  1. Welcome. I've resided in Thailand (Bangkok) for the last 10 years. To work here legally (and ya gotta be legal - the government is making it harder and harder to be an illegal drifter), you have basically two paths to follow:

    1. Get your self a job (in the US) with a multi-national corporation and get posted to Thailand, or
    2. Move here and become a teacher (which is pretty much the only profession legally open to us). You'll take a huge hit on the income going the teaching route.

The only other profession open to foreigners is professional chef. Hope you can cook :)

  2. "By the way, she is referred to variously in this thread as "Guitar" and "Tar". "

Ah, the Thai pronunciation of things. It's actually pronounced "Dthah" (ตา) - Thai has sounds English just doesn't have. But that's ok, because they butcher our names as well LOL

  3. Other, less-publicized, scams to watch out for:

    1. The Thong Lo police - their favorite tactic is to pull you over (whether you're walking or in a taxi), demand to search you or your bag (or both) and suddenly find shitloads of drugs. Huge amounts of money will then be demanded in order for you to be "free." Way around it? Simply have your camera at the ready and start snapping photos. Even better, have your friends do it. Yes, it worked for me.
    2. If you need medical attention, DO NOT GO TO Police General Hospital or Phaya Thai Hospital. Their foreign rates are more expensive than most private hospitals.
    3. The BMA "police" are not police. They don"t carry guns. They cannot arrest you. They cannot demand your passport. And if they hold you, you can walk away.

  4. I can answer this one. You have a 30-day entrance stamp, not a visa. A 30-day stamp cannot be extended within Thailand. If you take a "visa-run" company, all you will get is a 15-day entrance stamp (regulation change from 2012). You are limited to 3 15-day stamps. The alternative is to go to Laos and apply for a proper tourist visa. The cost at the Thai consulate in Vientiane is (if memory serves me correctly) 1900 baht (payable in baht, dollars, or kip). If you have any other questions, let me know.
