  1. Thai banks are good at times. It seems the main problem with them, especially out in the sticks is actually opening an account. Some banks can be difficult especially if there's a lack of English speaking. In Pattaya though, rarely a problem.

The great thing is if you lose your card, which is easy in Thai ATMs because they process arse ways on compared to England anyway [, i.e the card comes out after the money] just go into any same bank branch with your passport and bank book and they'll give you a replacement immediately.

Dunno what happens in England now but it used to be that you had to wait for a replacement to come through the post, followed by a new pin number sometime later.

So you have to keep the SAME checking account open to reuse next year or its a simple open and close thing after they have the receipt?

no, it's a legit bank account, better to keep it open to save going through the hassle again next year. since i opened mine and the agent put the 800k in [for five minutes 5 years back]] i kept the account open ever since for use. Since the initial 800k,  it has never happened again. Doesn't seem to be needed annually. Maybe just an agreement the agent has with her mate in immigration. all immi have needed is my account book as proof i have a bank account. all i need every year is the account book, and a photo .

i guess the agent insisted on Bangkok bank Laawman?

  3. just to update Dukes post about the patcha bar. it seems to be dying a slow death sorry to report. the older lady owner and one older LB is the staff situation. No customers.

i do know one  BM who went there and reported very heavy 'buy me drink' action. He won't go again.

it will possibly be a cannabis shop soon....

No, I don't wear a Stetson but it would be fair to say I've poked a few old cows in my time.

thank god! it's bad enough having one cowpoke on the forum...

  5. one thing to remember is that if you do arrive in thailand on a 30 day visitor visa from the airport, and then want to change to a retirement visa. it is officially not possible to get the 90 day Non-0 within thailand. Although this unofficially can be done via big money and an agent, if you do this route your passport will be sent to Bangkok immigration office as they are the only one that will do the non-0. it can take the passport up to a month to get back to you.

it is much more sensible [and cheaper] to have the initial none-0 done at a thai embassy before coming to Thailand..

do that and the retirement visa is much easier. 2000 baht to do it yourself or around 12000 as Laawman said in the OP via an agent.

My agent did the whole thing for me for if i recall correctly 22000 baht some years ago when i flew to Cambodia for a couple of days holiday, losing my Thai retirement visa because i forgot to get a re-entry permit! The agent said that she will never do it again because of the hassles she had with Bangkok.

By the way Laawman, i note that you wear a Stetson... are you a cowpoke too?

  6. i guess that a lot of you out there might not know that Jomtien beach has been dramatically widened from the soi 9 area all the way down through Na Jomtien, the southern end of jomtien. It really is much bigger now [the beach]  getting from Beach road to the water edge is a major trek. No doubt some enterprising Thai will be importing camels soon. Probably with Cannabis advertising signs painted on them.

As is not unusual with Thai's they are all jumping on the legalisation of hash bandwagon. Every shop, coffee place etc is selling it, or trying to. Totally over the top.

It will all end in tears.

    Will Grunt be complaining now?

Nope, i can't hear anything at all from where i live.

according to Emmy and Sara, who i was chatting to at Emmy's bar last night, the location was changed simply because the dongtan beach road is closed for vehicle access at night.

  8. The nocturnal beach volleyball games that were taking place nightly somewhere in the Dongtan beach area, have now relocated to to the new improved main Jomtien beach.

For anyone interested, this is a much easier location to get to.  Jomtien beach road between the Now Hotel and soi 12. more or less opposite the big Pizza restaurant. And about 20 yards from soi Grunt!

Perhaps Quinn is subtly trying to improve your fashion image and deliberately buying too small shirts so that he can give them to you.

well, i must say that i hope he keeps it up. But please Quinn, not the winklepickers you were wearing the last time i saw you! [i kid you not folks!] i would be scared of stabbing cats if i wore them.

and also that artwork you copied QG, the Bottocelli thing amended by Quinn, in my opinion,is one of the best things Quinn ever did.

Ah OK. He seemed his usual svelte self when I saw him in February.

ancient history! he's from up north in England so has probably been living on bread and lard sandwiches since then.. but, he is still a fashionable man indeed.

T'was but a couple of weeks back when i went to Emmy's, saw the man in question and also young ChesterH who looked at the great black silk shirt  i was a-wearing and told me how cool i looked in it.. It was of course one of Quinn's too small hand me overs..

Yup, he is still the cool and trendy fellow he always has been.  But, perhaps not quite so svelte anymore.....

    don't perform in TH.

yes, visa issues Jimmy. And also very likely the promoter would vanish with the takings....

some years back on soi 6 Jomtien, before it turned into the massage meat market it became, there used to be the Bristol Bar. Just a little one unit place. Every Sunday the owner held a 'come-one come all' for local expat musicians to jam outside the bar for local charities. A basket was passed around for a collection.  Until one Sunday immigration came along and arrested everyone for working without a visa.

This was about the same time that they also raided  the local Bridge club and detained god knows how many 70-80 year old guys and gals for gambling.

  12. it's really very easy.

if you don't want to be bothered by someone, just start telling them about Indian tranvestites getting free housing in somewhere you have never heard of.

    They'll soon be fast asleep.

If you really want to get rid of them permanently, talk about Afghani trannies in England as big truck's are passing by the bar....

Anyone been in the Patcha Bar on Soi 4, not got a sign yet (but it used to be the Katty Bar)

Apparently a few LB's mooching about in there

yes, it's the old Katty bar. All still early days Duke, Evidently it is owned by a lady who runs a massage shop further down soi 4.

I'm still a bit unsure but believe it's a mixed bar currently having one LB and 2 GGs. Last night there were just the 2 GGs there.

However the week before there were 4 ladyboys sat there chatting before going to Emmy's birthday bash. I think that Tiger may be staying there.

No doubt all will come clear soon.
