  2. Deputy Mayor of Pattaya Manoch Nongyai gave a press interview where he expressed his concern over foreign tourists...

Tourists apparently took ATK tests but only waited for 10-15 minutes for the test result. Why don't the test takers wait for the final result? he asked.

The deputy mayor also said foreigners wouldn't cooperate without testing...

I recall reading somewhere that starting January 16th Pattaya bars can stay open until 11PM?  What have you heard?

At least one bar in Bangkok announced today that they would be open now again until 11 pm:

    Also:

The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) prepares to reduce the level of COVID-19 alert, and is recommending to do the ATK test only once a week.

Dr. Kiattipoom Wongrachit, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health told reporters today that during the first week of 2022, the number of infected people increased dramatically but that the number was now stable and will gradually decrease as will the number of critically ill patients. The number of patients requiring tracheal intubation decreases also he said. If this continues, the Ministry of Public Health will consider taking back the level 4 warning.

  4. Norwegian man falls in love with Cambodian woman working in Thailand, sends over $ 5,000 to get married

A Norwegian man was tricked into transferring hundreds of thousands of Baht to a 'Khmer' girl living in Chonburi province he hoped to eventually marry.

"A Norwegian man who fell in love with a Cambodian woman at Bang Saray beach three years ago and sent her 200,000 baht in cash to prepare for a wedding found out upon coming flying here that she is already involved with another man so reported her to police, Sanook.com said (Jan. 9).

Mr. Kyrie Vigdahe, 55, asked Mr. Wynn Chainet, a restaurant operator at Chonburi’s Bang Saray sub-district, to help him get in touch with Mr. Prateep Nakbangkerd, an attorney at the Legal Aid Centre in this province.

Once Prateep found out what had happened he took Vigdahe to file a complaint against the woman, Ms. Sreemom, 29, with Pol. Lt. Col. Samran Sukto, an inspector at Sattahip police station.

He told the police officer that he fell in love with Sreemom via Facebook and met her at Bang Saray beach in early 2019. As he was happy with her he told her he wanted to take her to Norway to marry him there.

However the Covid-19 pandemic delayed the wedding but he kept in touch with her via video calls. Sreemom had asked him to transfer money to her to prepare marriage documents for submission to the Norwegian embassy which he did at US$1,000 a time totalling 200,000 baht.

However, when he came to Thailand a few days before last Christmas and contacted Sreemom to meet him at Bang Saray beach where they had first met, to his dismay she did not show up.

He then checked and found out that she was working as a cook’s assistant at a restaurant in Bang Saray and was in a deep relationship with another foreign man.

He asked her about her promise to marry him and the money he had transferred to her to prepare marriage documents but she refused to answer and evaded him.

Kyrie said he is very unhappy about being betrayed especially because he had bought a new car to use after getting married to her. He asked Sattahip police to prosecute her to the highest level possible."

  9. I'm thinking that perhaps the best metrics to track Covid trends in Thailand are ICU and Ventilator stats.  Hospitalizations are probably extremely misleading in Thailand since asymptomatic people are sometimes hospitalized.  Deaths are a lagging indicator.  New cases are a function of testing.
Being seriously ill is what most of us are really concerned about which is what ICU and ventilator stats track.  OK, being sent to a field hospital while healthy is a concern too.
https://ddc.moph.go.th/covid19-dashboard/  is a website where you can track this on a daily basis. In the screenshot below, on the bottom right of the graphic, I believe the Purple 495 are Thailand ICU patients not on a ventilator and the Lavender 115 are the number of people in Thailand on ventilators.  But even if I'm wrong and the 495 includes the 115 on ventilators, it doesn't really matter for daily trend purposes.
If this interests anyone then feel free to post a screenshot if you visit the site in the future.

I'm wondering, how much the sheer increase in (ATK) testings had to do with Chon Buri getting to the #1 spot on the daily COVID charts...

Metrics must be country specific IMO... Because the # of people going to a hospital (or to 'hospitels') in Thailand can hardly be compared to the # of people who have tested positive in farangland and go to hospital there because I think in farangland people go to hospital only (or at least primarily) if they're symptomatic... If they're asymptomatic they simply stay at home...

In Thailand many people are sharing one bedroom or are sleeping in a common sleeping area. In Thailand it is not common that everyone has their own room - at least not for lower class Thais...

And even in farangland, the situation differs from country to country (Portugal vs. the UK or the US for example).

    (Sorry, can't open the webpage

    https://ddc.moph.go.th/covid19-dashboard/

    - probably because my ISP / VPN location is outside the LOS...)

In summary: Yeah I totally agree with you: The ICU occupancy rate (or even the absolute number of people in ICUs) is a better short-term indicator than absolute case numbers I think...

  10. A farang wielding a knife was arrested by Pattaya police this afternoon:

A farang, wearing a white T-shirt, shorts, no shoes, but holding a sharp knife in his hands, was arrested today in Pattaya.

When the farang saw the police officers, he ran away. The police was able to detain him in the apartment area of the Soi. He dropped the knife  while trying to escape.

Police discovered an iPhone 13 and some cash. His nationality is unclear. Police officers detained him at Pattaya City Police Station for further investigation.
