pdogg
Dongtan Beach is the beach of choice for several FMs. I don't think the reason is because of the wee mincers floating around. Rather, it's quiet and pleasant, since it's not on Jomtien Beach Road but rather more of a yellow brick road. Maybe this is why for years it appealed to friends of Dorothy as well as Russians. In recent years, the Beach Concessions have now been providing wifi which is certainly handy. So here's a thread for all things Dongtan. In the article in the next post it seems due to increased competition the price of a massage has dropped from 300 baht to 200 baht.
pdogg
According to the article prices have dropped from 300 baht to 200 baht for massages. Dongtan Beach masseuses call on Pattaya officials to crack down on foreign workersAlready struggling with increased competition and decreased tourist numbers, Dongtan Beach masseuses say illegal foreign workers are imperiling their incomes. At the June 30 meeting of the Thai Masseuse Club, President Manee Kerdruang told Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and officials from the city’s Peace Maintenance and Public Health departments that members want City Hall to do more to protect them, as they pay annual fees to work, submit to drug tests and adhere to programs, such as the current “Pattaya White” project. As part of the program, aimed at reducing drug use and creating harmony in the city, the 200-plus masseuses attending the meeting again took drug tests and pledged to uphold Thai traditions.Registered beach masseuses must have a home registered in Banglamung District, a license from a massage school, must cooperate with Pattaya activities and be a member of a beach-massage club, which enforces such things as uniforms and registration numbers.Manee complained, however, that foreigners were working on Dongtan Beach even though they have not paid membership fees of 500-2,000 baht, have not had formal training and often engage in drugs and prostitution.Member Sopha Ajvichai said some of those claiming to be masseuses really are foreign tourists or vendors trying to get people to buy expensive items or illegally trade foreign currency. The scams, she said, damage the image of honest, hard-working masseuses.Pattaya, Sopha said, has done little to combat the influx of foreign scammers and competitors and she called on Itthiphol to do more.Theerasuk Jatupong, head of the Peace Maintenance Department, vowed to conduct serious inspections and arrest any foreigners found working illegally in the kingdom.Maream Bilsalem, 50, hopes the city follows through. She said Dongtan Beach has long enjoyed a steady stream of sun worshippers thanks to its relatively secluded surroundings. Masseuses used to be able to earn 800-1,000 baht a day but, now, prices have fallen from 200 to 300 baht due to increased competition. Meanwhile, the number of tourists visiting the beach has fallen, seriously impacting her income.http://www.pattayamail.com/localnews/dongtan-beach-masseuses-call-on-pattaya-officials-to-crack-down-on-foreign-workers-39353

Kahuna
I truly enjoyed Dongtan beach...and wanta thank PD for showing me the way years back... Great afternoon spot to sit and enjoy a cold beer and some tasty Thai food... No real great juicy stories, but one afternoon sitting and enjoying one of the wandering porno DVD vendors stopped in front of me...Stupidly I asked him if he had any ladyboy DVDs...He dropped his satchel and started digging around in it...Presently he displayed a straight sex DVD...He proudly pointed to the girl and then to the boy in the cover photo and proclaimed "...see lady boy, lady boy"...I had the distinct feeling that like myself, Thai was not his first language..........

bumblebee
In low season with all the beach chairs put away it can look almost Phuket-ish.
bumblebee
Still fairly quiet over on Dongtan. Personally I prefer it that way, makes it seem somehow more remote.

bumblebee
Wow it sure is quiet BB. Where are all those husky Ruskies? Still at home with their huskies perhaps. It will be interesting to see if they arrive in the same numbers as they did last year.
pdogg
Breaking News As we speak the Army is at Dongtan Beach. Some of the concessioners have been told to shut down and others have been told to scale back their operations from 8 rows of chairs to 4 rows. Will see how this plays out.
bumblebee
This will really mess up their predicted profits with us on the cusp of the busiest time of the year. Some of those places were practically empty back in June and this is the last thing they need.

bumblebee
Seems to be business as usual but I have noticed a couple of gaps where there used to be chairs. One opposite Soi 5 and the other near Pattaya Park.
pdogg
It took a while, but high season finally arrived at Jomtien-area beaches, with Jomtien, Yim Yom and Dongtan beaches swarming. Tourists, mostly European, filled beach chairs and the empty sand between them beginning Dec. 23. The water is a bit chilly for Thais, but perfect for those from colder climates. Vendors said, so far, high season has not been good as last year, but the number of tourists has increased in recent days. How long this “high season” will last, they couldn’t guess. While most the sun lovers were European, the number of Russians among them were way down from last year due to the crashing value of the ruble. Pattaya officials hope to draw eight million tourists this year, both foreigners in town for the Christmas and New Year holidays, and Bangkok Thais who have been given official legal holidays from Dec. 28-Jan. 2. http://www.pattayamail.com/localnews/tourists-finally-arrive-on-jomtien-beaches-44003
Pdoggg
Don't think this affects Dongtan Beach. But Jomtien Beach Road will be looking more sterile but will probably slow down beach erosion. Contractors have completed about 20 percent of the work to redevelop Jomtien Beach, but have removed a number of trees to the consternation of local residents. The project begun in March aims to give the Jomtien beachfront a similar look to Pattaya Beach, with its wide promenade and public areas. Work covers 40,000 sq. meters from Yin Yom Beach to the Soi Chaiyapruek-Jomtien Beach Road intersection, a distance of four kilometers. So far, many large trees have been removed, prompting widespread grumbling and online criticism of the city. The city, however, is urging patience, noting new trees will be planted eventually. Workers have started to lay sidewalk tiles after retouching the landscape and leveling the height to connect to the road. Work currently is focused on the 10,000 sq. meters surrounding the Dongtan Curve. Over the years, Jomtien Beach has been heavily affected by rain, floods and erosion. City Hall inked a 270-million-baht contract with Nong Nooch Land and Garden Design Co. to renovate the beachfront to not only look better and offer more facilities, but better protect it from the elements. Suntorn Sompramai, director of construction control for the Pattaya Engineering Department, said various meetings have been held to discuss future plans for the facelift. The project is slated for completion in 2017. http://www.pattayamail.com/news/jomtien-beach-facelift-20-complete-50846
