One that has held my attention for decades, including exploring it at some length in my novel The Theory of Relativity. I have no definitive direct answer, but can offer a few thoughts on the subject. One, we are suckers by nature [no pathetic puns intended]. Being mammals, it is the way we come into the world and spend our neonate years. While some may think it is stretching a long bow to relate maternal nipple to cock, I think there is a biological history there that must explain at least part of the attraction. While we vary individually in our adult preferences for sucking, some of us are deeply into it, with other nipple substitutes such as toes, fingers, earlobes being well known targets. Of course we do vary, and it is not everybody's cup of tea to get into all these esoterica. But for those of us who do, it is said - though I've seen no research - that there is also a correlation with general oral preference behaviours such as eating & drinking. In other words, for those of us who are into it, there is a distinct enjoyment of having things in our mouths. At risk of sounding a bit corny, there is then a kind of security blanket about it.
