What Do You Like About Pattaya

Cause I could wear a tuxedo with flip-flops and no one would give me a second glance...

Daddy Cool :flirt2:

My latest wheeze is instead of ignoring the suit salesmen now when they approach me I pick out the most hideous suit in the window - usually some double breasted two tone sparkly bad boy , ask them could they make it in my size , the answer is of course an excited "Oh yes sir !"

I then tell them I'm just nipping off to get some money and I'll be back in ten mins to get measured up .

Here is a friend of Sam's in his Canadian Tux. Or did you have something like this red velvet number in mind?

I must confess that I am partial to Sam's friend in the North of the Border Tux-edo...I particularly like his shoes...You think they may have had spikes on their soles at some time in their life...

Earlier today some friends from California sent me a text asking if I would buy them some PowerBall tickets...They said that they would share the loot with me if they won...I failed to find the sense or logic in that, but they are good friends so I went out and bought 3 tickets...One for each of them and one for myself....figuring that if one of the tickets won anything that's the one that would be mine...Thankfully we all lost and they remain my poor friends and I theirs...

But on my return to my home I wandered into Walmart to pick up a thing or two and as I was meandering down one of the aisles this really big dude approached me...He was wearing khaki cotton pants and a blue Walmart employee shirt...but on his rather large feet he was sporting a brand new pair of the brightest red joggers I have ever seen...

As we approached one another...Two thoughts flashed through my mind...Either this guy really like bright red shoes and wanted the World to see his beauftiful new red shoes or he was color blind and his Walmart friends told him that they were black...

Either way I thought something had to be said...So as he approached I said, "Those are some really cool red shoes." He never said a word, but looked at me as if I were an alien...I stopped and turned and stared after him, but he just walked on...But I noticed some redness to his neck and face...I appears that his face was making an effort to match his new shoes...

Clearly the lesson learned...You can't wear khakis and a blue t-shirt with red shoes in Walmart and not get noticed by some old fool like myself....Pattaya???? Now that's a different story of another color...

An interesting thread about why people like or dislike Thailand and or Pattaya.

Patience please and aplogies to those who have no idea of what I am talking about - I am getting old!

In the 1950's and 60's in the UK there was/were:

* Loads of small Mum & Pop shops to buy daily needs and soft drinks and sweets

* Loads of open fresh produce markets

* Specialist shops - Bakers, Butchers, Fishmongers who knew their produce

* Seasonal produce - just like a free market

* Things not wrapped in cellophane/saranwrap

* No plastic bags

* No recycling bins - kids collected soda bottles and reclaimed the deposits for another 'free' soda

* Wash days for laundry and kids helped clean the family car

* Kids had chores to do - earned their pocket money/allowance

* Lack of petty rules and regulations - we knew a coffee was hot.

* We knew the pavement/sidewalk was uneven. We saw a hole in the ground!

* We knew a car was parked there. We knew not to park in front of a driveway

* People taking their own responsbility

* Things going on in the Streets - Carnaby Street in London

* Opportunities as minors to safely cycle our bikes up to 10 miles away and knew how to fix a puncture

* Away days, on our own, up to London armed with only enough for fares and food and some saved spending money

* Walks or bicyles to school - no car ride and less congestion

* School uniforms were regulated so all kids, rich and poor, looked the same

* People worked even in menial low paid jobs and did not feel entitled to unpaid benefit

* Dividends were paid on shares- the share value reflected a company's profit not some speculators inflated valuation

* Respect for elders and authority - police, teachers etc

* No need to have a sign reserving a seat for a disabled person/pregnant woman - you gave up your seat - if they were there.

* People smiled.

It suddenly dawned on me that most of that is still true of Thailand - I am not speaking of Pattaya, nor major cities, but of the real Thailand.

Maybe, just maybe, that is why I like it here.

Ahh, the good old days... :sign0200:

Back when we didn't need to lock doors & kids played outside till late without anyone worrying. It was a simpler time & rural Thailand is still like that. The social inequities & the lack of equal justice don't make the place perfect but it is nice to be reminded that not everywhere has succumbed to "modern life".

* People smiled.

It's not called the Land of Smiles for nothing. It's still one of the most charming things about any visit to Thailand... the people always give you a smile. Do they put something in the water?
