Latest UK stats: Apart from the statistical evidence of rising covid figures there is anecdotal evidence. Many flights here have been cancelled because of staff shortages, though that seems to be because airlines are unable to quickly replace staff who they laid off during lockdowns. My hospital appointment on Monday was cancelled because of 'staff sickness'. My local library now opens from 10.30 rather than 9am because of staff shortages. My SiL had omicron recently. She told me it was quite bad, definitely worse than flu.

Are you talking deaths caused of Covid or with Covid? i.e normally healthy people with nothing but Covid ? or very ill people with say lung cancer and Covid. without that split the figures are somewhat meaningless or at the least misguiding. and always have been. the anecdotal evidence you write is not anecdotal at all, not of increased covid figures. The airlines? couldn't it just be bad management? nothing to do with Covid now then... staff sickness? so it must be Covid then? and, what is a SiL? English man! ah! sister in law? well my 76 year old S was laid up for 10 days with omicrud too. as was my 62 year old lady friend in Australia. both said it was bad but they have had worse or just as bad. all better than Viagra QG!

Although booster messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccine doses offer protection against severe COVID-19 induced by the Omicron variant, the ability of this third vaccine dose to prevent infection and viral transmission appears to be limited and insufficient. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-60994022 Chinese authorities have extended their lockdown of Shanghai to cover all its 25 million people after a fresh surge in Covid cases. I referred to the flight cancellations (and delays) because they are big news here at the moment. Airlines are publicly saying it's because of staff shortages due to staff leaving or being laid off during the lockdowns. And they are having difficulty recruiting because of labour shortages (after Brexit?). Also training up new staff can take up to 12 weeks apparently. Yes that is partly due to bad management. They should have foreseen these problems and started rehiring and training earlier. The anecdotal part of this is that there was a radio interview with a baggage handler who agreed that these were the main reason for delays and cancellations, but said that rising covid cases among staff were making the situation even worse. There was a report about this on the BBC4 Today program this morning, where it was said that although booster vaccinations might be less effective against omicron which is not so lethal, they would still prevent more severe infections and deaths from Delta so less deaths overall. Anyway I will have the fourth booster if I am offered it which i think I will be within the next few weeks.

What are the rules to get the fourth booster in the country where you stay now (UK ? ) ?
Quietguy
They are calling up over 75s now. Older residents in care homes. Also people with ongoing conditions which mean they have weakened immune systems. They should roll out the 4th booster jabs to other age groups over the next few weeks.
