    Obituaries

Death yesterday of English Folk Blues Guitarist John Renbourne. He formed the band "Pentangle" with Bert Jansch who died in 2011. Saw 'em all many times.
  5. Michael Caine in "Get Carter" - "in a thin glass" !
  6. Sadly the "Coolest/Best Fictional Bar" doesn't exist. = or does it. ? It's George Orwells " Moon Under Water'."
  7. Not seen Poppy for a long time. She left Ma Mak - couldn't get on with owner (oldish LB Aneu) - Family still own the bar but have leased it off. Packed on opening party night and empty ever since. A few bars are charging 70 for usual Thai Lollywatter. (Tick Bar, Cassandras, Garry Bar (A few LB's drink here). Despite only one LB my favourite is the Corner House with low key music and a superb breeze blowing off the road when sat overlooking it. Gets noisy Sat/Sunday when they have the football on the telly.
  8. Yes - at the moment.! Apart from Mint Bar and a couple in Buddy Bar - both close together near the front. Of course "Jam" in The Corner House - 150 LDrink and 500 BF - plus she asked a chum of mine for 3,000 - maybe 2,000 Short time. HoHoHo
  9. Meanwhile back in the Rompho market the LB's have moved around. New owner of Naughty Girls Bar at the top - got rid of the guitar duo who were a bit better than the other musical (?) acts in the bars. 3 LB's in there including June (pictured) late of Zero Bar. Tick Bar has 2 LB's including "Luk/Nook" pictured somewhere on this posting. Across from Tick Bar is Ma Mak Bar with 2 chunky LB's. Plus as mentioned Mint Bar with a few LB's who require a ladydrink at 150 Baht and a 500 Baht Barfine.
  10. Only 2 girls "Pooi" and "Mong" at the Roadhouse about 6 LB's - on and off.
  11. I know sod all about football - but Heart of Midlothian ?? actually a novel. Sir Walter Scott.
  12. This is The Garry Bar. Resident LB is Lucy a friend of my LBGF who also was there. I stayed away from the Birthday Bash. Too much 'Shish' about. Quite a few LB's call in here regularly. Jen Freelancing. Pic of Jen and Lucy taken about a month ago
  13. Don't "know" her - but she is quite cute. Name is 'Mya' rhymes with beer. Short shoulder length Bob Cut hair. English not that bad - but only had a few words with her.
  14. Will check her out soon. Went with a 'natural' one from this bar quite a while ago - can't remember her name but I recall her English OK
  15. Googled. Urban Dictionary: Tower of power www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Tower+of+power The power of tower is when guys are stacked up on each other and the penis is in the other guys ass.
  16. First heard this (if I'm right) on the Greek Island of Ios long time ago. I'd chummed up with an Irish guy - long ginger hair and beard - plus glass eye. Music came on and seems he spotted two guys dancing together. He turns to me and says - "Oi tink we're in a Fairies Parlour" It was ages before I heard the full record. Frank Zappa - Bobby Brown,. ?
  17. On a sidebar I just watched a short program about the Greek island Hydra some time ago & it was mentioned that Leonard still owns a house there since the late'50s & if I understood correctly it is occupied by his former wife.... Suzanne. Where have I heard that name.. Had holiday on Hydra with GF in the late 70's. Fairly barren island. Water has to be brought in from the mainland, stony beaches, Policeman ordered (waving gun) girls to cover their (naked) breasts up whilst trying to sunbathe on the craggy rocks. Overrun by cats. Counted about 50 round the tables in cafe. In later years it became very trendy place. Believe Jagger also had house there for a while. Sort of place "Laughing Len" would love. !
  18. It's "2Donnas" - next to the bar with all the bottles. Donna used to throw really good parties. She's still there.
  19. Good to know it's not "The Vinyl Countdown".
  20. Many years ago I stayed awhile on Koh Chang - just a few guest houses there and no road - but a number of beach bars. Staggering back one night after a rake of Mekong Whiskey I felt stirrings in the trouser department. I sprinted into the nearest beach bar and headed for the toilet. Phew - just in time to abandon the jeans and squat over the open bog. Much relief. Then I took stock and realised there was - as expected no bog paper. Peering outside there I spotted a line of freshly washed clothes - no doubt belonging to the hairy arsed backpackers who were flopping at this beach shack. As is well known backpackers arrive with a $50 note and a clean shirt - and it's two weeks before they change either. 'Nuff said. Swiped and wiped with a crisp fresh shirt. Sorted.
  21. Not checked in there for a while. "Roadhouse" has a couple of new LB's but still very quiet - except the other night when Sally was holding court - outstanding.
  22. "Luk/Nuk" didn't go to Jimmy's Bar but now working at the middle bar on the front row of three on Rhompo. "Jam" still at Corner House but she tells me she now has "husband" and is off the market. ! Nearby is 'Mint Bar" with 2 or 3 LB's including Dao late of "Sally/Roadhouse" bar. (pic). Still a couple at "Piss Bar" and one spotted at "You Twat (2) Bar. !!!!!
  23. I was with my chum - he on his first trip to Thailand. I had decided against going to Pi Pi (too busy) and against Khao Lak (lots of building work). We booked in a holiday village on Kho Lanta. Christmas night we had a great time at a beach bar. i was getting on well with a bargirl and my chum wandered back to the cabin. The GG - I never knew her name was just looking for "lomance" as she said, having just run away from cruel Thai husband. The bar closed and she dragged a mattress out and we slept (!) all night on the beach. Next morning woken by the crack of dawn I said farewell and promised to see her that night. I headed back to the cabin where my chum was still asleep. I grabbed my cozzie and a book and went down to the beach. This was about 8.30. I setled down to read with my back against a bank of sand that was on the edge of the village. After a while decided it was time for a swim. Looked up and thought "F**k me" "Where's the sea gone"? Return to reading. Looked up a while later and saw a rapidly approaching wave - not huge. "Hello - Surfs Up". I thought. The wave rushed in maybe 3 foot high and broke at my feet. Watched a while as the sea receeded and then it came back bigger and faster. It overturned fishing boats and the locals were soon there wondering the same as me no doubt. I ran to our cabin and roused my chum saying "Something is happening out here - check it out" Back to the sea and this time the wave came full tilt - maybe only 5 foot high but enough to set everyone dashing thro' the village. It wrecked cabins overturned 'fridges and anything in its path. There was a slope in the road leading up to the main road (rough red earth) and the wave stopped short. After a while we waded (foolish maybe) back to our cabin - flooded and retrieved our belongings. Back to the main road wondering what to do next. A Thai girl from the local pharmacy pulled up in a truck and told us to get in as another wave was expected. She drove us up to a high headland near another holiday complex. There must have been a couple of hundred of us all camped out. Nobody seemed to know what had happened. (Another friend of mine was out on the sea birdwatching and had to be rescued by the Thai Navy - tho' out there was the safest place - he knew what had happened). So we settled down for the night. within the first half hour the local Thais had set up a free food stall, brought sheets and blankets and soon after a beer bar. Next morning still not much news what had happened. We eventually got a ride back to the main town. The roads were packed with people trying to get away from the island. Some were saying the ferry was not crossing. I managed to sort out a private car to take us to the small jetty and thankfully soon on board and over to the mainland. We had tickets for the overnight train to Bangkok and it wasn't till we reached there we knew the full worldwide story. On Khao Lanta I believe, about 12 people had died nearly all local fishermen. I hope the girl I met was safe. Every Boxing Day I always go down to a quiet stretch of beach wherever I am in Thailand and have a quiet moment. Thanks to Buddah (?) and thanks to the Thai people who were amazing in the way they took care of us.
  24. Think you'll find that the're on Soi Honey used for Long Distance calls. Operated by very helpful girls.
  25. I missed this. Thought the only musician that had same birthday as me (today) was the late Dave Brubeck. I remember the first time I heard "Tutti Frutti" WTF Superb compared to Brubeck's elevator music.
