ATM fees

Just stuck my Bangkok bank debit card into a Kasikorn ATM and.................. no B20 fee! Is this nationwide these days as there always used to be a B20 charge, or is it just K-bank? It was only for B900 so perhaps the amount is relevant.

Updated: Also add TTB bank

With some banks you get a limited number of free withdrawals a month from other ATMs.  Also some banks have a choice of debit card annual fees with the higher fee cards giving you more withdrawals from other bank ATMs or out of province ATMs.  I don't really know because I hardly ever use another bank's ATM. So I chose the cheapest annual fee.

I will try other banks and report back. Prefer to use my own bank's ATM but sometimes they're empty or out of order, especially in soi Buakhao.

Laawman, I would like to ask the more macro question regarding get money in TH or PH.  What's the best way to set up in your home country, and then to make the transfers as needed.  Included in the question (which your thread hits on) minimum to no fees.

Your card issuer may not charge you a fee, however the owner of the ATM will.

I'd say to get around this, would be to open an account in Thailand with an ATM card and withdraw the funds that way.

But I suspect you would incur currency transfer fees, depositing funds into the Thai account or a not so good exchange rate.

Cash

Bring new 100 dollar bills if American.

The best cash rate is Thailand is is at the head office of Super Rich Thailand (Green).

https://www.superrichthailand.com/#!/en/exchange#converter-section

Best on Lower Sukhumvit:

http://www.vasuexchange.com/

Two of the better ones in Pattaya:

http://www.daminiexchange.com/

https://ttexchange.com/

Watch out for similarly named, same yellow colored TT imitations offering crappy rates.

In Angeles City the best rate for 100's is usually Normas.  If you have 20's though you might get a better rate at Natalia.

For all of the above I suspect but am not sure that the recommended places would be the best for exchanging all major currencies.  There are some specialty shops that cater to Middle Easterners.

Do not bring Danish Kroner. Best to exchange Kroner for Euros in Denmark.

Likewise if going from Thailand to the Philippines, it is best to exchange baht for USD in Thailand and then change USD for Philippine pisos in the Philippines.

Transfers:

If transfering money, Wise is probably the best if you already have a Thai bank account.

Once in Pattaya, if you have difficulty opening a Thai bank account, Mot can help you for a fee.

https://www.mots-services.com/mots-services1

If using Thai ATMs the Fidelity debit card linked to a cash management account and some Schwab cards will rebate the 220 baht ATM fee.

Philippine ATMs usually have quite low withdrawal limits.

If going to Cambodia the ATMs spit out USD.

I think Wise is probably the best idea, especially as they can issue you with a debit card if needed.

It's also possible to do it using a crypto account, but would involve having to open accounts in both your home country and in Thailand e.g bitkub. No transfer fees, but there is a conversion fee.

For the above methods though, you will still need to open a Thai bank account as already mentioned.

 at the airport

The best rates at the airport are in the basement technically not airport property but down a ramp near the entrance to the Airport Rail Link. The rates there are significantly better than in the airport proper.  Here is a website that describes this particular area but some of the specific money changers in that small area are now closed.

Jomtien

TT Exchange probably has the best rates in Jomtien.  Their main Jomtien branch is on the baht bus route just before the baht bus turns onto Jomtien Beach Road.  There are many imitations with similar names and a similar yellow color offering poor rates.

In Pattaya, Damini usually has a good rate.

In that area I alway used Superrich Green, but I see it is closed.

God knows how I am going to manage getting around the airport on my next trip. I will have more stuff to carry than on a gypsy caravan. Might put it in storage for 9 days. Will check out the rates.

Only a short stay this time unfortunately. But enought to get into trouble!. I am off the leash now so watch out. If in early May you see some news about an old falang found dead in a room,it might be me!.

Super Rich Green's rates at the Airport Rail Link at Suvarnabhumi were almost as good as at their main branch near Central World.

At the main headquarters branch near Central World in Bangkok the difference between their USD Buy and Sell rate is sometimes as low as 3 satang.  The place is quite busy, more like a namk, with people exchanging large amounts of cash.

A tip for Americans or people going to Cambodia is to trade baht for USD in 1 dollar denomination.  If you exchange an infinite amount of US 100 dollar bills for baht and then trade that baht for USD 1 dollar bills you would be the richest man in the world but it would be difficult to carry.

Last time I inquired, many moons ago, the rate was 100 baht per day per bag at Suvarnabhumi.

My bags are huge. Haha. I mean what I am carrying. One is 2.0m long and the other 1.4m long. Will check it out.

Some hotels will let you leave your bags free of charge until your next visit (if not too long a period of time - which varies on the hotel). I have done this at my usual hotel - Grand Business Inn on Sukhumvit Soi 11 a number of times leaving my bags up to 2 weeks.
