London UK accommodations

I need a little help and thought I'd reach out to other forum members.

My daughter has been accepted at a London University to do her Master's of Science degree. She will start in September, 2015. The tuition is obscene enough but pales in comparison to finding suitable/affordable accommodations in London for a female student. Her campus is located in Central London.

I would appreciate any help, leads, connections, advice, et cetera in finding an affordable room, flat (shared if necessary) that's furnished if possible. We truly don't know where to start. She would need a place for 12 to 24 months.

If you can help please let me know. You can either post openly or PM me directly.

Thanking you in advance for your help

Hiya Sam

I live and work in central London, even though rental prices are shooting up i still think she can find a room in a decent flat share lets say with two others for £600-800 a month.

Transport and general safety are key, I can give you a heads up on how safe a place is.

In general, north and west London are the most sought after places to live - although traditionally run down East London is getting very trendy and all that (as is also south London).

You dont want to have a long commute into central London. I can recommend a few areas if you want as have cycled around many parts of even though i am not from here. Depends on her own preferences too, if she likes trendy areas, going out and all that.

Some areas to get you started,  i wont bother even mentioning the likes of Chelsea, Kensington  etc as they are mad expensive.

Bermondsey and Canada Water - close to the centre, near the river which is nice and decent transport links

Clapham is decent area, lively,  but getting a bit pricey

Swiss Cottage/Little Venice/Hampsted  - bit pricey but nice areas

There are many other areas in the suburbs but you would be looking at 1 hour each way commute on the underground.

You also have to factor in council tax which depends on the borough that you are in (Socialist run boroughs are more expensive) but in general that is between £500 and £1,000 per flat per year. Its better if that is included in the overall price per month.

Here is the site i have used in the past, https://www.spareroom.co.uk/

Do an advanced search on that site. It might be an option just to take a short let for 3 to 6 months and see if she likes that area.  Also as you get to make friends one might want to consider locating near them as its so big a city you wont see much of your friends if the live in a different side of the city (probably like New York i suppose)

Feel free to PM and i can give you the heads up on what the areas you are searching are like

Regards

Hi,

I happen to be running an Estate Agency and I have vast contacts if it will prove impossible for me to get her something from our own stock. So feel free to get in touch. Im more than happy to advise on anything else as well. I was a newcomer to both UK and England myself 10 years ago... ;)

I live in Central London .. proper .. near Tower Bridge. The prices are going sky high due to the Gentrification of East London and other parts. Average House in Central is around £560,000 now and rents pro rata and rising...

also it depends on what Uni Campus she is at for Train access. This is important.

Thanks B and TC.

I don't know the layout of London but here is the link of the university she will be attending. Would appreciate if you could suggest an area for accommodations close by or another area within easy access to the university via a train.
