from pattaya i'll fly Phuket...better from Pattaya Airport or Bangkok? Air Asia has direct flight from u-tapao.....i didn't even know pattaya had an airport.

The airport named U-Tapao (ohh-ta-POW) is closer to Pattaya than Swampy but is still a bit of a drive. Likely easier than going to Swampy though. It was a US airbase during the Vietnam war and now is a joint Thai military air base and commercial airport. Bangkok Air has been flying the route for many years. But BKK Air generally flies prop planes on the route (limited overhead space, baggage weight limits and small seats) so the AirAsia A320 jet is a big improvement.

Evidently, just before going bust the execs had their snouts in the trough and took "bonuses".  For what, running the airline out of business??  FFS!!!  That scenario sounds PAINFULLY familiar!!

Not just bonuses Mr.Bunker = bonuses to the tune of 20 million sterling, ffs. The CEO alone helped himself to 7.5 million, while the company was hemorrhaging money. Now the taxpayer has to foot the bill to repatriate everybody who is stranded, with operation matterhorn!!!

Wing Commander Suthirawat Suwanawat, general manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Airports of Thailand (AOT), said on Friday (October 25) that Suvarnabhumi Airport will close the eastern runway (runway 01R-16L) and rapid exit taxiway at night from 1.30 to 8.30 am to repair and improve the surface.

“The project will start on November 8 and is expected to be completed in 5 months, reopening on April 6 next year,” he said. “The total length of runway to be repaired is 1,100 meters, while the surface of taxiway nos. B3, B5, B7, B8, B10 and B11 will be replaced with asphalt to increase the strength to handle increased usage in the future.”

Suthirawat further explained that the construction was scheduled at night time to avoid causing problems for passengers. “The west runway will still open during those hours, and both runways will be functional from 8.30 am everyday.”

“During the periods of new year (December 25, 2019 – January 6, 2020) and Chinese new year (January 18-31, 2020), the repair on eastern runway will be temporarily suspended since the airport will be very busy,” he added. “AOT will also provide additional staff to facilitate passenger check-ins at every gate.”

The second phase will start November 8 as mentioned above, while the last phase will begin around October 2021 and covering the remaining distance on both runways.

A foreigner opened the emergency exit of an airplane that was flying from Chiang Mai to Bangkok on 6 November 2019. The Thai Smile Airline reported about the incident on 7 November 2019 after the flight was delayed for hours from the original departure plan. Security officers had to drag him off the airplane and perform security checks while all the passengers had to wait, just from the man’s reckless actions.

The Airline reported that the flight was WE169 belonged to Thai Smile Airlines flying from Chiang Mai International Airport to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. The original departure time was at 15.40, but then the incident happened. After all the passengers boarded the plane the doors were closed and the plane was in preparation for take-off. Suddenly a foreigner passenger ran out of his seat and opened the emergency exit located on the left of the place.

The emergency exit sprung open and the escape slide fell open. The captain stopped the plane right away before notifying the airport officials including security officers of what just happened on board. The foreigner was removed from the plane as a safety precaution so that the incident won’t repeat itself.

Qantas is choosing Airbus over Boeing as a partner to fly the world's longest passenger routes. It's yet another blow to the embattled American aircraft maker, which continues to weather fallout from the 737 Max crisis.

The Australian carrier announced Friday that it would use Airbus planes for "Project Sunrise," which intends to eventually operate regular non-stop flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to London and New York.

The 19-hour journeys would be the longest passenger flights ever run by a commercial airline. They are still in the research phase.
Qantas (QABSY) said in its statement Friday that it had not yet placed an order for Airbus planes. But it added that it would work with Airbus to draft a deal for up to 12 planes that will be presented to the airline's board.

Both aircraft makers had pitched their jets to Qantas in a competitive months-long process, with Boeing (BA) offering up the 777X and Airbus (EADSF) the A350.
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce called the decision "a tough choice" that was "made even harder by innovation from both manufacturers to improve on what they had already spent years designing."

Airbus would add an extra fuel tank to the A350, which was selected for the project, and "slightly increase the maximum takeoff weight to deliver the performance required" on the new routes, Qantas said.

"From the outset, we've been clear that Project Sunrise depends on a business case that works. We'll only commit to this investment if we know it will generate the right return for our shareholders given the inherent commercial risks," Joyce said in his statement.

In addition to tailoring its aircraft, Airbus gave Qantas more time to decide whether it would confirm an order for the jets, the airline said.
Qantas said this played a role in its decision, particularly as it's still negotiating how it would compensate its cabin crew for the flights, which could entail working for up to 22 hours straight. So far, the company says it has offered pilots a host of suggestions, including a 3% annual raise.

Boeing has had a terrible year, mostly because of its grounded 737 Max jet. The planes stopped flying in March after the second of two fatal crashes, and they won't be approved to fly again before the end of the year, according to US regulators.

While Boeing's stock has recorded gains this year, it's still down 22% from a high in March before a Max plane crashed in Ethiopia.
So far, Qantas has conducted two out of its three planned test flights. The final experiment is slated for next week, with a decision on whether to proceed expected in March, the carrier said.

If you are thinking of travelling to South Africa from London don't do it with EgyptAir via Cairo, they are crap apparently and there is no Booze :rolleye0012:

The price he said he paid was just slightly more than $1000 USD which seems like a good deal for biz class if that includes both legs of the journey and assuming he didn't get some sort of free upgrade.  But I suppose Egypt Air biz class is somewhere between Premium Economy and true Business Class.

He says that parents are inconsiderate if they fly in biz class with their kids.  Guess he feels I should be stuck with them in steerage!

Actually, I don't quite understand why someone close to 2 years old should fly for free.  Maybe better to fly an adult only party plane such as Venga Airways.

A Boeing 737 passenger jet operated by a Ukrainian airline crashed minutes after take-off from Tehran on Wednesday morning, killing all on board.

There were 167 passengers and nine crew members on board the Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, Ukrainian Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk said in a statement. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said that there were no survivors.

The Boeing 737-800 was bound for Kyiv from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport shortly after 6 a.m. local time. Press photos showed emergency workers combing through wreckage outside of Tehran.

Not because of that crash, but a number of airlines have announced they will be re-routing flights to avoid Iranian airspace. They include Eva Air, Malaysian Airlines, Lufthansa and Air France, others will likely do so too.

I'm flying with Eva next week. I'll have to see if I can find out if that means my arrival time in bkk will change as I have booked taxi.
