A British tourist accused of spray painting his name on a historic landmark in Thailand could face 10 years in prison.

Local police said Lee Furlong, 23, from Liverpool, has admitted defacing Tha Phae Gate in the city of Chiang Mai.

Video appears to show a man spraying "Scouser Lee" on the gate, part of which dates back to the 13th Century.

Supt Teerasak Sriprasert said Mr Furlong would be charged with "vandalising an archaeological site".

A Canadian woman, Brittney Schneider, has also been arrested and charged with vandalism for allegedly adding her first initial to graffiti on the gate.

"They will face no more than 10 years' jail [and/or] a fine of no more than a million baht (about £23,555)," Supt Sriprasert said.

"They admitted to the crime, saying they did it because of the thrill and they were also a little bit drunk."

Animal rights activists say they have uncovered a “bestiality club” operating near the northern Thai capital of Chiang Mai, after an investigation lasting more than a year.

A man accused of running the club has been questioned by police after Watchdog Thailand provided video evidence of dogs being sexually abused. He denies the claims.

The watchdog claims the bestiality club used the Line chat application to invite people to join the “Bobo” group, for a fee of 200 baht (US$6). For that price members could watch videos of others sexually abusing dogs.

Once a month, members had the option to pay extra to meet and abuse dogs. They could choose between 10 dogs to abuse.

A backpacker who daubed “Scousse Lee” on a historic fortress in Thailand will celebrate the New Year back at home in Britain after friends and family paid his £2,400 fine.

Lee Furlong, 23, was caught on CCTV vandalising the 800-year-old Tha Phae Gate in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, in October.

Police quickly tracked him down and locked him up. Furlong, originally from Liverpool, was heavily mocked over the mindless graffiti attack where he managed to misspell “Scouse”.

He had faced the grim prospect of ten years in a Thai prison before his family agreed to stump up the money.
