duke007 Posted March 22, 2016 Share Posted March 22, 2016 Passengers Flee Two Blasts At Brussels Airport At least one person has been killed and several injured after two explosions ripped through Zaventem Airport in Brussels. Shots were fired and Arabic shouted before the blasts, according to Belgian news agency Belga. Explosions At Brussels Airport: Live Updates Video and images on social media showed smoke rising from an airport building and shattered windows. Confused and shocked passengers fled the terminal to safety as they were evacuated by armed police. Footage also showed ceiling tiles littered across the floor and strewn black luggage belts, cases and bags at a check-in desk. According to reports the suspected terror attack centred on an American Airlines desk in a departure hall at around 8am. Airport spokeswoman Anke Fransen said: "There were two blasts in the departure hall. First aid team are in place for help." A police official added: "One person has died and perhaps there are several more." The attack comes as the Belgian capital is on high alert following the dramatic arrest of Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam in the city last Friday. Sky's Alex Rossi, at the scene, said: "I was in the duty free in Zaventem Airport and I heard two very, very loud explosions. "I could feel the building move. There was also dust and smoke as well. "I went towards where the explosion came from and there were people coming out looking very dazed and shocked. "The thinking here is that it is some kind of terrorist attack although that hasn't been verified by any of the authorities here at the airport. "Don't know how the explosion took place, the method if you like. But it certainly seems Brussels airport has been targeted in a terrorist attack. 1/10 "We are all being moved out of the airport now towards the emergency exit. "There is a great deal of confusion here. Certainly there are a number of very upset, as you might imagine, very frightened people." He added: "There are fears that there might be other attackers." The Terminal was evacuated after the blasts went off near to an American Airlines departure desk. Belgian media is also reporting there were gunshots before the explosions and Arabic was shouted beforehand. The RTBF broadcaster said the pair were known to police. A third man pictured with them at the airport is still being sought. Twin explosions at the airport and another at a metro station on Tuesday left about 34 dead and 250 wounded. Belgium is observing three days of national mourning. RTBF said the brothers were known to police and had criminal records but were not until now linked to any terrorist activity. The broadcaster said that Khalid el-Bakraoui had used a false name to rent the flat in the Forest area of the Belgian capital where police killed a gunman in a shootout last week. It was during that raid that police found a fingerprint of Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in the Paris terror attacks of 13 November. He was arrested in a raid last Friday. Quote Link to comment
