Victory Monument Maps

Victory Monument is one of the busiest transportation hubs in Bangkok, where hundreds of vans depart throughout the day for destinations both in and out of town. Getting lost and spending hours to find a right spot to find them is all but guaranteed to the uninformed. Plus with the crowds and heat, it’s a real struggle for tourists and even Thais.

 

A group of senior media art students from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi saw the struggle and made solving the problem their thesis project.

 

Thaivans, by Thanyapat Aromchuen, Chontipa Malee, Thadarat Chaveinghong, Apirat Leakapidecha, Natthanan Yamnun and Poom Sukhantaphan features a van map, application and motion graphic, all done on a budget of THB80,000, which was supported by the university.

 

Poom said he’s been taking vans from Victory Monument since he was young, and he’s always struggled with how to find the right spot for the right destination because it was chaotically organized, so he hopes their project can help a lot of people.

 

Apirat, who prepared the van map now installed at Victory Monument said she and her friends did research during the time the whole systsem was being reorganized, so they had to do it all over again.

Suchada, a van operator said the project is very useful because commuters can now quickly find the right vans instead of sometimes taking up to an hour to locate the one they needed.

 

Ten van maps have been installed around Victory Monument now. One located on the Victory Monument skywalk is only there until May 25 unless it wins a permanent spot with the support of officials

It's not that difficult to find the correct bus; just ask!

One problem that I see with the maps is that the whoever decides which bus should pick-up where, change the plan every few months.
