People across the country were unable to pay at shops after credit and debit cards were declined. The glitches hit on “Cyber Monday”, when online shoppers were predicted to spend £500m, more than four times the daily average. RBS, which owns NatWest, said it had been hit by “technical issues” and apologised to customers, who were also unable to use online banking or mobile phone apps. In a statement last night RBS promised to “put right” any financial losses suffered. “We are aware of the technical issues being experienced by customers and are working to get them fixed urgently. We apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused,” the lender, 81pc owned by the taxpayer, said. It is the third time this year the bank, which has 24m customers across the UK, has suffered technical glitches. The problems begun around 6.30pm yesterday and soon triggered a wave of angry messages on social media sites as customers took out their frustration online. "Can't believe I stuck with NatWest after last year's blackout! So embarrassing having card declined after filling up at petrol station," one customer wrote on Twitter. "Card declined, online banking down, 12 mins on an 0845 number with no answer. I'll be saying bye to NatWest v soon," tweeted another. Other people described how they were caught unable to pay for meals in restaurants and had plans their plans for early Christmas shopping scuppered by the glitches. RBS Group had 24 million customers across the UK in 2012, though it is unclear how many were affected by last night's problems. Earlier this year the company was forced to apologise twice in the space of two months after customers were unable to check their accounts through the mobile phone app. The second of those glitches came after the company axed 1,400 retail jobs in favour of investment in "things that matter most to customers" like online and mobile services. In 2012 the bank racked up a £175-million bill in costs and compensation after an IT fiasco saw payments and wages appear to go missing. Last night an RBS spokeswoman said the company was "very sorry" for those affected by the system issues, adding that customers were reporting the system was back online later that evening. "If customers have been left out of pocket as a result of these system problems, we will put this right," he said.
