Transgender schoolchildren will have the option of wearing a skirt and blouse or trousers and shirt to a top Public School in a historic change of uniform policy.

Brighton College has broken with hundreds of years of tradition to accommodate boys who identify as girls and girls who identify as boys.

The Public School said it was reacting to a changing society which recognises some children have gender dysphoria, a condition of feeling one's emotional identity as a male or female to be opposite to one's biological sex.

Headmaster Richard Cairns told students that uniform codes that go back 170 years would be replaced by a "trouser uniform" and a "skirt uniform" for all pupils up to the age of 16.

Transgender pupils will be able to wear a full Tweed blazer, tie and trousers, or a skirt, bolero jacket and open-neck Revere blouse.

Parents will be required to write to the School before pupilscan change their uniform.

Mr Cairns said "If some boys and girls are happier identifying with a different gender from that of which they were born, then it is my job to make sure we accommodate that.

"I hate the idea of anyone being in my School who is miserable because they're being asked to dress in a way they are uncomfortable with.

Brighton College has instead decided to abolish the notion of boys' and girl' schools altogether.

Girls are already walking around the campus in trousers and the school has said more than one boy has expressed the desire to wear a skirt
