Music That Stands The Test Of Time

Recommended Posts

Cole Porter wrote Let's Do It in 1928 so it's 90 years old.  Probably the best know version is Ella's from 1956.

It has sexually charged lyrics but done in a clever way.  My favorite line is "Folks in Siam do it; think of Siamese twins.

Porter's original lyrics were racist and as times changed it was replaced by "Birds do it bees do it, even educated fleas do it" which actually fits the theme of the tune better than the original,

"Chinks do it, Japs do it,
up in Lapland little Laps do it"

Here's Billie Holiday singing he original lyrics.

1977-Out of The Blue!!!!

My brother was a big ELO fan back then.  He would buy a new album and immediately record it to a cassette and not touch it again.  So he has some mint conditioned albums and  covers from 40 years ago in his collection.  And yea some wonderful songs in their collection, Steppin’ Out is one of my favorites.  Sang it one drunken night with  Orgasmadsict in a karaoke bar in Hua Hin, good times.

What makes a song stand the test of time? In the past, it’s a question that we’ve only been able to answer through wild guesswork, based on a spin through the dial on a golden oldie radio station, or a look through the bargain bin at one of the big music chains. Now, though, we’ve got some empirical date thanks to Polygraph. The data-driven storytelling site has crunched together masses of Spotify data to give us a glimpse of the music that has endured over the years via some insightful analysis and lovely graphs.

Say Polygraph:
Until recently, it was impossible to measure the popularity of older music. Billboard charts and album sales only tell us about a song’s popularity at the time of its release. But now we have Spotify, a buffet of all of music, new and old. Tracks with fewer plays are fading into obscurity. And those with more plays are remaining in the cultural ether.

Nirvana are huge outliers
With over 50 million listens on Spotify, Smells Like Teen Spirit is by far the best-loved song of the 1990s – a whole 15 million ahead of its closest competitor, Iris by Goo Goo Dolls.
