  1. What are your favorite beaches anywhere in the world?

Below is a list of the top 10 beaches in Thailand as rated by Trip Advisor reviewers.   These reviewers are often one off travelers and probably don't have as good a basis for comparison as sex tourists who check out many locations.  Though I guess many mongers don't make it past Sodom By The Sea/

Here's their list as a starting point for discussion.  One of my favorite beaches is the undeveloped eastern end of Fire Island not too far from New York City.

    • Nai Harn Beach, Phuket
    • Railay Beach, Krabi
    • Kata Noi Beach, Phuket
    • Phra Nang Beach, Krabi
    • Sunrise Beach, Satun
    • Thong Nai Pan Noi, Koh Phangan
    • Karon Beach, Phuket
    • Freedom Beach, Phuket
    • Long Beach, Krabi
    • Laem Tong Bay, Krabi
  2. I reckon this bar deserves its own thread so posts about I Miss You Bar have been moved here from another thread.

It's on Soi Mad In Thailand.   If you walk from 69 Bar towards Soi Buakhao it's on the left hand side just past the huge beer bar complex.

If you get to Nina Massage, the all ladyboy massage shop, then you've gone too far.

If entering from Buakhao, there's a Kasikorn Bank on the corner.

I was on the soi and thirsty so figured I'd pop in for a cold one.  My Leo was 70 baht.

When I sat down a ladyboy name Mimi started to massage me.  I'm kinda of tired of bargirl banter so a bar massage is a nice alternative.  After about 5 minutes she motioned for a drink but I gave her 40 baht in lieu of a drink.  She continued the massage for another 5 minutes or so.  Finished by beer, payed my bin, gave her another 20 baht and everyone was happy.  Well, I guess she'd be happier with a customer but that's life.

It wasn't long ago that this soi had zero dedicated ladyboy venues and now it has three: two bars and a massage shop.

Parts of Bangkok are at risk of getting submerged permanent in the next 30 years because due to land subsidence coupled with rising sea level, said Associate Professor Vichitbusaba Marom, a town planning expert at Thammasat University, on Friday.

She pointed out that sea level has been rising at an average of 5 mm annually while land in Bangkok has been subsiding at an average of 2-28 mm a year with the western side of the Chao Phraya river subsiding at more than 10 mm annually compared to an average of 15 mm on the eastern side.

Land subsidence in industrial areas is faster, averaging 30 mm a year, said the professor, adding that this means, in the next 30 years, parts of Bangkok will be under water.

She pointed out that another factor contributing to greater risk of flooding is rain and water runoff from the north and quick urban development such as construction of buildings that block the natural flow of water.

  6. If on a baht bus, beware of this lady:

In the early hours of Tuesday, a Dane and a German became victims of pickpockets operating on Baht Buses in the South Pattaya area.

Mr. Torben Fries aged 49 from Denmark was the first to arrive at Pattaya Police Station where he complained of losing 15,000 Baht from his trouser pocket and claimed a Thai Lady sat next to him had removed money from his trouser pocket initially without his knowledge.

Minutes later a German, Mr. Bruno Rummer aged 50, arrived at Pattaya Police Station and made a similar complaint. He lost a Samsung Galaxy Smart Phone.

Both were travelling on the route which begins at the Traffic Light Junction on Pattaya Second Road and South Pattaya Road, close to the Chaimongkol Temple and travels to the Central Pattaya Road junction.

The men were shown pictures of pickpockets previously arrested by Pattaya Police and both identified one of the former detainees as the person responsible for the theft of the items.

Police will now attempt to locate and arrest the woman, who remains at large for now.

  7. What are your strategies to prevent theft by overnight guests?

I reckon using the in room safe is a good start.

    But laptops usually don't fit.

So a Kensington type lock isn't  a bad idea.

But MacBook Airs don't have a slot for a Kensington lock.

    Anyone use The Blade?

Watching & listening to a pilot banging on the cockpit door with increasing urgency, people must have been shitting their pants.

This is another plane disaster that can be attributed to Al Qaeda / Taliban / ISIS. It was only after 9/11 that the decision was made to have all cabin doors on commercial planes lockable. And secured so they couldn't be broken down. The pilot would have known that as he banged away in vain.

Excellent point Paccers  that the reaction to terrorist threats caused this accident.

As far as shitting my pants, even a little turbulence makes me nervous.  I don't get airsick or seasick; that's not a problem.  But I have this unfounded fear that the turbulence is going to cause the plane to go spinning out of control.

  9.  Fairly decent article by Forbes which touches on the Pattaya Condo market:

Russian tour groups are known in the hospitality trade as cheapskates

Who would buy a condo is sleazy old Pattaya? With its filthy beach, filthy people, and pathetic old and young prostitutes?

The Russians are leaving! The Russians are leaving!

I was in the process of writing about the drop in Russian visitors to Thailand and the region as the result the devaluation of the ruble. Now it turns out that the plunge in January was more drastic than forecast, as the Bangkok Post reported March 20.

There were 46% fewer Russian arrivals in Thailand in January 2015 than the year before: 145,605 this year versus 269,479 in January 2014. While the December-January period is always Thailand’s high tourism season, bear in mind that tourism in early 2014 was depressed by Bangkok street rallies that ultimately led to the May military coup.

The huge January 2015 drop in Russian visitors followed year-on-year declines of approximately 27%, 23% and 21% in October, November and December, respectively, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.  In the 4th quarter of 2013, there were more than 600,00 Russian visitors to Thailand, while in the 4th quarter of 2014 there were fewer than 200,000 according to the PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) mPower database.

Back in 2005, when the ruble’s long run was taking off and the value against the US dollar was three times more than it is today, a little over 100,000 Russians visited Thailand. In 2013, the numbers had ballooned to 1.7 million. Russians are by far the largest group of European visitors to Thailand. Along with China, Thailand has been the most popular Asian destination for Russians in recent years; no other Asian countries come close. Of course, for eastern-dwelling Russians, a jaunt to China is less expensive than to Thailand so, as seen in the box below, Russian travel trends to China haven’t been affected as much by the ruble plunge.

    http://blogs-images.forbes.com/susancunningham/files/2015/03/EDit-Best-border-quarterly-4-countries.png

Russian visitors to Thailand, China, Cambodia, Singapore – 2014

After Thailand, Russians’ favorite  Southeast Asian countries in recent years have been, in order,  Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines. The sudden popularity of Vietnam is intriguing: Almost 365,000 Russians visited last year, according to PATA numbers. Sure, Vietnam used to be a Soviet satellite well populated with Russian advisers, but before 2012 the Russian traffic was negligible.

Despite the continuing state of martial law and the Russian downfall, overall tourism to Thailand has characteristically bounced back.  A total of 2.65 million visitors of all nationalities arrived in January 2015, according to PATA. That’s even more than the 2.31 million arrivals of January 2013 (that is, back when Thailand was politically stable). What Thailand lost in Russian tourists in the past year has been more than matched by upticks in visitor numbers from neighboring countries, Hong Kong and, most especially, mainland China–the last group violating so many Thai customs and stirring so much antagonism that I’ll have to address it another day. Not that Russian tourists are known for their manners either, especially when drunk.

Russians Fueled Pattaya Real Estate Market

Of course, there have been knock-on effects on restaurants, tour companies and hotels catering to Russian tourists, even if Russian tour groups are known in the hospitality trade as cheapskate”low yield” tourists.  Russians that do come are discovering that smartphones and electronics are no longer cheaper in Thailand than at home. The value of the ruble has fallen about 50% against the Thai baht in the past year.

But who would guess that the Russian declines would also have such a major impact on the condo market in Pattaya, as reported by the Bangkok Post last month. Who would buy a condo is sleazy old Pattaya? With its filthy beach, filthy people, and pathetic old and young prostitutes? lot of Russians, apparently. According to the Post story, in 2013 Pattaya accounted for 19% of all Thailand real estate sales–and about 65% of those were to Russians. The “deputy honorary consul of the Russian Federation” for the Pattaya area says that half of Russian visitors to Thailand in 2014 spent at least some time in Pattaya.

The trend was to buy a condo and then rent it out to other Russians when not owner occupied. Some owners are now struggling now to meet their payments.  Others that are fully paid up still want to sell, even at a loss, to get hard currency.  Construction projects are being called off as well. Andrey Snetkov, who works for a Russian travel agency, says that Russians can no longer easily get bank loans for travel. He also notes that citizens of other countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States are being affected by similar pressures.

    Pattaya: Russian Media Hub

There’s a Russian-language magazine that specializes in Pattaya properties as well but the editor says she hasn’t seen a drop in advertising because she is targeting “the premium market.” (Premium in Pattaya?). The operators of Russian-language TV and radio stations in Pattaya don’t profess to be concerned either.

I suppose I was surprised by so much Russian participation in Pattaya real estate because the degraded seaside city east of Bangkok is usually the first way station when prepaid package tours from a new market start arriving in Thailand. Some tourists from the particular market gradually become willing to pay slightly more for prettier surroundings and cleaner beaches and move up to Phuket, maybe Samui and Koh Chang.

The annual Chinese tourist numbers to Thailand piled up for years–into the hundreds of thousands–without being very visible in most of Thailand. That’s because the Chinese were coming on super-cheap tours and staying in low-star hotels in Pattaya or in giant blocks on outer Bangkok expressways.  I started noticing Chinese tourists around the time annual arrivals surpassed 1 million. That’s when some began staying in two- and three-star hotels in inner Bangkok, tearing through hypermarts and dispersing cigarette butts outside McDonald’s outlets.

Russians followed the pattern to some extent–moving on up–though I have never noticed that many in Bangkok. They still rank as the third-largest visitor group to Thailand, after Chinese and Malaysians. Russians certainly are a presence in Phuket, where charter flights from Russian cities still fly directly, though there are  fewer in number than last year. There have long been rumors that super-wealthy Russians were buying villa condos and other properties in Phuket.

Then, in the past few years, as  Australia and Singapore enacted measures to stem purchases by mainland Chinese of high-end residential properties, some wealthy Chinese were supposedly investing in bolt-holes in Thailand. In the Post’s story on Pattaya property woes, some real estate brokers suggest that Chinese buyers will fill in for the Russians soon enough. And why shouldn’t new middle-class Chinese have their own bolt-holes? The problem is, at least for the near future, Chinese are grappling with their own credit crunches.

BANGKOK // Thailand’s junta chief warned detractors on Wednesday that he would hold onto power indefinitely if they continued to oppose his plans for the kingdom in a heated press briefing ahead of an overseas trip.

Prayuth Chan-ocha, who was appointed as prime minister a few months after seizing power in a coup last May, appeared irritated when he met reporters shortly before flying to Brunei, frequently raising his voice and shaking his head.

“If the situation remains like this I can tell you that I will hold on to power for a long time,” he said after denouncing those who criticise the country’s lack of democratic progress.

Why is there all this fuss about elections?” he asked. “[if there’s no election] will anyone die?”

PARIS — As officials struggled Wednesday to explain why a jet with 150 people on board crashed amid a relatively clear sky, an investigator said evidence from a cockpit voice recorder indicated one pilot left the cockpit before the plane’s descent and was unable to get back in.

A senior French military official involved in the investigation described a “very smooth, very cool” conversation between the pilots during the early part of the flight from Barcelona, Spain, to Düsseldorf, Germany. Then the audio indicated that one of the pilots left the cockpit and could not re-enter.

“The guy outside is knocking lightly on the door, and there is no answer,” the investigator said. “And then he hits the door stronger, and no answer. There is never an answer.”

He said, “You can hear he is trying to smash the door down.”

While the audio seemed to give some insight into the circumstances leading to the Germanwings crash on Tuesday morning, it also left many questions unanswered.

“We don’t know yet the reason why one of the guys went out,” said the official, who requested anonymity because the investigation was continuing. “But what is sure is that at the very end of the flight, the other pilot is alone and does not open the door.”

  12. OK maybe another dumb question but is maid service common in these montly places ?

    it varies.

if the place caters to most daily residents then it's likely that daily maid service is included.

at most Condos it is not included but available for a fee.

other places maybe twice a week or every other day.

If a guy lives here full time, he probably doesn't need daily cleaning.

But if you are having daily sex then you might want clean sheets.

Questions to ask when renting by the month:

    1) what's the price?

    2) what's the electric charge per unit?

    3) what's the water charge

    4) are there charges for internet?   I like to try out the internet before moving in and paying money.

    5) are their joiner fees? joiner fees for threesomes? is there an ID check

    6) how often is free maid service?  what's the charge for cleaning?

    7) is there a security deposit required?

    8) is a month a calendar month or 30 days?

    9) is brekkie included

    10) is their a pool

During low season I think it's a bad idea to decide in advance and pay for a month upfront.

Instead, find a cheap daily rental and then look at the places that are on your list.

  13. Maybe a dumb question but do lbs get any portion of of say 300 bht bar fine or does bar keep it all ?

Varies by bar but typically around 100 baht.

By giving the girl something there's less incentive for the girl to agree to meet the guy right outside the bar.

Also by giving the girl something it's tougher for a cashier to just pocket the barfine.

Also heard of one bar that gave their freelancers the entire barfine

  14. No I would never expect a refund or to be pro-rated because its still a way better deal, I just thought they might not rent to you if you leave early even if you pay full amount , at least that's what I thought happened to other guy

Just check in and say you're staying a month and leave when you want GT.

But if you know you are only staying for 2-3 weeks a better option might be dealing with a realtor named Patrice.

He takes the monthly rate divides by 30 and multiplies the number of days you stay.  Plus water, electric, cleaning if u want, and a mandatory final clean.'

He has plenty of units in Yensabai, VCC, UCC, and My View Condos.  Lots of rooms in low season.  But tough to book during peak season.

  15. Was thinking of maybe doing a monthly rental next time as its way cheaper, but I think I remember reading somewhere (on LBR I believe ) that a guy was told he couldn't do a monthly rental if he was only staying 3 weeks even though he agreed to pay the whole monthly rate, does that sound right, makes no sense to me , is that common ?

Right as Trenton says, don't expect a refund, but you most certainly book and pay for a month and leave anytime you you please.

Monthly rates rarely include electric and water.  I think that's good though since I don't use much AC.

There are also some places where the monthly rate does not include room, sheet, and towel cleaning.

  16.

To get "salaried" requires for them to show up before a certain time every day and stay till closing.

Most bars can't afford to operate with salaries so the girls will get LD's and tips, bar fines and whatever the "costumer" gives them.

Good point about being tied to the bar from opening to closing Petesie.

Having happy part time non-salaried staff can be a win-win for both the barowners and the girls.

A girl who has many existing customers and the ability to get customers online is better off not to be tied to a bar from opening to closing for 100 baht a day salary.

While waiting for the phone to ring she can hang out with her friends at the bar and maybe grab a customer.

And friends in the bar can translate texts and help each other figure out where hotels are etc.

  17. :( Three nights full of femboys n LBs and i'm not there...  :mad0235:

I think these morlams are going to be very different than those on 3rd Road that you're used to Billy.  Not as good.  And not nearly as many femboys.  We'll save some femboys for you Billy!

The good thing though is this location is so easy to get to.  And if it's not good just a short walk to Lita Bar.
