  1. RIP Bri

A deadbeat dad in Ohio allegedly stabbed his transgender son to death in a fight over money, but told a 911 dispatcher that members of a cult were responsible for the killing, the Plain Dealer reported.

Akron police arrested Kevin Golec, 52, on murder and felony domestic violence charges on Friday after Brian Golec, 22, died of a stab wound to the neck.

The killing sent shockwaves through the local LGBT community. Brian Golec, a drummer in a punk rock band, once identified as a woman and went by the name Bri before changing back to a male identity in the last year, according to the Plain Dealer.

"There was a time he identified as 'Bri' and as a woman, but for the last year or so, he identified as Brian," the victim's friend, Geoff Ackerman, told the Plain Dealer. "But Brian hated labels."

Kevin Golec told police someone broke into his house and attacked him and his son, whom he claimed was in a cult, the Akron Beacon-Journal reported.

"They attacked our home. They came into our home," Golec said in a 911 call obtained by ABC Cleveland. "He's in a cult and all this sh--. These guys came in. I fought them off. They got him."

But police arrested the elder Golec, who had two past felonies for failing to pay child support, and said his son's transgender status was not a factor in the killing.

Golec will be arraigned Tuesday in Akron Municipal Court.

"Please keep our Akron trans community in your thoughts and prayers," the advocacy group TransOhio said in a statement. "We are community. We stand strong, together. Always."

The victim's mother, Christine Hamblin, said Brian was trying to reconnect with his father and allowed him to move into the home.

But Sarah Price, Brian Golec's fiancée, said the father may have had a drug problem and stole money from the home, creating friction that led to the deadly confrontation, ABC Cleveland reported.

"He was a beautiful soul, beautiful spirit," Price told ABC Cleveland. "He was my soul mate and he wanted more than anything to change the world."

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) — Democratic congressman Mike Honda said on his Twitter account he has a transgender grandchild, an announcement that comes amid a national conversation about people who struggle with gender identity.

Honda posted the tweet Wednesday along with a photo of himself with his arm around a smiling child with shoulder-length hair. He published he is “the proud grandpa of a transgender grandchild” and added he hopes the child can feel safe at school without fear of being bullied.

Honda also posted the note on his Facebook page while noting the speech he gave recently at the Courageous Conversation conference on making schools safer for children.

“We need to ensure that our LGBTQ youth are never bullied because of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity,” he wrote. “These children need our protection and our love.”

Honda represents California’s Silicon Valley and is the founder and chairman of the Congressional Anti-Bullying Caucus and is a member of the LGBT Equality Caucus.

  3. RIP Juan Francisco Guillermo.

You have to admire a guy who takes on this sort of challenge.

Juan Francisco Guillermo, who was trying to cycle 250,000km in five years, was killed after being hit by truck in north-east Thailand, police said.

A Chilean cyclist’s attempt to set a record for biking around the world has ended with his death in a road accident in northeast Thailand police said on Sunday.

Juan Francisco Guillermo, 47, was hit by a pickup truck and immediately killed Saturday on a highway in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

According to police and accounts on social media, Guillermo was attempting to set a Guinness world record by cycling 250,000km (155,350 miles) on five continents in five years.

His journey started in November 2010 and was scheduled to end in November this year.

Guillermo’s wife was on another bicycle with their two-year-old son and suffered a slight sprain in the accident, said police Col Torsak Thammingmongkol. It was not clear how long they had accompanied Guillermo in his round-the-world cycling odyssey.

The driver of the pickup truck was arrested on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail, said Torsak. The offense carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

“It was an accident caused by the driver’s recklessness. The road was straight and the cyclist was in his own lane,” the officer said.

The death comes as Thailand’s government is trying hard to promote bicycling for commuting, sport and tourism.

In February 2013, a British couple on a similar round-the-world quest was killed in a road accident in eastern Thailand.

PHUKET: Smoking and eating are now banned on Phuket beaches following a press conference today to clarify the new “no beach chair” rule (story here).

Governor Nisit Jansomwong called the conference following tourists’ protests of police officers asking them to remove their beach chairs from the sands (story here).

“Despite smoking and eating being banned, people will still be able to drink on the beach,” Gov Nisit told the Phuket Gazette.

In the early hours of Friday, Chonburi Immigration arrested a 41 year old Dutch National, wanted by German Police in connection with the cultivation and distribution of Marijuana from his base in Ibiza, Spain in 2010.

Mr. Ronald Cornelis Vink was arrested at the Planet Earth Beach Club in Soi 15 off Jomtien Beach Road following a tip-off. He had been on-the-run in Thailand since he arrived on 25th March 2012 and was tracked for a period of 4 months in 2012 but Police lost track of him until now.

According to a German arrest warrant he is wanted on three offences dating back to the Summer and Winter of 2010. He is accused of cultivating Marijuana in Ibiza, Spain and then distributing the drugs, with the help of others who have already been convicted, to countries around Europe, including Germany.

Mr. Vink was initially detained at Dongtan Police Sub-Station on Jomtien Beach where it was confirmed that the visa in his passport had already expired.

Immigration Police will take over the case and will hand over Mr. Vink to the German authorities who will escort him to Germany where he will face trial on three drug production and distribution offences as detailed in the original arrest warrant from 2012.

  6. The $10 + 500B that BKK Bank charges for the ACH transfer

I was a bit lazy presenting the fees as the fee charged to me is by far the most common fee.

  7. I think that's the Tunisia flag, so I am guessing Tunisia??

    Correctomundo Ciobha!    :drinks:

The city is Sfax.   Given the name of this African port city at quiz night, we could not name the country.

Above is an artist's rendition of the Sukhumvit tunnel; the construction is tying up Pattaya traffic.

Do you think the price tag is a typo?

An engineer from the department building the 837.4 billion baht traffic-bypass under Sukhumvit Road assured Pattaya business leaders that the 420-meter-long tunnel would not flood.

Authorities shut down ‘naked sushi’ restaurant

    Friday, 13 February 2015

The restaurant had been open since 2011, but as soon as old photos of its “naked sushi” specialty went viral on the Internet, the owner of Pattaya’s Tokyo Kids knew what would come next.

Sure enough, Pattaya police, Banglamung district officers and military personnel arrived at the Soi Kophai 10 eatery around 10 a.m. Feb. 5. Restaurant staffers were waiting for them.

Tokyo Kids catered to Chinese, Korean and Japanese businesspeople and tourists, offering a 5,000-baht-per-person “Nyotaimori” sushi platter, with the fish and rice served on top of a young, attractive, and naked Thai woman.

A fixture in Tokyo’s red-light Shinjuku district, Nyotaimori is not commonly served in Thailand and an advertisement scanned and put on Facebook earlier this month proclaimed Tokyo Kids as the only “naked sushi” spot in Pattaya.

The advertisement and accompanying outrage about the objectification of women spread like wildfire online and Apichart Wongsuriya, 38, manager of the restaurant, told police that “Jason,” the Australian owner of Tokyo Kids, had called him to open the restaurant early, as he expected a raid.

Authorities showed up well before the restaurant’s normal 2 p.m. opening time, so there were no sushi damsels to lock up, or even a cook or waitress. Officers collected menus, receipts, and CCTV footage.

They also closed Tokyo Kids temporarily for operating without a proper license and selling alcohol without a permit before making their way to a press conference to decry the “inappropriate” and “humiliating” employment of women and the damage it does not only to the reputation of Thai women, but Pattaya as well.

Thousands of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand during their New Year holiday will receive "tourism manuals" in an effort to curb offensive behaviour, officials said Monday.

The city of Chiang Mai will be the focal point of the Mandarin-language manuals, as it is the most popular destination for Chinese tourists, with some 90,000 expected over this week's holiday period.

The manual will list museum etiquette, such as not touching paintings, warn against using public property as lavatories, and encourage proper driving behaviour, according to the Tourist Authority of Thailand office in Chiang Mai.

Chinese tourists in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai have been the target of numerous complaints from locals who accuse the visitors of defecating in the city's moat, causing traffic accidents with reckless driving and defacing several tourist attractions.

Chinese tourists were banned for half of Feb 3 from entering Wat Rong Khun, the "White Temple", one of the top tourist destinations in Chiang Rai, after complaints of inappropriate toilet usage.

Days earlier, photos of a Chinese tourist drying her bra and panties on a chair at Chiang Mai's airport created a firestorm online and tourism authorities told tour operators to curb such inappropriate behaviour.

  11. It was a GREAT party at Lita Bar last night.    :party0049::behind::party0011::girl_devil::happy0064:

    Lots of sexy new ladyboys!

Some special red wine was part of the buffet table.

So I got mao mak mak and a bit hungover this morning.

At Lita Bar the beer is always ice cold and the AC will cool you off on even the hottest day.

Inside there are high backed comfy booths for your groping pleasure.

Or you can sit outside on Soi BJ which is virtually free of motobike traffic.

Lita knows how to throw a great party!   :happy0065:

  12. Kasikorn use to be a sure thing and most others were impossible. That is why most everyone has a K bank account. But things change...

    Yup.

And there are plenty of ATMs in Pattaya.

But the bank officer will try to push the  high fee debit card on you that has features you don't need and not even present the Cheap Charlie ATM card as an alternative so she can hit her quota.  The card fee should only be 100-200 baht.

If you're a Yank and you want to have in the vicinity of 10K USD in your accout it is best to have less than 10K as with 10K or more total in all foreign accounts you're required to file a Treasury form.

There are some advantages for Americans and Brits to have a Bangkok Bank account if wiring money in as instead of a Swift Transfer you can do an ACH transaction to Bangkok Bank New York and Brits have a similar scheme with the london branch..  The fee is $10 plus 500 baht for most accounts.  But for me it'snot the lower fee but it is connected to an American account and with one click I can wire money in.

Not sure how I would initiate a Swift Transfer from the States with me being in the LOS as often banks want signed forms.

  13. I have always had the best luck going to the source (AIS-12Call or True) at one of their offices (every shopping mall).

Do they have an office in Pattaya?  I would like to inquire as to the difference between plans.

  14. Just curious whats so wrong with 1000 baht notes?

I prefer to carry 500 baht notes instead of 1000's.  This way, there's no chance, that I'll get back change for a 500 when I actually paid with a 1000.

So like my buddy xyzzy, I use the 900 baht method which means my bankbook fills up quickly.  So this year I've been going to the bank and withdraw about 10K and ask for 9000 in 500's and the rest in 100's.

I'm not a big spender, it's very rare that a night out on the piss will cost me more than 1000 baht.   Guys who go out with 10K baht in their pocket might not want to carry that many 500's.
