Of course it was.

I have a really bad feeling you are correct on this. We may ride this one out , but what will happen next time?

These last 18 months have showed the worst in human beings. The world is overpopulated and maybe we don't deserve any better.

I don't worry for myself, I have lived a pretty good life, but I do have younger relatives who are facing a very uncertain future.

What worries me more is the precedents that have been set, Politicians pandering initially to the rabid media, Doctors and scientists.. Scientists for feks sake!

Design us another atom bomb boys! how about agent orange? Anthrax? Thalidomide!... scientists! problem is none of these cretins know or understand the first thing about sociology, how the lockdown/shutdown would affect society. Nor did they care a fuck, they managed to get on  television. False gods.

No, the precedent has been set for the future, and it is looking bleak. Once Covid decides to go then the next thing will come along in a few years and the lockdown crew will raise their voices again and Lo and behold, people like now will be so scared and demand action to protect their little lives. Not caring a hot poop how things like lockdown affect others.

oh my god! i just realised i have typed this without wearing a mask!

I fully agree with everything you have just said BBG, and like Seven, I really fear for the younger generation now who will probably now live the rest of their lives in a media induced fear bubble, and be subject to lockdowns (called for by cretins as you describe them) every time some fooker sneezes. But I also feel a bit sad for some older folk, like my dear old Dad. Touching 80 years of age, he is in reasonable health, despite suffering a stroke last year. He says he wants to live out the rest of his days, knowing they are limited, enjoying his health while he has it, and that means going full hog to the best of his ability. He can't stand the fact that all things he enjoys have been forcefully taken away from him by some fucker scientist, telling him it is for his own good.

yes Ciobha, i fear you are correct about the younger generation and their futures. I am so happy that one of my daughters managed to escape the UK just before Covid hit and is now much happier in New Zealand. The other daughter is trying to too. But, obviously difficult now.

Here in Thailand, it's bad for the Thai people, i don't know about Pattaya so much as i haven't been able to get into there since February, so i only know what i see on here.

i still think that people like Quinn and me etc are so lucky to be here. It's not so bad for the expats really.

Your dad and people like me etc are so lucky that we lived our lives the way we wanted to.

And at least we still have Jurgen!

We'll see how sensitive this was in a few weeks time, I guess.

Here we go. Wonder if he had praised Pfizer vaccine ( which is supposedly the most efficient against Delta) if that was what he got.

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/piers-morgan-tests-positive-covid-19-153313039.html

Piers Morgan has shared he recently tested positive for COVID-19 and believes he caught the Delta variant at London's Wembley Stadium during the Euros final earlier this month.

The 56-year-old journalist, who has received both doses of the Astra-Zeneca vaccine, had a ticket to the England vs. Italy game that saw a number of fans break into the stadium to watch the match.

"My confidence that the event would be 'COVID-safe,' had disintegrated," Morgan shares in Mail On Sunday. "It was turning into an unregulated free-for-all."

The former Good Morning Britain host said he began to feel ill two days after England's defeat and took a lateral flow test, which was positive. A follow-up PCR test then also returned a positive result.

He writes his symptoms included fever, cold sweats, coughing, and "alarming" chest pains, although they have now faded.

"This is definitely the roughest I've felt from any illness in my adult life, BUT, as I slowly come out the other side, coughing and spluttering, I'm still here — unlike so many millions around the world who've lost their lives to COVID in this pandemic," he adds.

Morgan credits his survival to being vaccinated.

"For that, I owe a heartfelt debt of thanks to the brilliant scientists up in Oxford who created the Astra-Zeneca vaccine with such astonishing speed," he writes.

So what do you reckon PD, could it now be 2023 before those that are 'pining' for a return to Pattaya are allowed back in?

I suspect that Pattaya won't reopen as we know it before 2023.   But even if fully vaccinated folk are allowed back in without other red tape there still won't be too many people here.  But those pining for a return should be back.  The question for mongers is even if fully vaccinated are you comfortable with the heavy breathing of intimacy?

The good news is that the 7 day moving average of new infections has peaked and is headed downward for the 4th Wave but is part of the 3rd Bar Closure.  Think this can be attributed to both the "lockdown" and vaccine rollout.  When we ring in the New Year it's quite possible that 50% of Thailand will be fully vaccinated.

The bad news is that daily cases are still 1700% more than at the height of the 2nd Bar Closure and we are probably looking at December to get below 1000 new cases a day (higher than the peak of the 2nd Bar Closure).

That’s the thing with all this, every time we think we see an end to it all and light at the end of the tunnel things get pushed back to a later date alas.  I had half hoped to get back for a visit early next year, but the end of 2022 looks more realistic at this juncture.  Being quiet doesn’t really bother me.  Have many long term residents headed home have you noticed?

BANGKOK, Aug 25 (Reuters) - As Thailand struggles with its worst coronavirus outbreak yet, researchers in the country have developed a machine to squeeze out COVID-19 vaccine doses more efficiently and optimise lower-than-expected supplies.

Using a robotic arm, the "AutoVacc" system can draw 12 doses of the AstraZeneca (AZN.L) vaccine in four minutes from a vial, according to researchers at Chulalongkorn University, who made the machine that has been used at the university's vaccination centre since Monday.

That is up 20% from the standard 10 doses drawn manually, they said. The machine only works on AstraZeneca multi-dose vials currently and labels show each vial can provide 10 to 11 doses.

"The machine guarantees with accuracy that we can gain an extra 20% from each vaccine vial - from 10 to 12 doses," said Juthamas Ratanavaraporn, the lead researcher of the team at the university's Biomedical Engineering Research Center."The extra 20% that we get means that if we have AstraZeneca for 1 million people, this machine can increase the number of doses to 1.2 million people," said Juthamas.

While some health workers using low dead space syringes (LDSS) that aim to reduce wastage can draw up to 12 doses per vial, it requires manpower and a high level of skill, she said.

"This could drain a lot of the health workers' energy. They would have to do this every day for many months," Juthamas said.

Thailand had kept COVID-19 largely under control for much of the pandemic, but more virulent variants like Delta have sent cases and deaths soaring since April, ramping up pressure on authorities to increase the pace of vaccinations.

It's being reported here in UK that Thailand is about to be added to the 'Red List', requiring travellers returning from next Monday to quarantine in Government approved hotels for 10 days, at a cost of £2,285 (about 102,000 Baht).

This is likely to severely curtail any possible UK tourism to the Phuket sandbox.

Thank god for Sweden Seven. i guess that you realise how lucky you have been to live there

The number of deaths in Sweden reached 145 for every 100,000 people during the pandemic. That's three times more than in Denmark, eight times more than in Finland, and almost 10 x more than in Norway.

Sweden's excess mortality in 2020 was  7.7%, higher than other Nordic countries. Norway for example reported no excess deaths in 2020.

However:

Sweden's excess mortality in 2020 was 'only' 7.7% compared to Spain (18.1%), and Belgium's was 16.2%.

So: was Sweden's corona approach successful or not? Or is the jury still out?

Yes, I'd say so. No lockdowns, schools open, no masks, life went on. You can't really compare countries like this as the demographics are quite different.

Priti Patel could suspend visas from countries that refuse to take back illegal migrants

Co-operate with deportations or face visa penalties, UK tells other countries

https://www.yahoo.com/news/co-operate-deportations-face-visa-105957725.html

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's interior minister will impose visa penalties on countries that do not co-operate with deportations of their own citizens, under plans announced by the British government on Friday.

The "Nationality and Borders Bill" will give the government the power to suspend visas entirely, impose a 190 pound ($261) surcharge to come to Britain, or increase visa processing times for countries who refuse to take back their own citizens.

"We rightly expect our international partners to work with us to remove those who have no right to be in the UK, such as dangerous foreign national offenders," interior minister Priti Patel said in a statement.
