Three somewhat obscure movies, everyone should see

Lefty

Recommended Posts

Me and old Kahuna talk off and on about movie recommendations to one another. Recently, he turned me on to 2 movies, I'd never heard of, that turned out to be great. Both from director Guy Ritchie. So, I scanned a list of all his movies and found one more and after seeing it suggested it back to Kahuna,. Anyone who likes movies such as Tarantino or the Coen Bros put out, will probably like these movies.

If you are not English, subtitles would be a good suggestion too. :)

Kahuna ranked them as follows:

Snatch

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snatch_(film)

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lock,_Stock_and_Two_Smoking_Barrels

RocknRolla

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RocknRolla

I would flip flop the top two in my rankings. But all well worth seeing. Anyone else seen any of these movies and have an opinion? I watch a fair amount of movies and until Kahuna mentioned them a couple months ago, I'd no knowledge of any of them.

All three fantastic movies...SNATCH...2000,WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY Guy Ritchie,

Lock,Stock and two smoking barrels was released in 1998

tHEN IN 2008 THE ROCK N ROLLA FOLLOW....WHICH ACCORDING to Guy Ritchie was the first of a trilogy ...that we have to see.

Many people might ask the question...what is a Rockn Rolla? Well is not about drums, drugs,or hospital drips.Theres more than that.

We all like a bit of the good life, some the money, some the drugs, many the ladyboys, the glomour or the fame. Rock n Rolla is different.

A real Rock n Rolla wants the fucking lot.

Nothing worse than fuckin' Mockney films directed by that fuckin' mockney cunt Guy Twitchy!

Fuckin' Tarantino wants to grow up & stop glamourising piss pots & wankers too!

Thank you brother Lung.....guy ritchie, definitely on my hunt down and kill list.

Lock stock was good entertainment, but all the characters were stereotypes. The black gangster was good tho'.

Snatch was ok,but I thought Brad Pitt carried it,without him it would have been a B movie, imo.

Definitely agree about Tarantino, couple of decent films, the rest shite.Too far up his own arse.

I'm afraid I'm going to neg Ritchie too.....LS&2SB was pretty entertaining all right, I remember Snatch being ok, but not as good. Last week I had the misfortune to sit through "Revolver", stunning in it's awfulness & pretension even with the always watchable Statham & Ray Liotta in it. It was actually a good idea, similar to Fight Club in some themes, but he relied a lot on tricky & showy editing instead of character development that just alienated & confused things.

I didn't know that Ritchie did the new Sherlock Holmes movies... are they any good?

Tarantino, the Coen Bros, and Sam Peckinpah are my all time favorite directors. Which of QTs movies would you call shit? His new one coming out Xmas day 2012 looks like another fine movie.

To me, while I did like it, the only QT movie that maybe considered less than superb was Death Proof.

I haven't seen Sherlock Holmes, generally not into him, so ain't been a priority to watch it.

In fact the only three Ritchie movies I've ever seen are the 3 aforementioned. I really enjoyed every single one of them, though would still place him a notch below the Coens or QT.

I guess we all look for and enjoy different things in a movie.

Crabby at Corner Bar and me used to talk movies a lot and we couldn't have been much more opposed on what was good movie fare or not.

He said Pulp Fiction was the worst most overrated movie ever. Yet he also said he walked out after 15 minutes and demanded a refund of his ticket cost. Before I'd call any movie the worst ever I like to think I'd watch more than the first 15 minutes. Crabby's idea of a good movie was Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc. Either of those would bore me to tears. But as we say in the old country...DSFDF.

All great movies Lefty.

If you like Snatch you may find this quite funny.

That was very well done, and while I do like Snatch, like I'd said, I am however probably the least fan of Star Wars you'll ever find. I saw it once, about ten yrs after it came out and it was ok, but never wanted to see it again, and I don't care to see either sequel. Also I have no interest in Star Trek or any other spaceman spaceship movies. The old TV show back in the 60s, Lost in Space, was pretty fun though. I saw Avatar in it's entirety once at Ave Mall with a lb friend who wanted to see it. It was ok, but the plot was basically a tired worn out premise just set in a futuristic venue. The invading hordes of white settlers stealing land from the indigenous peoples. Just the American west idea all over again, but with some really spiffy special effects to entertain the younger simpler minds in the audience. Cameron is a big special effects guy so it was to be expected. . The one good part of the movie was Zoe Saldana, but all the makeup made her basically unrecognizable. I much more enjoyed seeing her lesbian scenes in After Sex with Mila Kunis. The one scene of them kissing on the floor in the library was better than all of Star Wars, Star Trek, Dancing With the Stars, The Stars Come out At Night, or any other Star movie in their combined entirety.

I accept being in the minority on Avatar what with it and Titanic being the two biggest grossing movies of all time. Don't like Titanic either. Heck it isn't like we don't know what's going to happen. Giant ship, supposedly unsinkable, hits an iceberg, it sinks and many people die. Hardly a spellbinding plot there. But many enjoyed seeing the overrated DeCaprio being all lovey dovey with the overly pale skinned Kate Winslet.

I don't like most Sci Fi I guess you could say. Don't like most horror either. I'm going to go out on a limb and perhaps derive myself of some movie pleasure and say any and all of the Saw movies after reading their plot outlines, are all movies I will never ever watch. I won't do like Crabby though and call any of them the worst movie ever made, like he did to Pulp Fiction while only watching about 15 minutes. That would have basically been the first restaurant scene length with Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer.

Before I could objectively say Saw is the worst movie ever made, I'd have to sit through it one time, and I do not want to indelibly etch those images into my brain merely for the sake of an objective movie review. So, I'll just say the plot outline indicates strongly to me that it is not my cup o' tea.

Two horror movies I did like. Tremors I actually like very much, and The Shining was pretty good.

I honestly cannot think of any sci fi movie that I considered enjoyable. Maybe one could say Tremors was as much Sci Fi as horror, so in that case it and it's sequels would be the exception.

Back on the old ATS forum, we used to have an English bloke who went by the username of Brick Top. His avatar was a pic of Alan Ford in the black framed glasses. He was always talking about feeding someone to his pigs whenever he got into a heated forum debate about whatever. I never knew what all of that was about back then. Now I do. Even though I am pretty sure he never met her, he was known for being fanatical in his defense of the famous Chompoo. Anyone say something even mildly negative about her, and Brick Top would jump to her defense, and sing her praises to the heavens, while threatening to feed her detractors to his pigs. 555.. I know he'd been to LOS before though, because he talked about often visiting Sally's Bar. I cannot remember his real name, but back then I knew it and I asked Tim if he knew of this guy. He did, and there used to a bunch of snap shots of various patrons on the wall and he pointed out Brick Top's pic to me. That was about 2003. At first I kind of liked Brick Top on the forum but by early 2003 my opinion of him had declined greatly. Not because of his adoration of Chompoo, because I've felt that way about certain lbs over the years. Rather because he was very vocal in his support of the then upcoming invasion of Iraq. We had some heated debates on that topic in late 2002 or so.

I was 100% against it before it happened, and remain to this day 100% certain it was a terrible decision by sock puppet Dubya and his puppet master Dickhead Cheney.

How was that for going off topic and hijacking my own thread? :clapping:

I very much like all 3 of the above and they would appear well in a list of my own favourite films too, if I were to make such a list. The order in which you placed them I would agree with too.

I couldn't care less if other people like the films I like or not, same as with music, I can adore movies or music from any genre if I just happen to like it but often the bulk of likes will fall within certain genres.

Some people think it's only cool to like certain films and you're somehow lacking something if you like certain others. People who adopt that modus operandi I pay no attention to or their opinion. It's always nicer to say what you like rather than be critical of other people's choices for something as simple as being too popular at the box office.

The Kill Bill films to me are particularly bad.I loved Pulp Fiction, even with Bruce Willis in it.Inglorious bastards was actually worse the 2nd time i saw it...everything has to be a blood bath in his films.

The Sherlock films i really enjoyed.Robert downey jnr, terrific actor, quirky plots and great sfx, very funny also.check them out,not your usual sherlock holmes films.

Watched all 3 of them many times Lefty and enjoyed them a lot.

I'm suprised QT gets so much grief - i love his movies. Agree on death proof - QT foot fetish and verbal dribble got the better of him but at the end of the day its a hommage to B grade movies - so maybe its just meant to be a B grader by design. Having said that it's still go those special moments that only QT can deliver.

Inglorious basterds - Sensational - one of the best shot movies i've scene and whilst over the top in parts, it has some of the best acting and direction i've enjoyed in many a year. For those detractors, nearly every scene involving Hans Lander is nothing short of brilliant - it's why he won the academy award - take another look and marvel at the direction when QT is not taking the piss.

QT has a way of making obscure actors into stars and resurrecting the careers of actors who were on the wane. I doubt many Americans, Brits or Aussies ever heard of Christoph Walz before Inglourious Basterds. But he won as Oscar for his role as Hans Landa and from now on whenever one sees him in any role, there will be thoughts of hey, it's Hans Landa. Can't wait to see him in the new QT movie coming out in December, http://en.wikipedia....jango_Unchained

QT also got John Travolta's career back on track with Pulp Fiction and somewhat so too with David Carradine with Kill Bill. Same with Pam Grier in Jackie Brown. He wrote the screenplay as I recall with her in mind.

When I was in Patts, Inglourious Basterds came out. I went to Ave Mall four times to watch it.Took dates with me 3 times. The only one who seemed to really enjoy it was Sonya from Linda Bar. She was getting it, and I could notice her reacting to some of the obscure comments that most Thais would be clueless about. I cannot even remember who the other two were who went with me.

It is my favorite QT movie now.

Azza, Dixon, Flatpack, Panic, and others with good taste: Here are 3 more rather obscure or somewhat forgotten movies I like VERY much, Probably more than the 3 Guy Ritchie movies even. Wondered if you have seen and what your feedback would be on them?

U Turn

http://en.wikipedia....urn_(1997_film)

In Bruges

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Bruges

The Boondock Saints

http://en.wikipedia....Boondock_Saints

That is the order in which I like them by the way, and I think anyone who liked the Guy Ritchie films would also enjoy these. Mr Big Kahuna Burger turned me on to In Bruges. In fact, he was so certain I'd like it and wanted me to see it asap, that in his typically kind manner, he bought a copy and just gave it to me as gift.

U Turn was one I found completely be accident. When I was in the PI in 2010, I bought a DVD that was all Jennifer Lopez movies, something like ten of them. U Turn was one of them although she isn't the main star. That would be Sean Penn. I was blown away with how good I found it to be. As for The Boondock Saints, I do not recall how I came to watch that one, but I really enjoyed it. There is a sequel, but I do not care for it nearly as much. I am trying to think of any sequel that equals the original as I am sitting here now, and I my mind feels as blank as an American middle class Republican Tea Party type as I try to come up with a sequel that possibly equaled the original. The Godfather II I guess is the only one. But, I am not a huge fan, surprisingly, of The Godfather movies. If you asked me what the best mob/gangster movies are, I'd say Miller's Crossing and A Bronx Tale. I do not expect anyone would agree with me, but that's ok.

Well Lefty, I also thought that In Bruges was a terrific little film, really nicely done. I didn't realize it was by Martin McDonagh, he's an Irish playwright that I've happened to see a couple of his plays too!

Never heard of U Turn but per the link the cast looks top shelf & Stone always entertains & challenges so that's def on my list now.

No comment on Boondock Saints  not a favorite... but as an aside there is this little documentary about the Director/writer of Boondock, I think it was done by some of his co producers, that started as a "Behind the Scenes" publicity feature for his next film.

It basically shows this guy thinking he is a genius & God's gift to Hollywood & becoming really, really obnoxious not only to the people who work for him, but he starts saying F*#@ You to the big money people, I think it was the Weinsteins, & what started out as a "behind the scenes" pr film for his 2nd movie turns into this study of a man self destructing & eventually being cut off at the knees by the industry & unable to make that or any other movie again. (I believe he raised enough $$ after about 10 years to do a Boondock sequel independently). Sort of fascinating really to watch someone deliberately sabotage his own career at something most people can only dream about doing.

Good gangster flicks? Godfather 1&2, Donnie Brasco, Usual Suspects, Friends of Eddie Coyle, (would "Some Like It Hot" count?) I had a soft spot for Chow Yung Fat in the '90s: Full Contact, A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, Hard Boiled.... got to rewatch some of those again.

Boondock saints is a classic. Good fun script and well cast with some fine actors.. Watched it so many times. Sequel failed to fire unfortunately.

I remember watching u turn many years ago and really liking that as well.

Haven't seen in bruges so can't add much there.

Downfall is also a brilliant flick.

That snatch wars was hilarious. Been sharing that with the mates and they are loving it.

Btw lefty I've tried watching the godfather movies but just b can't get into them either.. bore me to tears.

Exactly!!! I am the same way. I started the first Godfather movie and after 30 mins or so, I was so bored I just turned it off. I feel like I am supposed to like it because it is so highly rated and even imdb.com has it near the top of it's top 250. PDogg likes it, and since he is my best mate, I didn't want to hurt his feelings and diss Godfather. I guess I am coming out of the closet now as someone who is indifferent toward Godfather or it's sequels. Hope he will still give me a hug and a kiss next time we see each other. :character00292:

Sequels that improved or are on par.

Mad max 2

The dark knight

Aliens

Empire strikes back

Naked gun 2

Hangover 2

Little Asian transexuals 2

Been so long since I seen Mad Max I cannot recall. Seems like the sequel was The Road Warrior? I agree it was better. Just overall better cinematic quality if nothing else. The original Mad Max seemed like a low budget B movie.

Not into Aliens, or Star Wars so no comment on the sequels.

Naked Gun's sequels were pretty good. I think I still prefer the original though by a hair.

Hangover II I would agree, if no other reason than seeing Yasmin Lee on screen with her monster cock hanging between her legs. Every one of Zach Galafinakis's characters drive me up the wall. I guess that's his MO though, playing annoying doofuses that just get under your skin. Bored to Death, Due Date, and both Hangover movies. Man I just wanted to deck him. I guess that means he is just a good actor, though somewhat limited. I doubt he is as annoying in real.

Little Asian Transsexuals 2...hehehe, well all of those series sort of run together to me. I guess the quality does go up generally with each subsequent edition.

I like black lesbian movies and there is a series called Sista. Beginning with Sista 1, Sista 2, etc. Now up to Sista 25. And generally they got better with each new sequel. Sista 6 was my personal favorite.

Porn is a little different than mainstream though.

Wow. Just wow.

Ok, love Tarrantino, love almost everything he's done. Disliked Inglorious Basterds. Have it on BluRay as - even though I disliked it - it's still Tarrantino so it's worth owning and rewatching. I've not watched it since it's opening night in a theater in Vancouver BC at a midnight showing. I'll watch it again and get back to you. Hopefully, like great music, it's one that will grow on me and didn't reveal it's charms the first time.

Godfather & Godfather II - you gotta be pullin' my leg. You guys have great taste, you oughta love 'em. I think Godfather II is the better film overall, but love the pacing and setup in Godfather I. And watching the new Coppola BluRay restoration of all 3 films that completely cleans up the old prints is amazing, especially the special features. They talk about the photography of Gordon Willis, in particular how he achieved the look of that opening scene. Gave me a whole new appreciation for the film.

http://www.monstersa...rney_to_Blu-ray

BUT: don't watch Godfather 3. One of the worst pieces of cinematic shit that's ever been displayed on my monitor. Beyond abysmal.

Yes, Mad Max 2 was called "The Road Warrior" in North America, because Mad Max wasn't a hit here (unlike Europe and Australia). In America, the original was distributed by American International Pictures (AIP) - famous for the 60's drive-in flicks and Edgar Allan Poe films starring Vincent Price as well as the Beach Party films featuring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. They (AIP) feared that American audiences wouldn't understand the Aussie accents so they redubbed the entire film and dropped it onto unsuspecting drive-in's and hardtops in 1980 with little/no promotion. So when the 2nd film was distributed here by Warner Brothers they went all out with the marketing and thought a new name would be more attractive than marketing it as the sequel to a flop, and their strategy proved right. I've still got an enormous 40x60 promotional poster from it's original theatrical engagements in my collection, and it's worth upwards of $500 today.

By the way, I keep hearing rumors of a remake of Mad Max 2 but can't find anything to confirm it on the 'net.

Lastly - you have to be shitting me with "Hangover II". I thought they liked the first film so much they just made it a second time, but without the humor and surprises.
