Laughing Gas Farang Drug Of Choice On Phi Phi

It seems the drug of choice for young farangs on Koh Phi Phi is laughing gas.  8P

Kids do the darndest things.

A huge row has broken out on the Thai holiday island of Phi Phi over a surge in tourists using nitrous oxide - laughing gas - a form of hallucination that is about to be banned in Britain.

And if it is being inhaled in large quantities on Phi Phi, then young travellers are almost certainly also using it on Phuket, Samui and in other holiday destinations in Thailand - a country that has a zero tolerance for drugs and packed jails to prove it.

''These people just lie on the footpaths, laughing,'' said one resident today on Phi Phi, a popular rites-of-passage destination, where people in their 20s from all over the world come to party.

The gas, inhaled in balloon form, is available at 200 baht a pop on Phi Phi, with no limit on availability - because police appear uncertain whether nitrous oxide is a banned drug in Thailand or not.

Nitrous oxide would not be a banned drug as it is used as an aesthetic agent, commonly in some dental procedures and short surgical procedures where patients go home shortly afterwards. In addition it is used for some automotive applications to boost the engine horsepower (nitrous).

It's quite common on Phangan Island, also.

200B a balloon, same as in Phi Phi

Makes your head feel a little light and dizzy, basically a headache for a few seconds; hardly worth 6 dollars for 4 or 5 hits.

We were doing that stuff in the 80's, they were called "whippits" back then....you can also get the same effect from sucking on the top of a whipped cream canister before the cream comes out.

yeah, with a gizmo to pierce the whippet and fill a balloon on the end. Whippets were used as propellant for whipped cream by caterers it seems, we got ours from a restraunt supply store. That article is bull if you ask me, author probably never went there or interviewed anyone as the ''These people just lie on the footpaths, laughing,'' thing is silly. I mean really. Even back in the day we never laughed from the stuff. Maybe the many many bong hits, but not whippets. Not really what I'd call a high, more like a light short buzz.
