The bars are obliged to close to allow staff the time to vote, and to prevent them from getting drunk and missing their opportunity to vote. Rrright. So: Show of hands please: how many staff are eligible to vote? Er.......thats NONE then. And, show of hand again: how many customers are eligible to vote? Er......thats NONE again then. So why the FACK do we have to close? I'd bet every penny i have that if the landlords were forced to sacrifice a day's rent every time, the law would be changed pdq ! And, moving on to the election itself: (You couldn't make this stuff up!) The likely winner will be the gangster Pian, who was disqualified and yellow-carded a year ago for "electoral irregularities" (read Bribery). A year has passed. You guessed it: Pian's standing again! His only opponent is a well educated, wealthy, middle-aged thai lady who seems to genuinely want change on the island. This has got Pian worried (might interfere with his tuk-tuk cartels, amongst other things!) So the bribe per vote has been upped to 5,000 Bt !! (Yes thats 100 quid sterling!!) Thats how important winning is to him! I'm hoping that commonsense prevails and the lure of 2 weeks wages proves unsuccessful. But i;m not optimistic. This is Thailand. duke007 Posted March 30, 2014 Author Share Posted March 30, 2014 Leaving Pattaya tomorrow (Saturday 28th March) to return to the island. Very mixed visit this time with Patts very very quiet. In fact so quiet i'm amazed at the indifference by so many girls to this walking barfine. And i'm the easiest touch in the world for a ladydrink too, yet in some bars i must have been The Invisible Man ! Their phones must have built-in ATMs, the devotion they were getting! So much so, i am for the first time in years (read ever!), bringing unspent money home with me!! Oh well, i'll start planning for a couple of days out in Bangkok. Pattaya's loss will be Bangkok's gain. Just hope NingNong was jumping all over the C & D girls while i was away, when they reach for their cursed jabby-dabby phones. Poor kid looked like the proverbial "rabbit in the headlights" as she told me "I'm going to eat all his body!" The 2 candidates are the crook who was impeached for bribery and corruption, and barred from office for (just) one year. The biggest gangster on the island. And the other is a wealthy lady whose family she feels haven't been getting enough of the treasure. Of the two, i hope the lady wins, but the gangster is offering a bribe of 5,000 baht per vote, so i'm not optimistic. My apologies to the long-suffering tourists who are being inconvenienced again by Thailand's absurd political rules, but who will still pay for everything. Its high time Thailand started to give some consideration to its visitors. How many people are eligible to vote, from the bar? One - NingNong, and she's away in Sweden.
