You should always wear your seatbelt while flying even when the fasten seatbelt sign is off.

Even new airplanes cannot detect turbulence ahead of time and this is a reminder of what can happen - even to the biggest passenger jet in the sky, an A380.

Thai Airways International assured no shutdown of its headquarters Monday and business will run as usual.

Assurance of no shutdown was given by its acting president Chokchai Panyayong amid earlier threat by THAI union of shutdown of THAI headquarter on Vibhavadi road Monday.

Mr Chokchai said all employees of THAI will work,  notably all technicians vow to operate as usual and no shut down of offices.

But union president Damrong Waiyakanee said employees will rally at THAI headquarters on Monday to protest the management and also will demand the resignation of Mr Chokchai and THAI board chairman Amphon Kittiamphon on accusation they lack good governance and work at THAI just for their own benefits.

He  could not say if the Monday rally would have impact on THAI operations and passenger service.

A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 has reportedly crashed into the sea off Vietnam with 239 people on board.

State media there says the aircraft came down near Vietnam’s Tho Chu Island. Malaysian authorities

have not yet confirmed the crash and say no wreckage has been found. A search is underway.

Contact was lost two hours into the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing where relatives faced an agonising wait after Flight 370 was shown to be delayed on the arrivals board.

Most of those travelling on the flight were Chinese and Malaysian but passengers were of 14 nationalities, among them Australians, Americans and French citizens.

If the crash is confirmed, it would mark the second fatal accident involving a Boeing 777 in less than a year.

Oil Slick Sighting Is First Sign Malaysian Plane May Have Crashed

A 12-mile long oil slick spotted between Malaysia and Vietnam Saturday afternoon is thought to be the first sign that a missing Malaysia Airlines flight with 239 people aboard went down in the waters between southernmost Vietnam and northern Malaysia, according to Vietnam’s director of civil aviation. “An AN26 aircraft of the Vietnam Navy has discovered an oil slick about 20 kilometers in the search area, which is suspected of being a crashed Boeing aircraft — we have announced that information to Singapore and Malaysia and we continue the search,” Lai Xuan Thanh, the director of the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, said in reporting the sighting of the slick. He said he did not know whether the slick was closer to the Malaysian or Vietnam side of the entrance to the Gulf of Thailand. The last coordinates automatically transmitted by the aircraft were from near the midpoint between the two countries, when the plane appeared to be in stable flight at 35,000 feet. The search and rescue services have spotted 2 oil slicks around the last known location of the airliner. Some speculation has arisen now that two passengers using stolen passports were determined to be on board.

Things look grim that the plane was lost, and it was some sort of catastrophic incident - likely no survivors.

A guy next to me in immigration today mentioned that he had heard they are now charging a departure tax in the airport again, like it was a few years ago before it was incorporated into the ticket.  Can any of you guys who have left the kingdom recently confirm this is true or not.  It just sounded like a rumour to me but it would be handy to know.
