How do the bars survive?

This low season has been a killer for many bars and the girls. A reciprocal bell ringing is usually done for friends bars; if your previous night has been ok then you ring the bell at your mates bar to wish them chok dee for the night. This puts 50 baht in the girls purses and gives your mate a breather.

Doris seldom has her music system on despite paying an annual fee of 8k just to have the right to play music. Other bars blast away regardless not acknowledging they have no customers as it's too fucking loud.

A careful eye is also kept on the wellbeing of the girls; Doris knows who is doing well and who need help so she will make sure they have food and as said before, Ladydrinks & tips are paid up in full at the end of the night. It's a good pitch for the ladies and they usually do ok though as usual are subject to external influences from friends & sages.

One girl was shy and didn't like coming out from behind the bar but still managed 22k in tips & salary per month; a yakking friend who had fuck all squared got her to leave and now she is out of the loop. Doris helps the girls send money to family via the big K app and surprisingly enough they often send some back when their girl's rent is due and she has had no cussamers.

Customers...that's us. Oddly New has had tremendous support from the BM's old 'n new & guys who are just walk ins. They find the bar, like the location, enjoy the company & craic and their holiday. She knows and appreciates she's been lucky in this respect, knows all by name and is genuinely pleased when her old friends walk in the bar. She reciprocates with the shots/killer pool drinks and is not mercenary with the bin...unless it's mine.

I think this is a bug bear of many of us, especially guys who have been on the scene a long time and just want to chill and chat.  I passed a bar the other night and the screeching shit they were passing for music actually made me quicken my step to get away from it.  Even in TJs last week, the volume was just a tad louder than usual for a while and made conversation a bit of a struggle with anyone that was not right beside you.

Buds...we all have them. B)

Fellas we've known over the years, perhaps some more than others but good guys with a common interest, not just in LB's but the perhaps the communality that Pattaya brings. We had a party last year & Davie Duke remarked that it was probably the first time we'd all been in the same place from the old La Bamba days 10 years previous. Donny, Jimslim, Bigtel, Bumblebee, XYwotsit, Kliome, Streetwalker and a few that currently escape me as I've been at the wine. I also have met many other guys along the way who are absolute diamonds. New has her buds too...Sonya most nights, Paeng and a few other girls like Emmy from Sensations, Rin, Mon, Jasmine, June from BKK and many others...all pop in for a few scoops and to say hi.

The bar is a good sounding board as a catch up with friends, advice or explanation or even recollection of the previous nights events. It's a passing sounding board on the way to a party or a last drink call in with your catch of the night on the way to yer scratcher.

Fond memories of Hoot falling asleep in the ST rooms at Ezy waking up the next day at noon frightening the life out of Lita, SLBT wearing a kilt (no pants) farting & following through in Pooks Swanhouse, Terry the plumber banging Cindy up the back of the minibus in Ko Chang...can't remember what I did, I'm sure I was a nice boy. :happy0148:

Any hassles with downloaded music?  I guess these days with Spotify playlists there is no real reason to have pirated music.

Was surprised one evening at New Bar to hear Simon & Garfunkel at a very low volume. One of my pet peeves is a bar that won't turn down the volume when me and a mate are the only customers in the joint.  I get that they think that the music will attract passerbyers into the bar but what about taking care of the customers that you already have inside inside the bar?  Some bars, not yours, think that taking care of a customer is asking repeatedly for a ladydrink.  :db:

Our daily yak...^_^

New was pleased to see her familiar & new friends last night, a steady evening & the girls do well with LD's and everyone happy just to relax into it. Ked came over from her bar as it was quiet, she earned 600b in LD's so she now has food & phone mazuma...great girl. Our regular pop in Sonya enjoys playing pool with the girls 'n guys, has a few Heiny's and gets 500b on LD's.

One fella has drinks, BF for Pa but doesn't want to pay bin...next time ye hear of a free bar in Patts please let me know as I & most of Pattaya would be fookin' delighted.

New pays all her bills before they are due, pays the girls every night and doesn't ask for a thing...just our daily yak.

Drugs, Sponsors & Gambling...the Oilyfants in da loom.

Drugs

Not really had any issues so far, if New gets wind of it and they get a warning then the boot. One girl was locked in her room for 3 days by none other than the BiB themselves, her friends were allowed to bring her food. She was warned by them that if she tested positive at any time it was a short pick-up ride to the Monkey House and I don't mean DC's room. :spiteful:

Recently a good regular girl started behaving erratically, New suspected she was smokin' so she's now no longer welcome. it's not only the girls...some dodgy long time Pattaya expats are abusers...New will not serve them and their regular girls who get the stuff for them know not to bring them to her bar.

Sponsors.

Not always a mugs game as many will have you believe. I did it briefly with New, not for a great amount, just enough to pay room and get her on her feet. Once she had the shop & was self sufficient I've never paid her anything in that respect. We've had some stunning girls in the bar who were quickly snatched up & surprisingly & heartwarmingly enough...they left for love.

Their fellas were not big earners and could only pay what they could afford, circa 7k pm. These girls were quickly back in the village and happy to be so, bless them. They've continued with this and one, Por, married her Italian guy. Chok Dee for them.

Another toe-rag got her monthly 25k and blew it on cards the same night. I became swiftly unpopular as I wanted to stop this and tell him the bad news. She left and we've not seen her since. None of my business you might say and you are absolutely right....but I would tell you.

Gambling

Some of the girls are in hock beyond their eyeballs...it's this online Casino or the cards. We had the girls from a bar down the Soi walk by the other night and our girls were asking, 'How much now?" 100k plus seems to be the average, scooters are re-possessed, land confiscated, locked out of rooms...the live for now attitude is negatively pervasive.

So-o,  most of the above ye'll know already but ye don't like what I'm telling ye then please let me know and I'll sa-top. B)

I'm not clued into the drug scene but one friend of mine in the know was saying that about half the girls are users and so are a surprising number of expats with some of them being dealers.  IMO, it's not too smart to sell drugs outside your home country unless you have police protection.

But I'm oblivious to most of it and don't think my better half's coworkers, mostly older Issan ladies, are users.  Of course, it's easy to spot the high as a kite ladyboy but I generally don't clock the social users.   But when a hong nam has a very strange smell that's neither shit nor weed, I figure someone has been smoking ice or something similar.

Blimey. I’d imagine you could write a book with all the interesting and dark tales you could tell. Must bring meaning to your life to run a Pattaya ladyboy brothel with a Thai partner. Go on then.

Not at all, most of it goes over ma baldie heid or I just plain fuggetaboutit. ^_^

By the way it's not a brothel it's only a wee open beer bar with no shenanigans; I don't run it, Doris does that very well without any interference from stupid appearance. Last night all the girls were barfined apart from Bom & Nam. You can ask me who with but I'll never tell...as i don't bloody know.

Interesting read Petesie - thanks! Running a bar is obviously a lot more than just ordering the stock and sitting by the bar. Looking after the staff and helping them with their problems seems to play a big part. Well done to New and the other bar owners who take care of their staff.

One thing I never understood is how freelancers could earn enough from just ladydrinks to pay daily bills, food and rent. As I understood it the girls get 40-50 bt from each ladydrink, which I think is very reasonable for some pleasant company. I don't understand why some guys complain about buying ladydrinks.

But if I'm correct on the 40-50 bt cut for a ladydrink, the girls you mention above would have to drink at least 10 lds. I'd be on the floor if I had drunk that much alcohol.

So do they have non-alcoholic lds? I'm ok with buying lds but do sometimes feel guilty that I might be wrecking the girls' livers.

On occasion some may tie one on but generally they pace themselves, pointless being wrecked if yer angling for a barfine. :rolleye0012:

They receive 50thb per drink plus a share of any tips. Given the daily wage in LoS is circa 300 baht getting 500 to go to the bar and have a drink with your friends ain't a bad deal.

Not every night will be a good earner for them so they have to balance the good with the bad.

indeed Duke, good results for you and us, well done  Man Utd. i really could do without the totally useless world club thing coming soon though...

Actually while i'm here Duke, i was thinking about you recently, "why?" you no doubt ask..... well i'll tell you.

You're from Stockport aren't you? Funnily enough i used to work in Hannover back in the Early 80s with a guy from Stockport. His name was Steve. The worst snorer i have ever heard but that's a bit besides the point. As is most of this post i guess but sometimes it's good to ramble on.

So.. do you know Steve? i reckon that you probably do as there are possibly very few people that live in Stockport, or are at least willing to admit to it!
I'm sure that you must know him.... I've seen Coronation Street... every body knows everyone in that part of the world.

Some of you American chaps reading this are possibly baffled... "corrie st?.  what the hell is that?" well.... i'll help you here... it's an english TV soap opera... been playing since before Kennedy was shot, or just after. To help you visualise it...just think "Deliverance" in half-hour episodes but without the Banjo's.

It used to be based around a pub called the Queen VIc or something, owned by 'Dirty Den' and his Missus Ena Sharples.

You guys are probably wondering what i'm talking about... don't worry, so am I. Just a bit of English culture for you on a pretty nippy Thailand morning. I confess though sometimes my memory goes a bit haywire. Corrie was never the same after Albert Tatlock shot J.R.
Anyway to get back on topic before the Moddy fellows shout at me, Lady drinks! i'm pretty sure that Dirty Den once bought Elsie Tanner one in the 'Rover's Vic' or whatever the pub was called... I'm still convinced that he was trying to get in her pants.

And Ladyboys... must admit that i was never very sure about  Victoria Principal... looks too much like 'lily'.

Actually Elsie was very well cast. She looks like a bar manager should.(well female anyway).

actually Woodie... i wouldn't have a clue!  i just prattle on sometimes. i doubt i've seen for than 3-4 episodes of Corrie since it started back in when '64?

i just know the names is all. What i know about television other than Father Ted perhaps,  could be written on the back of Geoff Carters one remaining brain cell.

thank god..no 'sad' alternative to likes on this forum Duke !

5555... promotion Duke is all. actually though i doubt that i'm in there more than 3 nights a week me not being a drinker. or a monger actually. Said it many times, i don't go into the Katty because it's a ladyboy bar, i'd probably still go if it was GG...  main reason for me is that it's by and large non-hassle, and Emmy is a friend. That's it really.

teya 2020?...  Over to the artwork department!  me, at my age i can't think past the next cup of coffee....

no worries duke about the sad emoji being unavailable... i never use them , don't like them. so i'll give you a like then!

and be nice to me.... i don't talk about the other vlogger fellow anymore!

and apologies to Geoff Carter too for the one brain cell gibe... obviously he still has 2, he can still walk, and beg for money.....:sad0116:

so...you don't know steve then?

So how do the bars survive?

A bar can thrive if you give the customer a great experience.   Last night TJ's was packed with customers.  Guess what is a bit unusual is that TJ's has two groups of customers, the mongers and the civilians.  Why should civilians drink in a crappy Naklua bar when you can have the TJ experience?  Good music, entertainment, attractive ladyboys, no pressure, and most of all FUN.

I think to survive in these bad times a bar must have a USP.  It might be a popular owner that has lots of mates.  Many ladyboy bars fall into this category.    Or a bar where the regulars feel it's their clubhouse and don't want to be anywhere else, a proper local so to speak such as Katty Bar.  Could be a joint like the Windmill where guys are eating pussy.  Or a place where the girls are rocking out with their cocks out where customers can enjoy competing in the ladyboy slolom using 6 inch ski poles.

I've noticed that many successful bars are open on two sides. TJ's, Triangle on Chaiyapoon, Billibong on LK Metro.  Of course attractive girls go a long, long, way. But if I had to boil down what makes a great bar into just one word it would be FUN.

that is possibly the politest moddy warning to get back on topic that i've ever seen Pdogg ! no wonder i love this forum...

what is USP? something selling point?

you're right i think, it must be worrying for the LB bar owners sometimes to be so dependent on a specific customer base, if the said base starts to dwindle for whatever reasons.

it does seem that TJs either by accident or design has got it all sussed out.

Unique!! got it.

Just stick a Unique at the beginning, and two outta three ain’t bad...   And PD is correct, fun plays such a part in the experience.  There is just so much happening at TJs all the time that it’s easy to miss incidents.  One moment last night summed up this fun factor, or bit of craic as we say back home.   The night was winding down, the girls had paired off with customers or were just chilling after an eventful evening.
Deedy and some others were playing pool and joking about. Over the speakers the sound of Proud Mary began to to roll, and as the tempo increased, suddenly Deedy was Tina Turner, strutting around and doing all the right moves and facial expressions.  Totally off the cuff spontaneity and very entertaining.
