DownLoLarry
THAILAND: -- The US embassy in Bangkok is calling for all Americans in Thailand to register with its Consular Section so it can better provide assistance to US citizens.Tim Swanson, Chief of US Embassy Bangkok’s American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit, told the Phuket Gazette, “If you are an American citizen in Thailand – either as a long-term resident or a visiting tourist – please consider enrolling with the US Embassy’s Consular Section via the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program [sTEP]. “Using this system, you can enter information about your trip abroad so that the Department of State can better assist you in the event of an emergency,” he said. The range of emergency services offered by the ACS Unit includes assistance regarding arrests, missing persons, medical emergencies, death, crime and lost or stolen passports, he explained. “STEP is a free service provided by the Department of State to US citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. It also allows Americans residing abroad to get routine information from the nearest US Embassy or consulate,” said Mr Swanson. “You can enroll online in a few minutes at travelregistration.state.gov . After you’ve enrolled, you can use STEP to enter and update your contact information at any time, allowing you to keep your travel and contact information current. “The data you provide is secured behind Department of State firewalls, accessed only by cleared personnel in embassies, consulates and the Department of State, and releasable only under the provisions of the Privacy Act. Enrollment is for American citizens only,” Mr Swanson said. pdogg
Lots of posts on a another forum echoing your sentiments AB. But my experiences with the US Embassy both in Bangers and Phnom Penh have been extremely positive. Who knows what their motives are though. Btw, if Americans have 10K USD in foreign accounts at any point of the year then a special formneeds to be filed with the Treasury Department by June 30th of the following year. The 10K limit is too low IMHO and is just a hassle as the tax on the interest of 10K is minimal. A 100K limit would be more paper reduction friendly. rxpharm
Registering with your embassy while working or retired in a foreign country is a very good idea. If something happened like civil unrest or natural disaster you may be able to be evacuated should it be necessary.
EyeMahk
it is just the MAN on a power trip .. what next tracking devices implanted in are skin..lol If you want to see what records CBP has on your entries and exits from the USA, you can fill out this form and send it in. Include a copy of your passport (they know that info anyway). Depending on how much you travel, you will get a short or long report. It is a dump of their computer records that shows every flight number out and in for many years past, and any notes that agents made upon your entry (if there was a secondary search). http://www.ice.gov/doclib/about/pdf/affirmation-declaration.pdf Everyone I know who has sent this in has received a report.
