I wanted though hahaha) and they both thought that I am working there in that bar. I said I'm a tourist too and just having fun and they were surprised that not all ladyboys are sexworkers. But they told me that in a very nice way which i didnt take offensively. They met ladyboys before and they were all sex workers according to them. I went to little india and tried ultra super mega overly tremendously immensely spicy food goddamn it I swear I was soaked in my own sweat after having a bite! I also had stewed frogs in Chinatown and had some time visiting temples and mosques. Overall, i love Malaysia. I love the convenience of the train station, the laidback life, the food (damn I ate a lot! I didnt know I can be that voracious haha) the people and the architectural structures they have are all marvelous!

  8. Thought I'd share my recent experiences with police traffic stops in Chiang Mai. I have been stopped three times on my rented scooter in the last 8 days on the moat road surrounding the old city of Chiang Mai. The police were professional and courteous during two of the stops. All three stops also occurred at strategically placed check points on the moat road, where 6 to 8 officers were waving every driver (Thai and non-Thai) on a scooter or motorcycle over to check licenses. I had to pay a 200 bt fine the first time I was stopped because I did not have my id. I told the police officer I forgot my id, apologized politely, and asked if I could "pay a fine". He agreed and politely explained the legal requirement to carry a driver's license when operating a scooter. He directed me to a table to pay the 200 bt fine. I was given a receipt, with the issuing officer's name on it. The second time I was pulled over, I had photocopies of my passport and international driver permit with me, issued in the US. This particular officer came across as disappointed when I produced my license, like he lost out on a few baht. He did not accept the photocopy at first, saying I needed the actual license. Fortunately, Brother Lung, who lives in Chiang Mai, advised me that I should carry only a photocopy of my driver license/permit because of the danger of having a wayward cop hold it hostage. Brother Lung also advised me to invoke the word "embassy" to respond to police who question a photocopy--"US embassy tell me to carry only photocopy." It worked like a charm, too. The officer somewhat grudgingly handed me back my papers and sent me on my way without a fine. The officer who stopped me the third time was very professional and courteous, but he did say something about the photocopy of my license. I again responded with, "US embassy tell me to carry only photocopy." He handed me back my papers, bowed politely, and sent me on my way. EDIT: Neglected to mention that I was wearing a helmet when stopped. I have read that Thai police will ding you for not wearing a helmet while riding a scooter. Don't know how true this is because every other person I see riding a scooter around Chiang Mai does not wear a helmet.

  9. Fresh from my shower, I stand in front of the mirror complaining to my husband that my breasts are too small. Instead of characteristically telling me it's not so, he uncharacteristically comes up with a suggestion. If you want your breasts to grow, then every day take a piece of toilet paper and rub it between them for a few seconds'. Willing to try anything, I fetch a piece of toilet paper and stand in front of the mirror, rubbing it between my breasts. 'How long will this take?' I asked. They will grow larger over a period of years,' my husband replies. I stopped. 'Do you really think rubbing a piece of toilet paper between my breasts every day will make my breasts larger over the years?' Without missing a beat he says, 'Worked for your ass, didn't it?

  10. I used to enjoy the content feeling around now of heading away come October as I watched the days shorten and get colder as the year faded. Always a great buzz knowing I wouldn't have to endure many freezing winter nights. Even knowing I'll be back some day gets me a bit excited every so often.

  12. generally speaking philipino food is imminently forgettable with the 'local favorites' not really my cup of tea, but...i can recommend a few spots -- Mama's fish house on Diniwid Beach, Boracay; Banana Leaf at greenbelt, makati (not all franchises of that limited 'chain' are the same); most any Mang Inasal most anywhere; Señor Pedro take-out chicken (opposite Harold's Hotel in Cebu--amongst many other spots). to name a few. enjoy.
