SiamSam
Interesting list of airlines. Air Canada is # 27 and the first US carrier is Delta at # 45. Not terribly impressive results for the North American carriers.

Pdoggg
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given Thailand 65 days to address shortcomings found in its aviation safety standards, Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said yesterday. Thai-registered carriers will face a ban on launching flight services to the US if the flaws cannot be fixed within the deadline, he said. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/security/626424/thai-airlines-face-flying-ban-to-us
Pdoggg
Thai Airways International has agreed to reduce several international and regional flights to save costs and, at the same time, increase flights to Europe which have more potential to make profits. THAI president Mr Jarumporn Chotikasathien disclosed over the weekend that the flights on four routes namely Bangkok-Seoul-Los Angeles, Bangkok-Rome, Bangkok-Calcutta and Bangkok-Hyder Rabat would be reduced effectively as of October 25. Also, Bangkok-Luang Prabang and Bangkok-Chang Xa services will be suspended and the operations of these two routes will be taken over by Thai Smile low-cost airline. Mr Jarumporn said that THAI sustained about 300 million baht a year from operating each of the aforementioned routes because of the unattractive air fares and improper types of aircraft used. The services cutback, he added, will reduce passenger load by an average of 6 percent. Staff who are to be affected by the suspension of services will face layoffs or transferred to the head office or they can join the early-retirement programme, said Mr Jarumporn. He added that THAI might resume operating the suspended routes if its financial condition has improved in the next two years. Overall, Mr Jarumporn said he expected improved performance for the second half of the year with over 100 percent growth in the Chinese market and steady improvement of the passenger’s growth on the European routes. http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/thai-to-reduce-international-and-regional-flights-to-cut-costs
Pdoggg
Effective 28 July 2015, Lufthansa is introducing a new price concept for flights in Europe. The new Economy Class fare options “Light”, “Classic” and “Flex” shall apply from 1 October 2015, for domestic and European flights and will offer different services depending on the price. For example, within Economy Class, passengers can select services according to their individual wishes. The booked fare can be complemented with additional services by individually adding further options. I only flew Lufthansa once from the States to Germany with my German girlfriend. It was a good experience. If you are booking a Lufthansa flight by using the Lufthansa website, please use our links. I think post 9/11 it's more difficult to get membership in the Mile High Club. ================================================================ There was an incident on a Thai Airways plane from Switzerland to Bangkok Passengers on a flight from Zurich to Bangkok were forced to tie up a drunk Swiss man who caused a fracas during the journey. The incident occurred on the TG971 Thai Airways flight on Sunday, Swiss daily Blick reported on Wednesday. Passengers on the flight told the paper that at around 11.30pm the Swiss, seated at the rear of the aircraft, started to cause a fuss. Members of the cabin crew tried to calm him, but the man, who was obviously drunk, became aggressive and insulted staff and passengers. “Like a madman he climbed over the seats, regardless of whether passengers were sitting in them or not. Children and women screamed in horror,” one witness told Blick. Passengers forced him back to his seat, but the Swiss refused to stay there, so in a final, effective attempt to restrain him, they tied up his hands and feet. The drunkard remained in that state for the remaining six hours of the flight, until he was delivered to Thai police on landing in Bangkok. Three passengers were slightly injured in the incident, which was confirmed to Blick by Thai Airways spokesperson Boonroek Suppamitkitsana. http://www.thelocal.ch/20150729/drunk-swiss-tied-up-on-flight-to-bangkok
duke007
Thai Airways International Pcl (THAI.BK) plans to cut 1,401 jobs through voluntary retirement this year and suspend its loss-making flights to Los Angeles and Rome as it pushes ahead with a restructing plan Thailand's national carrier aims to reduce operating costs and capacity by 20 percent under the two-year plan, which also calls for aircraft sales and a reduction in staffing. The firm is one of several state-controlled companies that the military government has targeted for reform since seizing power in May 2014. The flight suspension will reduce Thai Air capacity by 5 percent, President Charumporn Jotikasthira told Reuters in a telephone interview. The company aims to cut capacity by 15 percent during the second of 2015. "It's normal that we have to cut costs and adjust flights to suit changing situation," he said adding the airline has set budget of 5.3 billion baht ($151.86 million) for the voluntary retirement scheme. The number leaving excludes those that will reach retirement age in 2015, he said. Thai Airways aims to cut operating costs by up to 9 billion baht this year, Charumporn said. From Oct. 25, the carrier will stop flying from Bangkok to Los Angeles and to Rome. The loss-making routes cost the company more than 100 million baht a year, he said The flight suspension to Los Angeles will close Thai Airways operations in the United States. The firm suspended flights to New York in 2008, also because the route was unprofitable. But Thailand's flagship carrier will double the number of flights from Bangkok to London and Bangkok to Frankfurt to twice daily, he said. To further reduce costs, Thai Airways will cut the frequency of its flights to Kolkata, India, he said. It will also transfer operations of three routes, Hyderabad in India, Changsha in China and Luang Prabang in Laos, to its Thai Smile mid-range unit, the president said. Charumporn reiterated his expectation that Thai Airways' operation will break even at the end of this year, although the bottom line would be impacted by rising restructuring costs. Thai Airways still has 50 routes that are either loss-making or have low returns, the company said in a statement

Pdoggg
At least the bog is still free. Beginning early December inbound and outbound passengers at the country's six international airports have to pay 35 baht each for background screening check charge after the Airports of Thailand (AoT) introduced the new system to check passengers. The system called the Advance Passenger Processing System (APPS) will boost airport security by screening each passenger more closely than the current system in use. According to Bangkok Post, It allows customs officials, airport and airline staff and immigration police to obtain the profiles of passengers from their countries of origin. They will be able to check if passengers are blacklisted or banned from leaving a country. Authorities will share passenger information and ordinary passengers whose profiles are clean can pass immigration checks faster. AoT says it will take about three months to introduce the system and another month for testing before putting it in use in December. The APPS will be put in use in six international airports namely Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Mae Fa Luang in Chiang Rai, and Hat Yai. The APPS fee will apply to international passengers arriving and departing from the airports, as well as transfer and transit passengers, he said. Airlines will be responsible for collecting the 35 baht additional charge, which will be incorporated into the air ticket price, AoT chairman Nitinai Sirismatthakarn said. However, the Airline Operations Committee (AOC) has complained that airlines aren’t ready for the change as they have already sold a number of advance international flight tickets. It has urged the AoT to consider postponing the plan for three months from December to allow sufficient time for the airlines to prepare. http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/airport-authorities-to-introduce-background-screening-check-at-six-airports-with-35-baht-extra-charge-per-head
Pdoggg
Perhaps targeting Air Asia. CEO Tony Fernandez is The Donald of Southeast Asia. He's the guy who says "You're Fired" on the Asia version of The Apprentice. All budget airlines must declare the total number of their seats and tell customers how many seats are left while they are booking for seats in the airlines' promotion campaigns. This requirement was disclosed by the permanent secretary for Transport Mrs Soithip Trisuddhi after chairing a meeting with low cost airlines to fix the airfares. She said that from October last year to June this year, the ministry received 50 complaints from customers, breaking down to refund for flight delays, lost property, and exaggeration of advertisements particularly in promotion campaign which the ministry is monitoring closely to take action with them. She said presently airfare of low cost airline was capped at 13 baht per kilometre but the airlines could dump airfare in their competition because it would benefit customers. But she noted that some budget airlines had dumped airfares to cut throat prices which discourage other operators to compete. This prompted the ministry to monitor their promotion campaign closely as the ministry received numerous complaints from customers booking for seats in the airlines’ promotion campaign that they could hardly get the seats with replies that no more seats were left. She said further that she has now ordered the Civil Aviation Department to reach understanding with all low cost airlines that they must launch promotion campaign at the same standard which mean they must disclose the number of seats in their promotion campaign and how many seats left unsold when customers phoned in to book, as some were exaggerated. http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/low-cost-airlines-told-to-declare-available-seats-in-promotion-campaigns

Although some of that is involved, there are also considerations of easy to enter with no visa required (stamp on enry) or easy to obtain visas, and strangely enough if is is a family holiday, which is often the case, the ladies like to shop in Thailand. Pdoggg
A Nok Air flight bound for Nakhon Si Thammarat from Bangkok’s Don Meuang airport made an emergency landing in Surat Thani after the plane struck a bird while on airborne. Nok Air’s flight DD7805 left Don Meuang airport at about 7.40 am for Nakhon Si Thammarat with about 200 passengers and crew members on board. But after about 20 minutes in flight, the captain informed the passengers that the plane had developed technical problem and had to land at the Surat Thani airport. The plane landed safely and all passengers and crews were told to disembark and to wait at the passengers’ reception room while technicians checked the plane to identify the cause of the problem. It was reported that a big bird got stuck in one of the plane’s engines causing the problem which led the caption to make the emergency landing in Surat Thani. Until press time at 11 am, the plane was still being fixed and passengers were still waiting for the flight to resume. http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/nok-air-flight-makes-emergency-landing-in-surat-thani-after-plane-hit-a-bird
ArchieBunker
Yes bird strikes and bird engine ingestion can be a very big problem indeed. Its a sign of the times that airport official/airlines are worried about drone strikes/engine ingestions. In the USA there are so many fuckwits flying these things that its not a matter of if but when this happens. A drone ingested into an engine can cause a major issue.....
