  1. It's good to see Kahuna posting again. He's ignoring me now because he thinks I am an anti-Semite. I'm not. I make fun of all Abrahamic superstitions equally.

Anyway, I stumbled upon this web site the other day and it has a lot of fun quizzes. The geography ones interested me the most so far. Such as a map of the US without the states borders included and you have to click where each state is located as the names appear in random order. It took me about 8 times before I got all 50 with no mistakes. Maybe it was here in an earlier post in this thread is where I found it, come to think of it. Another fun quiz was the states names appearing in random order, written in Greek, and also another one with the same thing but in Russian. Greek was more difficult for me. I got 22 correct in Greek and 30 correct in Russian, if I recall correctly.

Mary Clayton - It might be spelled Merry Clayton. The story goes (myth?) that she so over-did it singing with Jagger she miscarried a pregnancy. She also sang back up with Lynnerd Skinnyrd (sp?) on Sweet Home Alabama.

I envy you guys who have seen the Stones. Since I was old enough they've only got down to the penal colonies twice, and each time I couldn't go.

It is indeed Merry Clayton. She did have a miscarriage upon returning home from recording "Gimme Shelter", according to the Los Angeles Times.

IMO, that original studio cut is the best version of Gimme Shelter.

No Lisa Fisher, no Charlie Watts, but still. Last night in Charlotte, N.C.

    Greatest band ever!

The Stones are the best ever IMO, though I know some Beatles diehards who would disagree. As long as Mick and Keith can perform, the Stones will exist. When they retire the Stones will likely cease to be, as we remember them.

  4. The main thing I've noticed about the Duterte family is EVERY Pinay or Pinoy I have talked to who is from Davao City, strongly support them. Many remember or heard from their family members of the pre-Duterte days when Davao City was the murder capital of the PI. After a couple of terms under Roddy it became known as the most peaceful city in all SE Asia. The common folks largely credit him. Now, Inday Sara is equally well loved. One ladyboy I know there has a pic of her taken with Sara and she speaks glowingly of the mayor.  The latest word is she plans to run for Vice Pres in 2022.

  5. 2021 will always be the year of my eyes. Retina tears repaired in Jan and March. Right then left. Cataract surgery right eye last month, and left eye last week. The doctor said one other thing that I cannot pronounce will probably need to be done in the left eye, maybe in December.

Only trouble is, with cataracts, in the mirror, I looked like a 9 to me. Now I look like a 4.375 due to better vision.

Anti government protest in Pattaya today. People have no jobs, no money, and no vaccine.

The USA is giving away large amounts of vaccine to some countries in the western hemisphere. Hopefully, soon, we'll be doing the same for places like Thailand. Assuming lack of enough vaccine is the problem, that is. If the govt has vaccine but no plan for jabbing arms, then it's another story.

  7. Last Monday I had my 2nd ever colonoscopy and everything was fine. 4 tiny benign polyps. It made me wonder though if the doctor shoving the scope up our bung holes can tell which ones have been the recipient of much anal sex? Maybe if it was recent, but I'd guess after a while the sphincter muscle returns to normal. Imagine if someone had recently had some deep fisting. The doc may be thinking, wow, this scope is sliding in awfully easy.

Very sad indeed. Saw Steve Earle a couple of times also - way back with the Dukes. First time seeing Townes live in 1991 was at a large community centre in Romily (somewhere between Stockport and Manchester). Also on stage was Guy Clarke, John Stewart (both now gone) and Peter Rowan. What a line up. !

  9. There's many a strange impulse out on the plains of West Texas,
There's many a young boy who feels things he don't comprehend.
Well a small town don't like it when somebody falls between sexes,
No, a small town don't like it when a cowboy has feelings for men.

Well I believe to my soul that inside every man there's a feminine,
And inside every lady there's a deep manly voice loud and clear.
Well, a cowboy may brag about things that he does with his women,
But the ones who brag loudest are the ones who are most likely queer.

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other
What did you think those saddles and boots was about?
There's many a cowboy who don't understand the way that he feels for his Brother,
Inside every cowboy there's a lady who'd love to slip out.

Ten men for each woman was the rule way back when on the prairie,
And somehow those cowboys must have kept themselves warm late at night.
Now the Cowboys is a famous for getting riled up about fairies,
But I 'll tell you the reason a big strong man gets so uptight,

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other
That's why they wear leather, and Levi's and belts buckled tight.
There's many a cowboy who don't understand the way that he feels for his
    Brother,
There's many a cowboy who's more like a lady at night.

Well there's always somebody who says what the others just whisper
And mostly that someone's the first one to get shot down dead,
When you talk to a cowboy don't treat him like he was a sister
Ya can't fuck with the lady that's a sleepin' in each cowboy's head.

Don't mess with the lady that's a sleepin' in each cowboy's head.

But, Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other
Even though they take speed and drive pickups and shoot their big guns,
There's many a cowboy who don't understand the way that he feels for his
    Brother,
There's many a cowboy who keeps quiet about things he's done.

Yeah, Willie covered it too, and being he is famous, he made the song more well known. But Ned wrote and this is a case where the original is best. Willie left out the 2nd verse and changed the end of the 3rd verse. That doesn't set well with me.

The first two Covid waves in Thailand could hardly be called waves.  The current situation is about 10 times worse than on April 9th, the last night bars were open and my behaviour more risky than necessary.  Many expats believed there was no real cause for concern.

This time it's different.  If the bars opened tomorrow, I'd stay home.  I am now only eating at outdoor restaurants and only if I can be 2 meters away from everybody.  My close up exposure is extremely limited, just a few seconds at a 7/11 or takeout joint.

I am curious what voluntary steps, if any, our members have taken worldwide beyond government mandates?  If vaccinated, do you feel safe enough being vaccinated in Farangland now so that no precautions are necessary?

Where I live in Farangland, most people have been vaccinated. I'd say at least 70%. We can go into any store now sans mask if we are vaccinated. Though that appears to be on the honor system. I wore a mask into stores till they said I did not have to, so now I don't.

Townes Van Zandt - lucky enough to see him twice. The last time was in a pub in Doncaster (UK) playing to about 50 of us on a wet winters night. Superb. He was mightily chuffed when my chums informed him they has started up a pub/micro brewery and named it (after him) Townes Brewery. Produced some magnificent ales too.

Townes Van Zant was Steve Earle's musical hero. He named his son Justin Townes Earle, after TVZ. Sadly both Townes died early due to drug abuse.

This is an old argument between the Leftster and me.  I like covers and sometimes they are better than the original.  Sometimes the "original" is not by the songwriter.

I generally prefer the versions by the original artist. Since Bob wrote Quinn and we do have evidence he performed the song, even if never on an album,  that IMO makes his version the original.

Jagger and Richards wrote Dead Flowers and the Stones performed it. They did their usual great job. But Townes Van Zant's cover is the best. He owned that song as if it was written for him.

  13. Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn
    Everybody's building ships and boats
Some are building monuments, others are jotting down notes
Everybody's in despair, every girl and boy
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here
    Everybody's gonna jump for joy
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn
I like to go just like the rest, I like my sugar sweet
But jumping queues and makin' haste, just ain't my cup of meat
Everyone's beneath the trees, feedin' pigeons on a limb
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here
All the pigeons gonna run to him
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn
Let me do what I wanna do, I can't decide 'em all
Just tell me where to put 'em and I'll tell you who to call
Nobody can get no sleep, there's someone on everyone's toes
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here
    Everybody's gonna wanna doze
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn
Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn

  14. Well my name's John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only came to town about twice a year
He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It's before my time but I've been told
He never came back from Copperhead Road
Now Daddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge
Bought it at an auction at the Mason's Lodge
Johnson County Sheriff painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumblin' sound
Then the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin', knew something wasn't right
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin' down Copperhead Road
I volunteered for the Army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first, 'round here anyway
I done two tours of duty in Vietnam
And I came home with a brand new plan
I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
I just plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
And now the D.E.A.'s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screaming like I'm back over there
I learned a thing or two from ol' Charlie don't you know
You better stay away from Copperhead Road
    Copperhead Road
    Copperhead Road
    Copperhead Road
