t's not Ebola OR the Black Plague, yet the world has SHUT DOWN.  I still think that many more will suffer from this world lock down than would if we just let er rip.  It's nature. Life cannot be guaranteed. Even a 5% loss of life world wide would not put a DENT in the over population problem.  THAT will end up killing millions more eventually, tho WE might not be here to see it.

bang on JSG...bang on. agree 100%

nobody has ever been bothered about these perfectly natural flu things before, but now thanks to media madness initially... there's so much over-panicing about Covid, just another flu virus... nasty but natural.

Jeez... you've only got to read some of the coronavirus stuff on here. Panic stations.

I'm beginning to think that people are welcome to the world they are helping to create through fear . Don't worry about the families starving and shattered, the penniless in the shop doorways, Those with no food on the table.... hey! at least i never got Covid!

wait for covid to go... along comes the next one... there we go again. Madness.

Sweden stands firm on face masks as Anders Tegnell refuses to copy other countries' strategy

https://www.yahoo.com/news/sweden-stands-firm-face-masks-163057217.html

Dr Anders Tegnell, the country's state epidemiologist, told the Daily Telegraph that he did not expect the Public Health Agency of Sweden to follow Norway, Finland and Denmark and drop its opposition to masks when it recommends new measures to Sweden's government at the start of next month.

"The main risk, I think, is that people will think: 'okay, I'm wearing a face mask. I don't need to take these other precautions'," he said, saying his agency believed social distancing and self-isolation of the sick were "much more important".

"There is now a continuous and even increased spread in a number of countries who implemented face masks, " he said.

"There is a belief that if you just have face masks, you can forget about everything else, you can run your subway with full trains and so on."

"....said that the different approach Sweden had taken was best explained by the unusual independence of its government agencies."

"In the other Nordic countries, politicians often have a stronger role than the experts at public health agencies." Frode Forland, Dr Tegnell's Norwegian counterpart, told the Telegraph he believed Dr Tegnell had "a valid argument" against face masks.

"We've been stressing that it's still much more effective to keep distance than to wear a face mask," he said. "If you keep one metre's distance, the reduction of risk of infection is about 80 per cent, but if you wear a face mask it's about 40 per cent."

The last part is why I wouldn't be in a rush to hop on a plane with 300 mask wearers now.

3 recommendations  keep being repeated over here:

-Wash your hands.

-Avoid crowds.

-Avoid new contacts.

Hard to do that on a charter plane.

Those who ignore history have a tendency to repeat the same mistakes. The Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 lasted about 2 years and had 4 waves. It was estimated to have infected 500 million people which was about 1/3 of the world's population and around 50 million deaths. There is more information about this on various websites, but the Center of Disease Control is one of the more reliable ones (unless you are a conspiracy theorist believer).

It is instructional to look at what happened back then, particularly for those who think COVID-19 is just a "nasty flu" and should be allowed to run its course.

Professor Kim Woo Joo infectious disease specialist from Korea University Guro Hospital has been interviewed a few times about COVID - 19. His insights about the disease are quite valuable.

While the interviews are in Korean, the subtitles are in English, just click on the "CC" box to turn the subtitles on (will turn on a red underline).

I must say I agree that Sweeden really did get it right especially when followed by the next news also by the Daily Mail which is about as dismal as it gets .

Covid will be present ‘FOREVER’ and UK population will need ‘repeated vaccinations’, warns SAGE scientist who says another national lockdown is 'possible' but 'local' ones more likely.

Just saw this piece, and I agree.

Even as international criticism of his tactics mounted, Mr Tegnell remained calm. Again and again he repeated that there was no point in panicking, no point in making crowd-pleasing gestures and no point in committing economic suicide.

Contrast that with Britain’s politicians, floundering around like drunkards at closing time, flip-flopping on policy and constantly being dragged into ever more stringent measures to appease the public hysteria.

According to Sebastian Rushworth, an American-born doctor in a Stockholm A&E department, he hasn’t seen a single Covid-19 patient in a month: ‘Basically,’ he writes, ‘Covid is in all practical senses over and done with in Sweden.’ So should Britain have followed the Swedish example?

UK

The death rate has been declining for months — a 95 per cent fall since the peak in April. Coronavirus casualties are now six times lower than deaths from flu and pneumonia. In the week to July 31, just 2.2 per cent of deaths in England and Wales were caused by Covid.

There’s no reason, in other words, why Britain’s politicians can’t change the record — and they must do so fast, even if it disrupts their precious holidays.

For too long we’ve been ruled by paranoia. But economic logic and sheer common sense dictate that we can’t remain paralysed for a minute longer.

The truth is that for many of us, the last few months have been one long holiday from reality. But the summer is almost over and the economy is on life-support. It’s time we got back to work.

Interesting thing Tel about one hour after the SAGE so called expert made this statement, the head of the WHO stated he was "very confident" that Covid will be totally gone in less than two years!!!! All of them just vying for 5 minutes of fame IMO, which is why I now ignore everything I read or hear.

Fare point my friend and accurate, I keep abreast of the current Covid news as I very much enjoy the chin wag with good friends here on the forum, the personal side of me at Home is that I do not dwell on any Covid news as it is and will always be ever changing and as you point out there will always be the oppossite news on the subject. :drinks:

Jesus Christ! 3 people out of how many that have supposedly caught Covid? big deal.

It is a big deal because it means any immunity via a vaccine to it will most likely not be like measels/ mumps (entire lifetime) but for a much shorter duration so that means multiple vaccinations over time.

Most people can do the lifetime vaccine but people are lazy and can't be bothered to do a vaccine every few months? And ofcourse you have anti vaxxers. So there will be dumbasses who are carriers for not just a few months but maybe for years like the flu.

https://www.magic.co.nz/home/news/2020/08/nz-should-move-to-similar-approach-to-covid-as-sweden--who-speci.html

On the show today Ryan had an amazing interview with Dr David Nabarro, a special envoy of The World Health Organisation (one of six) specializing in COVID-19.

Dr Nabarro had plenty of praise for the New Zealand Government and the NZ people for reacting quickly and without hesitation to the initial threat of COVID-19, but says that now we should be looking to alternative methods of moving forward in our response to COVID-19.

https://loyaltylobby.com/2020/08/28/thailand-eyes-november-tourism-arrivals-under-prison-like-conditions-thai-airways-plans-to-operate-12-flights-per-month/

I like this Sebastian Powell's style He gets straight to the point, the whole article puts into words far better than I can How I see the whole future trip situation as being fruitless unless as we have said a Vaccine comes into play.

The plans for returning tourists aren’t all that rosy though:

… Areas highly damaged by the pandemic and in need of urgent relief will be prioritised, he said. He mentioned, for instance, the resort island of Phuket where people both agree with a proposal to let foreign tourists in and those who disagree. He said small groups of tourists will be allowed to come in under a sandbox concept (pilot project).

Under this concept, visitors will have to be tested for Covid-19 both before they leave their countries and upon arriving in Thailand, he said.

And when in Thailand, they will be required to stay only in areas designated for this tourism promotion programme to ensure their presence won’t compromise public health, he said. …

This is absolutely laughable. Who would voluntarily undergo such restrictive measures to be put up at some random, isolated resort? The pricing for this arrangement won’t be cheap either so that rules out most factors why tourists have so far found Thailand to be a worthwhile destination to visit: Affordability and flexibility. If someone wants to spend a lot of money then they go to the Maldives.

Interesting to see the extent that The Chinese dominated tourism in 2019.

Yes when you seen what used to be the never ending or so it seemed Chinese tour buses and the guides with their flags on a tall pole for the tour to not get lost it kind of puts it all into perspective.

I doubt Linda bar is one of those designated areas.

I wouldn't. No way.

Then again people have travelled to tourist ghettos all through August only to park their ass in a boring all inclusive resort area , never leave the facility during their 2 weeks holiday, only mingle with other tourists from same hometown. Theres an ass for every seat, I guess.  Not my idea of holiday.

On top of that, risking getting covid (at least for now. Why not wait another 4 months?) on the flights and spread it around once home.

Here's a perfect example of exactly what you are warning about Seven.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8680727/Furious-passenger-TUI-plane-Zante-hits-airline.html

It comes as Dr Lowe confirmed the coronavirus outbreak on the flight and admitted there were several cases in Wales linked to Zante.

Dr Lowe told Today: 'In the last week we've had about 30 cases in Wales that have come back from Zante.

'Different flights on different days staying in different locations.

'These are confirmed positive cases and we're expecting that number to rise.'

Avoid crowds and new contacts are recurring guidelines over here. Oh well..

On a happier note, first quarter of 2021 vaccine will be offered here.

The advice is simple yet getting the covidiots to follow it is almost impossible.   The Vaccine is indeed good news .

https://loyaltylobby.com/2020/08/30/emirates-advertises-sells-flights-to-thailand-from-september-1-thai-consulate-reacts-with-denial-post/

Emirates has created controversy this week as they advertised the resumption of flights to/from Bangkok while even selling tickets on these services despite the continued entry ban.

The Airlines must be desperate , even the one I consider to be the best which is Qatar Airlines are repeatedly sending me emails aking me to book now and offering me prices such as 421 Pounds to Bangkok return yet knowing full that ordinary tourist travel is not allowed into Thailand.

On a seperate note reading this one this Morning made me think of the expression  "No shit Sherlock" talk about stating the obvious !

https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/tourism/bank-of-thailand-issues-stark-warning-over-ongoing-ban-on-foreign-tourists

The Bank of Thailand has issued a sombre warning that the ongoing ban on foreign tourists returning to Thailand may have an even worse impact next year.

Is there a prediction on how effective the vaccine will be? Numbers here go as low as 50% effective. 50% is a hell of a lot of better than nothing but won't really put me at ease. Plus 20% or so of Americans are so stupid they won't take a vaccine as god or some other deity of there choice will save them.

Would you guy's consider traveling on a 50% chance?

Hopefully Trump won't pull a Putin or Chinese approach and approve a vaccine before phase 3 trials are complete/start. Although in China I guess just health care works volunteered (cough) to get the vaccine.
